Using sample() to sample one value from a single value?
Hi, consider this one as an FYI, or a seed for further discussion. I am aware that many traps on sample() have been reported over the years. I know that these are also documents in help("sample"). Still I got bitten by this while writing sample(units, size=length(units)); where 'units' is an index (positive integer) vector. It works in all cases as expected (=I expect)

Question on approximations of full logistic regression model
Hi, I am trying to construct a logistic regression model from my data (104 patients and 25 events). I build a full model consisting of five predictors with the use of penalization by rms package (lrm, pentrace etc) because of events per variable issue. Then, I tried to approximate the full model by step-down technique predicting L from all of the componet variables using ordinary least squares

Paid R Help
Hello R people, I am looking to pay someone to help write some R code. Inputs: Study identifier: ID Number for the study, each ID number is for one study only each block set should only be used for that study. This will require that you store the results from the blocks someplace on the file system. Trait #1: dichotomous rural / urban Trait #2: dichotomous sick / healthy Assignment Ratio:

enter a survey design in survey2.9
Hi dears, I expect that Mr Thomas Lumley will read this message. I have data from a complexe stratified survey. The population is divide in 12 regions and a region consist to and urban area and rural one. there to region just with urbain area. stratification variable is a combinaison of region and area type (urban/rural) In rural area, subdivision are sample with probabilties proporionnal to

Creating a Legend
Dear all, I'm trying to create a legend for my graph. I hope to have the title as "Land Use Type" and the two elements being "Urban" and "Rural" with a red point and green point respectively. So far I have the following command, but obviously it isn't correct: > legend("topright", title="Land Use Type", cex=0.75, pch=16,

dataframes of unequal size
I have two dataframes C and C1. Each has three columns viz. state, psu and weight. The dataframes are of unequal size i.e. C1 could be 2/25/50 rows and C has 42000 rows. C1 is the master table i.e. C1$state, C1$psu and C1$weight are never the same. ThisA. P., Urban, 0 is not so for C. For example C state, psu, weight A. P., Urban, 0 Mah., Rural, 0 W.B., Rural,0 Ass., Rural,0 M. P., Urban,0 A. P.,

Returning Data Frame from Function for use Outside Function
I have a function (see below) that does some bootstrapping (I am happy to expand offline why I could use existing functions.) I put my results into and empty matrix and add a row of results with each iteration. My problem is i am a new user to R and I don't understand data frames, matrices, elements, and vectors well. What I would like is to have a data frame I can manipulate outside of the

OT - Number Portability
Sorry for the off-topic, but perhaps this will be of interest to other asterisk based ITSPs. We are starting service in a rural area where the ILEC has the rural "monopoly". From what we have read in the FCC docs this does NOT exempt them from number portability, but what does it take for us to qualify to receive their numbers? To date we simply have a few voice trunks to them,

3-dimensional table
Hi, Last week my class conducted an experiment by putting out clay caterpillars to look at the effects of urbanization, color, and location on caterpillar predation. There were two sites (urban, rural), three colors (green, yellow, red) and two locations at each site (edge, interior). The entire data set is below. I've checked out the MASS book, Dalgaard's book, and the R-help archives

Asterisk in a rural project
We have working in a rural project and I have selected Asterisk. Because * will work with a prepay system we need a precise answer supervision for outgoing calls. The pilot system will have 8 trunks to PSTN. The Telephone Company provides EURO BRI and analog CO trunks. On CO trunks the answer supervision is reversal polarity. The village to be served will be connected through a WLAN. Thus,

live audio feed via telephone link
I'm looking into costs and feasibility of moving a live feed from a FM radio station from the station to a point that's past the usable range of their radio signal. It's a rural location and Internet service is not available at the station. If the destination was closer or their transmitter was more powerful, I could avoid this step and just plug in a radio, but.... My best idea so

Likelihood ratio test between glm and glmer fits
Dear list, I am fitting a logistic multi-level regression model and need to test the difference between the ordinary logistic regression from a glm() fit and the mixed effects fit from glmer(), basically I want to do a likelihood ratio test between the two fits. The data are like this: My outcome is a (1,0) for health status, I have several (1,0) dummy variables RURAL, SMOKE, DRINK, EMPLOYED,

Bill seconds
Hi all, We've installed Asterisk on a rural development project and we're testing a prepaid phone service. As far as now we're having terrific service results but there's a problem with the calls billing at our local telecom. For instance, a farmer buys a 1 dollar phone card and use it to dial a USA number, the call should lasts for 60 seconds. Asterisk is doing a great job

speeding up likelihood computation
R Users: I am trying to estimate a model of fertility behaviour using birth history data with maximum likelihood. My code works but is extremely slow (because of several for loops and my programming inefficiencies); when I use the genetic algorithm to optimize the likelihood function, it takes several days to complete (on a machine with Intel Core 2 processor [2.66GHz] and 2.99 GB RAM). Computing

R CMD check: Error in .C
Function/file names are hypothetical. Say I have written myfunction.R, which calls myfunction.c via .C("myfunction", ...). I've compiled successfully myfunction.c via R CMD SHLIB myfunction.c in the terminal. Then, in the R console: dyn.load("myfunction.so") source("myfunction.R") test <- myfunction() # works fine So everything is in order, myfunction works

crosstable and regression for survey data (weighted)
I have survey data that I am working on. I need to make some multi-way tables and regression analyses on the data. After attaching the data, this is the code I use for tables for four variables (sweight is the weight variable): > a <- xtabs(sweight~research.area + gender + a2n2 + age) > tmp <- ftable(a) Is this correct? I don't think I need to use the strata and cluster

vlmc - "In vlmc(traffic.clusters.stationary, cutoff = i) : alphabet with >1-letter strings; trying to abbreviate"
Dear all (copying the package author), I have a question on the vlmc package. I am trying to model a time series, where each element can take one of 11 values (the result of some clustering). When I run the following command (synthetic data to facilitate self-contained example) I get the following warning: ("alphabet with >1-letter strings; trying to abbreviate") +++ START+++ >

vcov.nlminb
Hello all, I am trying to get the variance-covariance (VCOV) matrix of the parameter estimates produced from the nlminb minimizing function, using vcov.nlminb, but it seems to have been expunged from the MASS library. The hessian from nlminb is also producing NaNs, although the estimates seems to be right, so I can't VCOV that way either. I also tried using the vcov function after minimizing
