After compiling R-1.9.1 on AIX 5.2 using the IBM cc compiler, I ran the
checks. One of them failed. Here is the output from running the check solo.

Gelman 2006 half-Cauchy distribution
Hi,
I am trying to recreate the right graph on page 524 of Gelman's 2006
paper "Prior distributions for variance parameters in hierarchical
models" in Bayesian Analysis, 3, 515-533. I am only interested, however,
in recreating the portion of the graph for the overlain prior density
for the half-Cauchy with scale 25 and not the posterior distribution.
However, when I try:

R-beta: Problem with `rpois'
There is a problem with `rpois'. It does seem to take care about the
order of the arguments. This is an example:
> rpois(n=1,lambda=2)
[1] 3
> rpois(lambda=2,n=1)
[1] 2 0
It obviously uses the first argument as the number of samples to be
drawn, which is wrong.
I used Version 0.49 Beta (April 23, 1997).

There is no section in the FAQ equivalent to "Using R". The "R Basics" is too
basic. I would say it addresses "meta-R" questions, such as installing.
I had a FAQ that I would think would be a basic "Using R" question, namely: "How

Simple Umacs example help..
Hello all...
I am just starting to teach myself Bayesian methods, and am
interested in learning how to use UMacs. I've read the
documentation, but the single example is a bit over my head at the
level I am at right now. I was wondering if anyone has any simple
examples they'd like to share. I've successfully done a couple of
simple gibbs examples, but have had a hard time

R-beta: Compile error; R-0.60.1, Solaris 2.6, gcc 2.7.2.1
Hi!
I have just downloaded the R-0.60.1 sources and have problems compiling R
on a Sun Ultra 1 running Solaris 2.6 and gcc 2.7.2.1.
I have not been able to find to find any compiling hints in the
documentation or the FAQ.
After ./configure I use make and get the output below.
Any hints are welcome.
I am not on the list, so please answer me directly too.
Best regards
Jens

Simulating a variable following an arbitrary distribution
Hi, I'd like to know if there's anything in R that could help me do
that. Let's suppose I have a density function of a random variable, for example
f(x) = (x^3)/4 0 < x < 2 and I would like to simulate it. For the common
distributions (exponencial, gamma, cauchy) there are the r-functions (rgamma,
rexp, runif, rcauchy, and so on).. But when the variable I want to simulate is

superimpose density line over hist
Hi all,
I'm trying to superimpose a rchisq density line over a histogram with
something like:
hist(alnlength)
lines(density(rchisq(length(alnlength), 4)),col="red")
But the rchisq line won't appear anywhere,
Anyone knows what I am missing here?
Thanks in advance,
Albert.

problems compiling R-0.63.3 on alpha
Hi again !
Thanks for the info on updating the config.site file which I
have done. I have also added -lm in the Makeconf manually
because this is needed explicitly for DEC cc.
However, there are still a few problems when linking some
of the files as you can see from the enclosed log.
Ciao,
Andreas

OT: distribution of a pathological random variate
Folks,
I wonder if anything could be said about the distribution of a random variate x, where
x = N(0,1)/N(0,1)
Obviously x is pathological because it could be 0/0. If we exclude this point, so the set is {x/(0/0)}, does x have a well defined distribution? or does it exist a distribution that approximates x.
(The case could be generalized of course to N(mu1, sigma1)/N(mu2, sigma2) and one

plotting functions of chi square
Hi! This is going to be a real newbie question, but I can't figure it out.
I'm trying to plot densities of various functions of chi-square. A simple
chi-square plot I can do with dchisq(). But e.g. chi.sq/degrees of freedom I
only know how to do using density(rchisq()/df). For example:
plot(1, type="n", xlab="", ylab="", xlim=c(0,2), ylim=c(0,7))

R Compilation gets stuck on Windows 64
Please note that building R on Windows is documented in "R Installation
and Administration", including links to external software. Particularly
there is a link to texinfo which is part of Rtools. The documentation is
maintained and it is a sufficient source of information for building R
on Windows.
