webrick / winxp won''t stop serving cached file??
Hi Working through the tut material in teh PP book (agile dev with rails) on a laptop running winxp. Creating the "admin" application, things generally work great. Except: at teh end of chapter 6, when we update teh css to improve the look of the page - I copy the new scaffold.css into my working directory, but webrick keeps serving the old css, even after a restart. Very odd. The

How dows RoR work?
This is so frustrating. Is RoR that easy to learn or is it hype or is it just me? I wonder how many newbies like me are surfing the docs trying to get a clue of the basics. Every tutorial I find is much the same, and seems to skip the fundmental parts. How should you understand the Ruby API http://api.rubyonrails.org/? What is < ActionController::Base? Can''t I set a cookie under

When to dive into Rails?
Hello people! This is my first post here and generally the first post I''m making on the web regarding Ruby or Rails. I come from PHP and especially Joomla. I can''t say I have done some "serious" development till now. I''ve developed small projects but never something ''big''. But these last months I''m very productive and I have a

Dynamic form? Not really!
Hi guru''s out there, Im happilly coding my first rails app, and all goes well. I find myself manually coding in a particular field all the time (company_id), that relates the contact to a company. The total coding of this form seems somewhat much. Could somebody tell me what Rails power I''m possibly missing and stuborn as I am trying to do myself? I was wondering if the

NewbieQ - Relational tables
Hi all, I''m going nuts on a very simple issue. I know what I want but don''t know what to tell rails to do so. I have a very common setup for managing contacts. A companies table and a contacts table. As you''ve guessed it''s a one to many relationship. The database is setup with the appropriate foreign keys, the models have been generated and I added the

MVC design good/bad
I am curious what you find is good and bad MVC design. Let''s use the find and find_by_sql methods as examples. Currently I have these spread out all over the place... View: here I have some find methods when I am for example populating a select list with choices in a form. Controller: here I have the simpler find methods. Model: here I have the more complicated find methods (usually

KISS and DRY? Not even close!
Hi all, After working on my first rails app and having handed over some very sophisticated coding from a lot of you guys. My app does what I want it to do, but I''m no where near the end yet, and it seems that the KISS and DRY objectives already went down the drain. It could be lack of knowledge, only doing Ruby on (and) Rails for a month, but I''m stuck on the following:

Why Ruby on Rails
Our company is mainly made up off application developers but we have a lot of web work coming up so we are deciding which route to take at the moment. We initially identfied ASP.NET 2.0 with the ATLAS AJAX framework because of the RAD features, easy to learn etc. I had read some stuff on ROR and our Boss who is open minded allowed me to create a sample application with ROR. He was impressed

combining two models in one controller/view "set"
I''m going to take another stab at this question (my first one received no replies): I have two models: Author has_many: books Book has_one: author I have two tables: authors id ... books id author_id ... I let the scaffolding fly and it created the CRUD goodness for each model, as expected. However, I want to have only one view/controller "set" for both models; when I

design patterns
Hi everyone I''m Maximiliano Guzenski from Brazil and I am programing on ruby on rails only a couple of months. I read a lot of books and articles about it but I could not clarify some doubts about design patterns: 1) Is it really good put some sql command on controller? because all articles that I see use sql into controllers, like: # my controller @categories = Category.find

Demo in rails2.pdf of add_price migration, PostgreSQL 8.1.4
People, I''m looking at the migrate example on p 74 of the rails2.pdf It''s a simple example of using a migration to add a column to the products table. Here is a copy of the migration file named 002_add_price.rb after I generated and then edited it: class AddPrice < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up add_column :products, :price, :decimal, :precision => 8, :scale

Best Practices question regarding views & controllers
Hi List! I''m reading the Agile book, as many online articles as I can, but there''s still some things that are just too hard to answer for yourself. In building my application, I often find myself putting code into my views of which I am not quite certain it belongs there. Where do you usually draw the line? Is it okay to, say, loop through an array of hashes that represents

Open Source UML Tool for Ruby on Rails?
I am new to web development, Ruby on Rails, and UML as well. I was wondering if there were any free tools available for UML design. There is a list of free tools on wikipedia under UML tools, but I don''t understand if I need a tool that supports the ruby language. If anyone uses a free UML tool for designing Ruby on Rails apps, please let me know what you use.

where''d we come from?
I''m curious -- how many of us came to Rails from other branches of the OO world -- Java, C# -- and how many of us came from the design or non-OO scripting worlds? Reason I ask is that I''m finding Rails a blast and very productive, but I think one reason is that I already cut my teeth on MVC and ORM during two years of writing apps with J2EE/Struts/Hibernate. And in Javaland, it
