Rails speed?
Hi -- (First time posting to the list...) I''m trying out Rails on my Mac (OS X Panther, 1.6 G5). It seems... kinda slow? I''ve even run it with FastCGI and the response time is still painfully slow. Is this just me? Is mod_ruby any better than FastCGI? Or is it rails? Thanks in advance! -- joshua

Agile Legacy Interop
I just wanted to announce my latest plugin: LegacyInterop The 5 second video, minus the video, looks like this: $ ./script/plugin install svn://lirp.rubyforge.org/var/svn/lirp/trunk/legacy_interop $ echo LegacyInterop.act_as_dotnet >> config/environment.rb Done! Agile! Pragmatic! The plugin includes support for a large number of legacy systems, all using the "act_as" pattern.

Using gettext to localize your rails app
Hi, I am having some trouble finding out how best to use ruby-gettext in my app. I do this in my ApplicationController: before_filter :localize private def localize # we will always use UTF-8 @charset = ''utf-8'' @headers["Content-Type"] = "text/html; charset=@charset" # simplified approach: extract the first language from the request # or use

Needed - a step by step WAMP installation of Rails
I am finding the installation process for Rails a bit confusing. First of all I want to use: Windows 2000 Apache 1.3+ MySQL The above is accomplished with WAMP5 from wampserver.com The problem is that there is no complete step-by-step for installation in this enviroment. The wiki instructions hop around from One-click to Apache.conf and other items. Installing CGI support for languages on

some notes about rails, apache, fastcgi and windows
hello. i''d like to share some feelings of mine after a couple of *weeks* intermittent attempts to have rails applications working on windows (XP) with fastcgi performances under apache (2.0). i''d say the software stack i''m using now will be fairly common as more and more new rails developers will join the bandwagon. what is stunning me is the fact that, even if

Mongrel - good enough?
I want to deploy RoR site''s (Intranet) for small offices/businesses that will get light traffic (estimating at max about 40 hits per minute at peak times). Lots of AJAX going on more than anything (update checks to the DB - Postgresql). I''d rather not use Lighttd, Apache, etc. as I want to have a streamlined install that is very easy for the end users. The catch is I

Using Gettext To Translate Your Rails Application
Hi, Has anyone has any success using the gettext translation methods mentioned in this wiki page? http://manuals.rubyonrails.com/read/chapter/105 I got up to running the localize script at which point it protests about not being able to find ''gettext/rgettext'' from the require line at the top of the script: script/localize:8:in `require'': no such file to load --

FastCGI vs. Simple CGI
I''ve seen several postings where FastCGI is being used with RoR projects, yet, most of the material I''ve read (Dave Thomas'' book, online articles, etc) recommend not using FastCGI anymore because it is a dormant project and hasn''t been updated since 2003 (I think???). So, I went out and got Simple CGI instead. It had to be compiled and installed from

Problem with lighttpd
I have a problem with lighttpd on OSX. Everything builds fine (and webrick runs just fine) but lighttpd barfs: edward-kenworthys-computer:~/Development/Ruby/pricematic/trunk edward$ script/server => Booting lighttpd (use ''script/server webrick'' to force WEBrick) => Rails application started on http://0.0.0.0:3000 => Call with -d to detach => Ctrl-C to shutdown

Difficult process of restarting SCGI, Lighttpd, Apache, sessions
I''ve managed to get Rails working using Apache->Lighttpd->SCGI. Restarting everything is really difficult. This appears to be the process: - stop apache - stop lighttpd - stop scgi - make sure scgi still isn''t running (it sometimes does) - if it is, kill it - delete all session files (they often cause permission errors) - start scgi - start apache - start lighttpd - cross

Starting lighttpd/Rails apps as user, not root
Hi everyone, When I want something to start at boot, I put it into /etc/rc*. The service will start as root, though. How do I make it start as a particular user? I''m worried about the machine going down and me not being around to pick my app back up when it does. I think this would also help my SwitchTower issue of having 8 fastcgi processes running for the app. 4 started by

Can someone please explain Lighttpd + Mongrel + Rails.
I know that Mongrel is a web server that hosts rails applications. But i don''t understand what part Lighttpd (or Apache) has in the setup. I know that you can use Mongrel on its own. What does Lighttpd improve on? Thanks, Chris -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

production environment
So I''m getting ready to setup a production environment on my boxen (running Fedora Core 3), what are my options? I''ve seen a number of posts about FastCGI, SCGI, etc. and am completely lost as to what I should be setting up on my box (that I hopefully won''t have to touch for a while). I need to run Collaboa, Typo and probably 3 or 4 other apps on this, so
