A complicated 'aggregate'
Hi,
I have a financial (zoo) time series with prices and volumes (although I can
get the coredata as a matrix). Due to the data-source some indices have
multiple observations. I want to aggregate these according to a weighted
average.

Changing selected elements of an array
Hi!
I have a matrix defined on geographical positions (through) row and column
names. I need to change a number of elements in this matrix using the
information of a data.frame containing geographical positions and a number of
variables.
Changing the value of one specific element is easy, but changing on a number
of selected positions seems more difficult. When I use the geographical

error message obtained when plotting survival curves (error not previously obtained)
Hello,
I now receive an error message when obtaining a survival plot, which
was not previously received with the same code. I recently updated
all my packages. It does not seem to be a peculiarity of my data as I
receive the error using data available in R. A plot is produced but I
am uncertain regarding the error message.

Iteration through a list in R
Hello :)
I'm just starting out with R and would appreciate your help with a couple
of problems I am running into.
I have used Sys.glob to get a list of all filenames having a particular
file extension (in my case, *.txt)
I would now like to use this list in the following manner: I would like to
use each filename from the list and open that file into a tab separated
matrix and proceed.
How can

ask for help on nonlinear fitting
I have a table like the following. I want to fit Cm to Vm like this:
Cm ~ Cl+Q1*b1*38.67*exp(-b1*(Vm-Vp1)*0.03867)/(1+exp(-b1*(Vm-Vp1)*0.03867))^2+Q2*b2*38.67*exp(-b2*(Vm-Vp2)*0.03867)/(1+exp(-b2*(Vm-Vp2)*0.03867))^2
I use nls, with start=list(Q1=2e-3, b1=1, Vp1=-25, Q2=3e-3, b2=1,
Vp2=200). But I always get 'singlular gradient' error like this. But
in SigmaPlot I can get the result. How

nls convergence problem
I'm having problems getting nls to agree that convergence has occurred in a
toy problem.
nls.out never gets defined when there is an error in nls. Reaching the
maximum number of iterations is alway an error, so nls.out never gets
defined when the maximum number of iterations is reched.

Trying to write Merge for more data.frames - Error in match.names(clabs, names(xi))
Dear list members,
I would like to merge multiple dataframes and seems that this task is going
to be required quite often, so I decided to write a simple (pseudo)recursive
merge.
I started with the case when dataframes are merged by rows (0). But there is
a problem when a dataframe to be merged in the step n has some items that
are not in previous ones. Then I get "Error in match.names(clabs,

Help with nonlinear regressional
Dear All,
I am doing experiments in live plant tissue using a laser confocal
microscope. The method is called "fluorescence recovery after
photo-bleaching" (FRAP) and here follows a short summary:
1. Record/ measure fluorescence intensity in a defined, round region of
interest (ROI, in this case a small spot) to determine the initial intensity
value before the bleaching. This

difficulties with MuMIn model generation with coxph
Hi All,
I'm having trouble with the automatized model generation (dredge) function
in the MuMIn package. I'm trying to use it to automatically generate subsets
of models from a global cox proportional hazards model, and rank them based
on AICc. These seems like it's possible, and the Mumin documentation says
that coxph is supported. However, when I run the code (see below), it gives

DHCP & Samba - Server can't see clients
Hi there,
I just playing around at the moment with the idea of putting in a DHCP server
alongside my Samba stuff. On my test server I'm having problems seeing the
client machines (test 4 or 5) in the DIAGNOSIS readme.
The server can see the clients as the general name search works and returns
the IP of the clients.
I think it's something to do with the DNS and WINS not wanting to

Asterisk + NEC Electra Elite IPK Integration
Hi,
I'm am currently in the process of trying to integrate an * box with an
NEC Electra Elite IPK.
Currently, we have 7 POTS lines coming into our building. These lines
are plugged into our NEC using the appropriate analog line interface
card from NEC. The NEC effectively has NO configuration done to it,
other than to make all the internal phones ring when a call comes in.

Limit rsync running time
Hi
I'd like to rsync a large amount of data over a slow connection,
but only during night hours. I couldn't find a parameter that limits
the time that rsync is running, only the timeout on idle time.
I guess the way to go would be to start rsync, get the process
ID and kill the process later on.
Has anybody already written a bash script that would do something
like that? Are there other

Small linux print server
This is a bit off topic, however it's related to a samba based network...
I've got a small network (10 users) running samba on a Linux box with a HP
network printer. This is working so well, that the only network problems
that I have are with printers other printers "shared" by Win 95. Therefore:
I was planning to turn an old 486 with an 80M HDD into a print server,

I'm giving a talk in a few days to a group of psychology faculty and

concrete examples of things that are fairly straightforward to do in R
but that are difficult or impossible to do in SAS or SPSS. However, it
