Failure loading library into second R 2.3.1 session on Windows XP
Hi. I am using R 2.3.1 on Windows XP. I had installed a library package into my first session and wanted the same package in my second session, so I went out to the CRAN mirror and tried to install the package, and got the following message: ********************************************************************* >utils:::menuInstallPkgs() trying URL

Non-positive definite cross-covariance matrices
I am creating covariance matrices from sets of points, and I am having frequent problems where I create matrices that are non-positive definite. I've started using the corpcor package, which was specifically designed to address these types of problems. It has solved many of my problems, but I still have one left. One of the matrices I need to calculate is a cross-covariance matrix. In other

dovcot+offlineimap+gmail: INBOX empty, mail doubled
Hello I have used for years offlineimap-6.2.0 dovecot-imapd 1:1.2.9 in Kubuntu 10.04 Together with a imap server of my university. Yesterday we switched to google, which I know, is not a real imap server. I have 2 problems and the first I think has to do with either an old version of offlineimap or a bad configuration file: - All folders are downloaded+ Gmail[All Mail] so doubling

KMO sampling adequacy and SPSS -- partial solution
Dear colleagues, I've been searching for information on the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) Measure of Sampling Adequacy (MSA). This statistic is generated in SPSS and is often used to determine if a dataset is "appropriate" for factor analysis -- it's true utility seems quite low, but it seems to come up in stats classes a lot. It did in mine, and a glance through the R-help

Hmisc label function applied to data frame
Hello, I'm attempting to create a data frame with correlations between every pair of variables in a data frame, so that I can then sort by the value of the correlation coefficient and see which pairs of variables are most strongly correlated. The sm2vec function in the corpcor library works very nicely as shown here: library(Hmisc) library(corpcor) # Create example data x1 = runif(50) x2 =

SPSS R-Menu for Ordinal Factor Analysis
Dear all, I am trying to conduct an enhanced version of factor analysis with a SPSS interface that allows to use R. This approach has been suggested in the recent article: Basto, M. and J.M. Pereira An SPSS R-Menu for Ordinal Factor Analysis. Journal of Statistical Software 46, pp. 1-29. My variables are ordinal-type and the tool of Basto allows to run polychoric correlations in the SPSS

significance levels for partial correlations?
I've seen that this question has been asked before, in the archives, but I haven't been able to find a workable answer. This may be a failure to understand the statistics! The problem is that, while I can easily get partial correlation values out of corpcor, how do I get significance values? Surely the significance of a partial correlation between two variables isn't the

how to include integrate in a function that can be solved with uniroot?
Hallo, I am trying to define expectation as an integral and use uniroot to find the distribution parameter for a given expectation. However I fail to understand how to define properly the functions involved and pass the parameters correctly. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Gerrit Draisma. This what I tried: ======= > # exponential density > g <- function(x,lambda){ lambda

creating empty cells with table()
Hello, Suppose I simulate 20 observations from the Poisson distribution with lambda = 4. I can summarize these values using table() and then feed that to barplot() for a graph. Problem: if there are empty categories (e.g. 0) or empty categories within the range of the data (e.g. observations for 6, 7, 9), barplot() does not include the empty cells in the x-axis of the plot. Is there any way to

garbage collection & memory leaks in 'R', it seems...
Hello developers, I noticed that if I am running 'R', type "rm(list=objects())" and "gc()", 'R' will still be consuming (a lot) more memory than when I then close 'R' and re-open it. In my ignorance, I'm presuming this is something in 'R' where it doesn't really do a great job of garbage collection... at least not nearly as well as

how do I make a correlation matrix positive definite?
Hi, If a matrix is not positive definite, make.positive.definite() function in corpcor library finds the nearest positive definite matrix by the method proposed by Higham (1988). However, when I deal with correlation matrices whose diagonals have to be 1 by definition, how do I do it? The above-mentioned function seem to mess up the diagonal entries. [I haven't seen this complication, but

Statistical querry on Partial correlation test
Hi R users, I want to calculate the partial correlation (first or second order) and their corresponding significance test (p-value). I used > library(corpcor) and "cor2pcor" function to calculate partial correlation but could not calculate "p-value". If some one knows the R package or function to calculate corresponding "p-value", It will be great help. Thanks

reshape with function(x,y)?
Hi, I'm not sure if this is impossible or if I just don't know the syntax. example: library(reshape); library(corpcor); data<-data.frame(ids=c("A","A","A","B","B","B"),rate=c(12,14,17,10,8,5),sample=c(100,80,60,50,40,45));

Activating html help in R 2.10
After reading the news about the release of R 2.10 I expected that typing for example ?cut would automatically open a web browser. But I don't see any difference in how help is displayed under Ubuntu Linux (karmic). How does one activate the new dynamic html help? Thanks Frank platform x86_64-pc-linux-gnu arch x86_64 os linux-gnu system x86_64,

Conversion of symmetry matrix into a vector
Dear R users, I am not good in R-language programming. So, i need your help. I want to convert my lower-triangle value of symmetry matrix into a vector with their row and column name. I found a function called "sm2vec" in "corpcor" package but it give only a vector of values but not row and column names. But i also want ROW and COLUMN name together with their corresponding

What does it mean by "initial value not available"?
Dear friends. I use ConstrOptim( ) and got error message "initial value not available". My understanding of "initial value not available" is that one of the following 3 cases happens: 1.The objective function is not well defined at the point of the initial value. 2. The differentiation of the objective function is not well defined at the point of the initial value. 3. The

biplot package II
Dear all, I've been learning biplot (Gabriel, 1971) and some days ago I sent for this list a procedural function with invitation for a collaborative package. Jari Oksanen made some suggestions and I agree with all. So, I reworked the function under the object-oriented programming (OOP/S3). I think it is now a good frame for more resources. Below it is the function and a small script to
