Negative Binomial Predictions
Good Day All,
I have a negative binomial model which I have developed using the MASS
library. I now would like to develop some predictions from it.
Running the predict.glm (stats library) using type="response" gives me a
non-integer value which was rather puzzling. I would like to confirm
that this is actually the mean predicted value of the probability mass
function as opposed

Error message when calculating BIC
Hi All,
Could someone help me decode what this error means ?

Error in log(attr(object, "nobs")) :

BTW, nb.80 is a negative binomial glm model created using the MASS
library with the call at the bottom of the message
In the hopes of trying to figure this out I tried the following
workaround but it did not work

Proper / Improper scoring Rules
Hi All,
I am working on some ordinal logistic regresssions using LRM in the
Design package. My response variable has three categories (1,2,3) and
after using the creating my model and using a call to predict some
values and I wanted to use a simple .5 cut-off to classify my
probabilities into the categories.
I had two questions:
a) first, I am having trouble directly accessing the

Plotting series with no data in xyplot
Good Day All,
I am working on some xyplots using the Lattice Library. My X-axis is
the date and I am reproducing charts similar to those found in the R
Gallery (see here:
http://www.sr.bham.ac.uk/~ajrs/R/gallery/plot_midday_weather_profiles.txt)
However, the key difference is that some of my data is missing (not
collected at that time). For instance, I might have a whole month that

Cross Validation output
Good Day All,
I have a negative binomial model that I created using the function
glm.nb() with the MASS library and I am performing a cross-validation
using the function cv.glm() from the boot library. I am really
interested in determining the performance of this model so I can have
confidence (or not) when it might be applied elsewhere
If I understand the cv.glm() procedure correctly, the

Getting information encoded in a SAS, SPSS or Stata command file into R.
Dear folks ?
I have a large (26 gig) ASCII flat file in fixed-width format with about 10
million observations of roughly 400 variables. (It is 51 years of Current
Population Survey micro data from IPUMS, roughly half the fields for each
record). The file was produced by automatic process in response to a data
request of mine.
The file is not accompanied by a human-readable file giving the

Playing with ReadFileScatter()
Hi all,
Looking at the IO.readlines source in io.c, it looks to me like they
grab 8k chunks, split on the input record separator, and buffer accordingly.
Since it looks like ReadFileScatter() does some of that work
automatically (in page file sized chunks), I thought I''d give it a try.
Here''s what I''ve got, but it doesn''t work. I have an incorrect parameter

Failure of sas7bdat package
R 2.15.1

Colleagues
I have been an enthusiastic user of the sas7bdat package in R. However, several recent sas7bdat files sent to me from different sources cannot be read by the package. The error message is:
Error in read.sas7bdat(FILENAME) :

writeForeignSAS and potential extensions
Dear R-devel,
I've made some potential extensions to writeForeignSAS
in 'foreign' that I wanted to pass along if anyone is
interested. I've attached the diff -u output against
the version found in foreign_0.8-15 and an .R file
with my changes. (In this .R file, the function is named
writeForeignSAS7 to simplify testing/comparisons.)
I've tried to alter the current

Calling LISP programs in R
I have written some programs in Common Lisp and I have been using SAS to pipe
those programs to my lisp compiler in batch mode by using the %xlog and
%xlst SAS commands. I wonder if there is in R a similar way to pipe commands
to LISP so that all my work would be concentrated in R even when I have to
call a LISP program? I have looked at the foreign library but this seems to
adjust data types not

PROC MIXED RANDOM equivalence in R nlme
I am trying to reproduce some old SAS PROC MIXED code using R and nlme.
The data consists of emission readings from vehicles and fuel
properties. All variables are real numbers except "study" and "vehicle",
which are character. Unfortunately, since the data are confidential, I'm
unable to provide an example.
The original SAS v6.12 code is provided below:

PROC MIXED RANDOM equivalence in R nlme
Dear Dennis,
Your question assumes that people know both SAS PROC MIXED and R nlme. Only
a limited number of people do. Add the mathematical formulation of the
model. That will increase the number of people that can help you. Adding
the number of levels in each categorical variable and the number of
observation per group is useful too.
Best regards,

Problems with foreign
Good day
My name is Jos? Oscar, I'm from Mexico and I have some questions about
foreign in your write.foreig( ) function. We know that this function
generates the inputs to be able to run them or execute them in another
program like SPSS, SAS or Stata. In these cases, when creating an example
file, a matrix and using the function to execute the .sps file directly
from SPSS, I don't care or
