RNetCDF: retrieving variable names and units
Dear List,
does anybody has experience with the RNetCDF package? I manage to open a connection and copy data from a ncdf file but would need a way to automatically retrieve variable names (ideally all of them from one file) and units from the file.
Any ideas?

catching errors in RNetCDF
Dear R community,
I quite frequently run into errors while using the RNetCDF package which
do not seem to be recognised as normal R errors and, hence, do not stop
the execution of the code making it hard to debug the code.
Consider, for example:
library(RNetCDF)
con <- create.nc('test.nc')
test <- try(var.get.nc(con, 'dummy'))
In this case, some sort of error message

Hello all,
I set 'UDUNITS_PATH' and 'NETCDF_PATH' successfully to my custom places and
then

and got this:

Receive "unable to load shared object RNetCDF.o" during R INSTALL of RNetCDF
On a Red Hat Linux cluster I am seeing the following after multiple
other packages were successfully installed. The error seems to suggest
that RNetCDF.o was not copied to the appropriate lib folder. The admin
user performing the install has the required privileges to perform the
install. Words of wisdom are greatly appreciated:

Error: "non-numeric argument to binary operator"
Hi
I am posting in the topic related to the "non-numeric argument to binary

attached the file with this post. It is a climate data from NOAA site. The code
follows as:

General indexing in multidimensional arrays
Dear R community,
I have a general question regarding indexing in multidiemensional arrays.
Imagine I have a three dimensional array and I only want to extract on
vector along a single dimension from it:
data <- array(rnorm(64),dim=c(4,4,4))
result <- data[1,1,]
If I want to extract more than one of these vectors, it would now really
help me to supply a logical matrix of the

ncdf with opendap/dods support
Aloha,
I just made some quick hacks on the configure script with the 'ncdf'
package to make it link with the opendap/dods libraries (opendap.org)
rather than the netcdf api library. Basically, this allows a user to
interact in R with a remotely served dataset as if it were a netcdf file
on the local filesystem (read-only). Functionality with local files
should continue to work as

Problems saving ff objects
Dear list,
I am trying to understand and use the ff package. As I had some problems saving some ff objects, and as I did not fully manage to understand the whole concept of *.ff, *.ffData and *.RData with the help of the documentation, I tried to reproduce the examples from the help of ffsave.
When I ran, however : (copied from the help)

Exporting objects plotted with plot3d() - rgl package
Dear all,
Can anybody tell me how to export a 3d figure made with the plot3d
function? I'm careless about whether it's still interactive or not in
another format, as long I can get it out of R.
Thanks!

test whether all elements of a vector are identical
Dear list,
this might be an easy one, but I could figure out a solution (or how to
google the right term).
Is there any way to test whether all elements of a vector are identical?
For numeric vectors I would use
sum(diff(vector)==0)==0
but I have character vectors. Any Ideas?
Cheers

controlling where *.Rout gets printed. Possible?
OK, my journey to make lab machines automagically install & update all
desirable R packages is nearing an end! The only question I have now is
this: How can I control where the system prints the *.Rout file that is
created automatically when the R batch program runs. In "man R" I don't
find any information about it. When the cron job runs "R_installAll.sh"

problem loading ncdf library on MAC
Hi there,
I'm more or less new to R and have just installed R on my MAC laptop. I
managed to install everything easily enough (R version 2.9) and a few
packages, but when I try to load the ncdf package (in R) I get the
following error:

R+netcdf, resultados de WRF
Saludos estimados usuarios !

help with regexp
Dear list memebers,
I am stuck with using regular expressions.
Imagine I have a vector of character strings like:
test <- c('filename_1_def.pdf', 'filename_2_abc.pdf')
How could I use regexpressions to extract only the 'def'/'abc' parts of these strings?
Some try from my side yielded no results:

checkUsage from codetools shows errors when function uses functions from loaded packages
Dear list members,
I frequently program small scripts and wrap them into functions to be
able to check them with checkUsage. In case these functions (loaded via
source or copy pasted to the R console) use functions from other
packages, I get this error:
no visible global function definition for ?xxxxxxx?
For example:
test = function() {
require(plotrix)
color.legend()

time zones and the chron to POSIXct conversion
Hey R folks,
i found some strange (to me) behaviour with chron to POSIXct conversion.
The two lines of code result in two different results, on ewith the
correct time zone, one without:
library(chron)
as.POSIXct(chron('12/12/2000'), tz = 'UTC')
as.POSIXlt(chron('12/12/2000'), tz = 'UTC')
Only the code below would give me a POSIXct object with the correct time
