foreach + snowfall for multicore situations
Hello dear R community.
I just started playing with the snowfall package (a wrapper for the snow
package), and found it very convenient.
(See also this great website:
http://www.imbi.uni-freiburg.de/parallel/ )
I was wondering if it is possible to connect snowfall with the foreach
package (since it has some connection to snow).
My final goal is to do some simple parallel simulations on my two

platform specific "Depends" argument?
Dear R users,
we have a problem when building R packages which depend on platform
specific packages. The following example will illustrate our problem:
For parallel computing (in our own package) we want to use the multicore
package. Since multicore is not available for Windows we subtitute it by
the snowfall package. Currently we create two packages with different

Gracias y saludos,
Javier

parallel computing package on a multicore windows workstation
Hi,
I would like to get suggestion about parallel computing package on a
multicore windows workstation. I tried doSMP, but it crashes R a lot. I am
wondering if "snow" and "snowfall" can be used on a single workstation (i,e,
not cluster). At suggestion would be appreciated,
Best,
Richard

splitting a string by space except when contained within quotes
I've been trying to split a space delimited string with double-quotes in R
for some time but without success. An example of a string is as follows:
/rainfall snowfall "Channel storage" "Rivulet storage"/
It's important for us because these are column headings that must match the
subsequent data.
Here is some code I've been trying:

snowfall sfInit error
Dear all,
I am trying to execute the simple example in snowfall
http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/snowfall/vignettes/snowfall.pdf ...
require(snow)
require(snowfall)
sfInit( parallel=TRUE, cpus=2 )
sfLapply( 1:10, exp )
sfStop()
I have installed the snow and snowfall packages in R on a machine with
windows xp, however, after running the "sfInit( parallel=TRUE, cpus=2 )"

Can't reliably use RefClass methods in Snowfall
Greetings,
I am trying to use Reference Class methods in Snowfall, using R 2.12.1
on Ubuntu Natty. Using then directly seems to work (stanza 2 below),
but using them indirectly does not (stanza 3 below). I get an "attempt
to apply non-function" error.
In addition to exporting the instance of the object I created to the
Snowfall slaves, I also made several attempts to export the

binary operators that never return missing values
Hi, I work with data sets with lots of missing values. We often need
to conduct logical tests on numeric vectors containing missing values.
I've searched around for material and conversations on this topic,
but I'm having a hard time finding anything. Has anyone written a
package that deals with this sort of thing? All I want are a group of
functions like the ones I've posted

Snow/Snowfall hangs on windows 7
Dear users,
I want to set up R to use one R-script directory and one R-library (directory for packages) for many end-users. I try to do this by using one network-share. This works fine as long as we don't use the snowfall package with parallel=TRUE (sfInit(parallel=TRUE, cpus=4, type="SOCK")).
When running R with default settings (local library and local script directory)

undefined S4 class in parallel computing at snowfall
Dear All,
I have a question of how to export S4 class specification to
clusters/workers in parallel computing. The package I used is snowfall. The
problem is reproducible as follows. Any hint is greatly appreciated.

sfInit(parallel = TRUE, cpus = 2)

RPostgreSQL && snowfall
Dear expeRts,
I'm currently trying to get data from a PostgreSQL database _in parallel_.
I tried two methods:
* passing the DBI Connection object to the cluster nodes
* connecting the the DB on each node
(1)
The execution of the first method looks like this:
> result = sfClusterApplyLB(input, fun, dbiCon)
and produces an "expired PostgreSQLConnection" error.

readLines without skipNul=TRUE causes crash
hi, thanks Dr. Murdoch
i'd appreciate if anyone on r-help could help me narrow this down? i
believe the segfault occurs because there's a single line with 4GB and also
embedded nuls, but i am not sure how to artificially construct that?
the lodown package can be removed from my example.. it is just for file
download cacheing, so `lodown::cachaca` can be replaced with
`download.file`

Problem with R on dual core under Linux - can not execute mpi.spawn.Rslaves()
Hi
I am trying to utilize my dual core processor (and later a
High-performance clusters (HPC) ) by using the Rmpi, snow, snowfall,
... packages, but I am struggling at the beginning, i.e. to initialise
the "cluster" on my dual core computer. Whenever I try to initialize
it (via sfInit(parallel=TRUE, cpus=2) or mpi.spawn.Rslaves(nslaves=2)
), I get an error message:

readLines without skipNul=TRUE causes crash
hi, thank you for attempting this. it looks like your unix machine unzipped
the txt file without corruption -- if you copied over the same txt file to
windows 7, i don't think that would reproduce the problem? i think it
needs to be the corrupted text file where R.utils::countLines( txtfile
) gives 809367. i am able to reproduce on two distinct windows machines
but no guarantee i'm

readLines without skipNul=TRUE causes crash
hi, i realized that the segfault happens on the text file in a new R
session. so, creating the segfault-generating text file requires a
contributed package, but prompting the actual segfault does not -- pretty
sure that means this is a base R bug? submitted here:
https://bugs.r-project.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=17311 hopefully i am
not doing something remarkably stupid. the text file

Problems with snowfall
Guys,
Is anyone using snowfall? It seems that the last version is broken. sfinit
contains test code:
data("config", package = "snowfall")
configM <- as.matrix(t(config))
config <- as.list(configM)
names(config) <- dimnames(configM)[[2]]
.sfOption$SERVER <<- as.character(config[["SERVER"]])
.sfOption$PORT <<-
