US county map question
Hi R-help: I'm just an old guy and new to this list... But have been using R for years now. I want to make a map of counties in the US with shaded colors that depend on the level of variable "Y" that I want to map. I have the US county and state fips codes and the Y variable. How do I do this? Please reply to pzs6@cdc.gov Thanks, Phil Smith pzs6@cdc.gov [[alternative HTML

difference between 2 dates: IN MONTHS the way Mothers compute it
Hi R-people: I need a function to compute the number of months between 2 dates, in the same way a mother would do it. For example, if a kid is born on February 6, the number of months between that date and March 7 is exactly 1 month, although it is only 29 days. Thank you! state map question
Hi R-Help: I want to produce a map of the US with different colors for selected states. I installed the map package, and then used: library(maps) I can see that by using map( 'state' ) you get the state boundaries, also. How do I fill in different colors for the different states? I see there is a col parameter for map, but can't see how to get it to work! Please reply

selecting columns from a data frame or data table by type, ie, numeric, integer
Good morning RGuru's I have a data frame of 575 columns.? I want to extract only those columns that are numeric(double) or integer to do some machine learning with.? I have searched the web for a couple of days (off and on) and have not found anything that shows how to do this.?? Lots of ways to extract rows, but not columns.? I have attempted to use "(x == y)" indices extraction

seq.Date not accepting NULL length.out (PR#9239)
There seems to be a bug in seq.Date such that it will not allow the user to pass in length.out =3D NULL, despite the fact that this is the = default argument. For example: > dt1 <- as.Date("2004-12-31") > dt2 <- as.Date("2005-12-31") > seq.Date(dt1, dt2, length.out =3D NULL, by =3D "month") Error in seq.Date(dt1, dt2, length.out =3D NULL, by =3D

question about boxplot
Here is a question from an old guy: I want to use the boxplot function as follows: boxplot( p.prop ~ R + bins ) This command makes nice boxplot for the factor "R" crossed with the factor "bins". I am having alot of trouble getting control of the labels on the X axis. I want to control it more by specifying what the labels are, controling the 'size' of those

as.Date.character speed improvement suggestion
R-Devel, I store and retrieve a large amount of financial data (millions of rows) in a PostgreSQL database keyed by date (and represented in R by class Date). Unfortunately, I frequently find that a great deal of processing time is spent converting dates from character representations to Date class representations in R, presumably because strptime is not fast for large vectors (>10,000

how can I write code to detect whether the machine is Windows or Linux?
Hi R-People: I use 2 machines: a machine with a Windows XP operating system, and another with a Linux Ubuntu OS. I transport my code between these 2 machines. However, pathnames to data files always need to be "adjusted" to account for the OS that I'm working on. Here is my question: How do I write code to detect whether I'm using the XP or the Linux machine? If I knew

howto convert matrix of numeric values to Date class?
Hi: I have a matrix, named "mat," of numeric values that are in days since Jan 1, 1960. I want to convert them Date class values so that I can do things like seq( value , len=10, by="1 week") where "value" is any of the matrix elements. How do I do this? restricted coefficient and factor in linear regression.
Hi, my data set is data.frame(id, yr, y, l, e, k). I would like to estimate Lee and Schmidts (1993, OUP) model in R. My colleague wrote SAS code as follows: ** procedures for creating dummy variables are omitted ** ** di# and dt# are dummy variables for industry and time ** data a2; merge a1 a2 a; by id yr; proc sysnlin maxit=100 outest=beta2; endogenous y; exogenous l e k

He probado con

computing distance in miles or km between 2 street addresses
Hi R-ers: I need to compute the distance between 2 street addresses in either km or miles. I do not care if the distance is a "shortest driving route" or if it is "as the crow flies." Does anybody know how to do this? Can it be done in R? I have thousands of addresses, so I think that Mapquest is out of the question! Please rely to: philipsmith at alumni.albany.edu Thank
