How to prevent inclusion of intercept in lme with interaction
Dear friends of lme,
After so many year with lme, I feel ashamed that I cannot get this to work.
Maybe it's a syntax problem, but possibly a lack of understanding.
We have growth curves of new dental bone that can well be modeled by a
linear growth curve, for two different treatments and several subjects as
random parameter. By definition, newbone is zero at t=0, so I tried to force

legend position
Hi all.
I'm ploting a raster and I can't find the proper way to move the legend. For example,
r = raster(system.file("external/test.grd", package="raster"))plot(r)
How can I put the legend at the desired position?
Thank in advance,Phil

latitude longitude data
Dear R-helpers,
I get GPS readings with bug counts (bugs meaning
insects in this case) made along rows in crop fields
and use these to make maps of bug distribution. The
GPS readings are not quite accurate enough for my
purpose, so since I know what row each reading is made
in, I adjust the latitudinal coordinate using:
grd<-lm(lat~lon+Row,data)

Read many cvs files
Hello R helpers,
I would like to automate this code for many files of the same type. But I
don´t know how to make it. In particular, i don´t know how to read many
files each one as an r object with the name of the file. Then a for loop
would be sufficient, right?
Many thanks and a happy new year.

"infinite recursion" in do.call when lme4 loaded only
A larg program which worked with lme4/R about a year ago failed when I
re-run it today. I reproduced the problem with the program below.
-- When lme4 is not loaded, the program runs ok and fast enough
-- When lme4 is loaded (but never used), the do.call fails
with infinite recursion after 60 seconds. Memory used increases
beyond bonds in task manager.
-- I tested a few S3 based packages

We are just about to have a T1 line installed in our office in Dallas

questions. I have put the question area at the bottom of the email, we

raster plot is empty
Dear R-help,
I have a problem plotting maps using the raster package when I use R
on my workplace server, but not when I use my own desktop. I suspect
the server version must be missing something and was wondering if
anyone would have any ideas.
The problem occurs after
library(raster)
f <- system.file("external/test.grd", package="raster")
r <- raster(f)
plot(f)

memory and swap space in ncdf
I've a linux system with 2Gb of memory which is not
enough for reading a 446Mb netcdf file using ncdf:
library(ncdf)
ncold <- open.ncdf("gridone.grd")
Error: cannot allocate vector of size 1822753 Kb
When I look at the free memory in my system I can see
that none of the Swap space is being used by R.
I am a newbie in linux and R, I've read the Memory

help with execution of 'embarrassingly parallel' problem using foreach, doParallel on a windows system
Dear R helpers,
I have what another member on this forum described as
an embarrassingly parallel problem. I am trying to fit models on subsets of
some data based on unique combinations of two id factors in the dataset.
Total number of combinations is 30^5, and this takes a long time. So, I
would like fit models for each of the datasets produced by subsetting on
the unique combinations, splitting

Get contour of a map
Hello everybody,
I search a function which returns the contour of map with levels like contourLines, but I would like this function return the border of the map too, because the function contourLines cannot consider the corner of the map and it is not adapted to fill polygon after that.
Thanks in advance

suggestion/request: install.packages and unnecessary file modifications
Dear R-devel
When 'install.packages' runs, it updates all html files in all packages. Mostly, there seems to be no actual change to the html file contents, but the date/time does change. This has causing been me a bit of trouble, because I keep synchronized versions of R on several different machines, and whenever I install a package, many MB of file transfers are required; my slow upload

matrix of chi-square results for all combinations of data frame
Hi everybody
I have a questionnaire with a lot of questions that allow for more than one
option to be chosen (like a tickbox in a html form). The data captured on a
mobile device and is supplied in a format where every option is a separate
variable (logical). I want to develop a generic function to process these
questions. As part of the analysis I want make a matrix of the p-value from

random sample from list
random selection of cells in raster based on distance from xy locations
Hi,
I am trying to sample a raster for random cells that occur within a
specific distance of point locations. I have successfully found multiple
ways of doing this but have memory issues with very large datasets. To
overcome this problem I am working with lists. I am now stuck on how to
randomlly sample the correct elements

R enquire
Dear Madam or Mister,
My name is Manuel Montesino and I am a PhD student at the University of Copenhagen. I am not a programmer myself, but my thesis requires the combined use of R and a model. I would be very grateful if you help me with the following issue;
I am trying to combine a small piece of code written in Fortran 77 with R. The F77 code aims to select data from a library and write it
