resolution of windows metafiles
I am having trouble getting smooth-appearing curves in figures produced as
windows metafiles using R (R-1.1.1 on Windows 98). When I import them into
a word processor (either MS Word 97, or WordPerfect 9.0), the figures
appear only slightly bumpy on screen, but when printed, there is a clear
jaggedness reminiscent of aliasing. Is there a fix for this (if the answer
is "upgrade to 1.2",

help with bivariate density plot question
Dear R users:
I have a dataset with two variables (>20000 observations, two samples from same subject) and I used "kernSur" from library(Genkern) to
get a estimated bivariate density and corresponding plots as follows:
new.data.normal<-data.normal[!is.na(data.normal[,2]),]
x<-new.data.normal[,2]
y<-new.data.normal[,3]
op <- KernSur(x,y, xgridsize=50, ygridsize=50,

R crashes when loading rgl package before minqa package
Hej,
Calling newuoa (from the minqa package) makes R crash when the package rgl
is loaded first. This however only on certain selected data.
The data used for testing (saved to 'bugs.R'):

3d plots?
Hi all
I'm trying to create a three-dimensional wireframe-type plot,
much like the screenshot shown at
http://www.r-project.org/screenshots/volcano-persp.jpg
In my case, I'm trying to show a density estimate of
two-variable system, using the GenKern package. I've
used the image() and contour() to create a nice shaded plot,
but I've found a 3d plot is often easier for the

boxplot of different colors
Hello,
I am making a boxplot of 13 boxes.
I tried to color the box using 13 colors but failed.
Only red and brown were displayed.
Green, blue, and grey disappeared.
Please kindly advise modification after checking the code below.
Thank you in advance.

R Newbie Question
Hello list,
I just started R today and tried something quite simple. I wanted to
create a colored plot and eventually after hours of fiddling around got
it working. However, my solution seems very suboptimal and I'd really
appreciate your hints on how to improve. I believe that R already offers
many functions I coded (e.g. distance between two vectors, vector
length, vector normalization and

ncdf4: Why are NAs converted to _FillValue when saving?
Dear all
I'm a newbie regarding netcdf data. Today I realized that I maybe do not understand some basics of the netcdf. I want to create a *.nc file containing three variables for Switzerland. All data outside of the country are NAs. The third variable is calculated from the first two variables. Basically there is no problem to do that. I copy the file with the data of the first variable,

slope coefficient of a quadratic regression bootstrap
Hello,
I want to know if two quadratic regressions are significantly different.
I was advised to make the test using
step 1 bootstrapping both quadratic regressions and get their slope
coefficients.
(Let's call the slope coefficient *â*^1 and *â*^2)
step 2 use the slope difference *â*^1-*â*^2 and bootstrap the slope
coefficent

changing outlier shapes of boxplots using lattice
Hello
This is Elaine.
I am using package lattice to generate boxplots.
Using Richard's code, the display was almost perfect except the outlier
shape.
Based on the following code, the outliers are vertical lines.
However, I want the outliers to be empty circles.
Please kindly help how to modify the code to change the outlier shapes.
Thank you.

interp() function output not continue
Dear List,
I'm using interp() to prepare 3d data for plotting with the contour() function.
If have x,y and z data. All are arrays. X and Y are sampled in an orderly fashion on a grid (a circular sub-area of a grid - see plot). I'm trying to use interp() to get x and y arrays and a z matrix that can be fed to contour().
This is the command:

I keep getting the 'memory.size' error message when I run a program I have

believe the error comes in the code fragement below where I have multiple
arrays that could be taking up space. Does anyone know a good way around
this?

not a problem: a submission (PR#8714)
Full_Name: TOBY MARTHEWS
Version: 2.1.1
OS: Windows XP
Submission from: (NULL) (139.133.7.38)
I think you should have better examples on the ?plot man page, if you don't mind
me saying. Can I suggest something like this, which would probably stop so many
emails to the R help about how to put on error bars
Cheers,

NFSv4: Using fsid=0 but *not* exporting the root filesystem
Hi,
I would like to use the NFSv4 ability to create a "root" filesystem with
fsid=0, so that I don't have to refer to the whole path of the exported
filesystem when I mount it. However I do *not* want this root
filesystem to be mountable by any host. Is that possible and how?
E.g
Filesystem:
/exports/data1
/exports/data2
/exports/data3

Question about simulation design...
Help R list servers,
I have 500 external data sets for a simulation study that I would like
to bring into R to analyze. They have the names data1.dat, data2.dat,
..., dataN.dat
Is there a way to automatize the bringing in of these data sets in R
using the read.table function within a looping cycle?
For example...
for (j in 1:N){
data_"j" = read.table("data"j".dat,
