read.xls: number of sheets
Hi,
I'm trying to read several Excel sheets from an Excel file into a
list. I'm using
read.xls from package 'gdata'. I would like to know how I can
check the number of sheets before the loop (in the example below) so
that I could adjust the loop counter? Any suggestions?
DF.list <- list()
for (i in 1:4) {
DF.list[[i]] <- read.xls("sample_file.xls", sheet=i,

question on lmList
Hi list,
Using the lmList function from ?nlme package? I get the following error message:
?Error in !unlist(lapply(sum.lst, is.null)) : invalid argument type?
# this is the syntax used
# fm_cream <-lmList(MULTDV~TIME|cod, data=zz, na.action=na.omit)

When I generate a simple example the function works, but on the real data I get that message. I imagine that it is a

4 questions regarding hypothesis testing, survey package, ts on samples, plotting
Good morning!
I have 4 questions which trouble me:
1. I want to test the hypothesis that the 2 proportions (the mean of a binomial) which come from 2 different samples are equal. I want to use the following function
z= (p1-p2)/ sqrt((p1(1-p1)/n1)+(p2(1-p2)/n2)) which is one of the standard formulas for this case. Is there such a function in R?
p1=the proportion from the first sample

Updating a worksheet in Excel file using RODBC
Hello!
I have no problem reading Excel files (each worksheet in the file is a "table" which can be read - at least in my case).
What I would like to do is to read such a table, change it (just the contents, not the format) and write it back, and this I can not do. I am getting the following error messages (3 slightly different attempts):

I want to use the lme package for a multilevel analysis on the following example:

Error when writing to Excel files using the packages xlsx and xlsx2
Dear group,
I am working on a rather big project where the output data frames have
dimensions of 3000 x 15 or greater. We are using xlsx and xlsx2 to write the
data.frames to Excel sheets.
Since recently we get the following error, when trying to write the data
frames to the excel sheets:
Error in ls(envir = envir, all.names = private) :
invalid 'envir' argument
We figured out that

I tried using WriteXLS, but get the message " In system(cmd) : perl not found"

WriteXLS, but I do not have PERL installed, and if not needed, do not wish to
install it.)
I am also familiar with write.table, but if possible, wish to

I've searched the known bugs and hopefully I did not oversee this one...

Simple Question About Exporting Back to Excel
All,
Relatively new R user so this is probably an easy question to answer.
I am able to generate a cluster for my dataset using hclust() then ploting
the data with plot().
This results in an image with a dendrogram with my sample names along the
bottom. Great!
However, I now need a way to get that sample order from the image into
excel.
i.e. sample 7 was on the far left, sample 19 was in

Importing multiple worksheets from one Excle/ csv file into R
Dear R experts,
I am trying to import some data from some Excle files into R. My Excle file
contains about 50 sheets.
One solution I can think about is to convert my Excle file into csv file
first and then load data into R using 'read.csv'.
But it seems to me that 'read.csv' only supports reading one sheet (or 'one
file') each time, so that seems I have to create 50 csv
