Problems using gamlss to model zero-inflated and overdispersed count data: "the global deviance is increasing"
Dear all,
I am using gamlss (Package gamlss version 4.0-0, R version 2.10.1, Windows XP Service Pack 3 on a HP EliteBook) to relate bird counts to habit variables. However, most models fail because “the global deviance is increasing” and I am not sure what causes this behaviour. The dataset consists of counts of birds (duck) and 5 habit variables measured in the field (n= 182). The dependent

Re: [users] CentOS 4.2 dag repo problem.
Hello,
It would be nice if we could get a full list of packages which have a wrong
sha1 checksum. I don't have the bandwidth for a full mirror of all of Dag's
rpms and i also don't have shell access to such a mirror. So a small
request for a mirror admin:
The following checks the files repodata/*.xml.gz against the sha1 sums in
repomd.xml and checks the RPMS/*.rpm files against

Repeated measures design for GAM? - corrected question...
Dear all,
I have a question on the use of GAM with repeated measures. My dataset is as follows:
- a number of study areas where bird abundance has been determined. Counts have been performed in 3 consecutive years and there were 2 counts per year (i.e. in total 6 counts).
- a number of environmental predictors that do not change over year Xi).
When using a GLM, a repeated measures design would

Fax Woes
Hi all,
I'm trying to get outgoing fax working from an SPA2102 to a PSTN fax machine
via a T.38 enabled trunk.? I've got
t38pt_udptl = yes
faxdetect=no
in my sip.conf file.? The ATA has all of the T.38 options turned on, echo
cancellation is off, as well as silence suppression off.? The only
configured codec is u711.?
When the user tries to send a fax, it gets to the point where it

Kruskal's MDS results
Dear List,
I'm trying to interpret the results of the Kruskal's Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling algorithm (isoMDS, MASS package).
The 'goodness of fit' is reported as "The final stress achieved (in percent)".
What does this mean exactly? I've tried to google for an answer but I've not come up with a definitive answer.

64 bit
Hello,
Presently I am considering using CentOS as my base OS. I am wondering about a
few things though. I like KVirc as my irc program. I have had issue with
compiling it in 64bit mode under Fedora 3 and was todl it was because Fedora
installs both 32 and 64 bit libs and the compiler didn't understnad which to
use. Will this be an issue with CentOS 4 also?
If I install the 64 bit

Dag repository...
A bit of a new guy around these parts...
I've done a bit of looking, and haven't found any newbie-friendly
instructions on how to add the Dag repository to my CentOS4 box. Could
somebody help me out and point me in the right direction? Thanks...

Clarification Needed: DAG vs. rpmforge.
Dag in the thread about kvirc, I had pointed to dries repo, based on a
list of repos I use *now*, that replaced your repo with rpmforge. This
based on an instruction earlier that I should use rpmforge instead. So
when I run my "yum --enablerepo=\* list...", it did not show your repo
contents.
Should I be including *both* rpmforge and dag?
TIA

How to properly install VLC?
Hi all,
My colleagues and friends from time to time send me .wmv files and I'd
like to be able to view them under CentOS.
VLC was recommended to me, and AFAIR about a half year ago I tried
installing it. I don't remember the exact details, but I do remember
that the Red Hat and Fedora binary distributions didn't work without
giving all sorts of errors. I _think_ I then did a

ATRpms repo question...
Hi. I'm fairly new with CentOS but have been using version 4.2 with
great satisfaction (Thank you!). I've been using repos such as Dag and
Dries successfully to keep my packages up to date. (I've seen many
posts which allow me to believe that these repos won't change CentOS
compatibility to RHEL4 or to migrate it another distro for that
matter!) My question applies to the

OpenSSH Security Advisory: buffer.adv
This is the 1st revision of the Advisory.
This document can be found at: http://www.openssh.com/txt/buffer.adv
1. Versions affected:
All versions of OpenSSH's sshd prior to 3.7 contain a buffer
management error. It is uncertain whether this error is
potentially exploitable, however, we prefer to see bugs
fixed proactively.

[OT] new R logo in vector graphics format
L.S.
Since some time there is a new r-project.org site as announced here:
https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-announce/2015/000581.html
The logo has changed on the site, but I fail to find a vector graphics file.
For the previous logo I used to go to
https://svn.r-project.org/R-dev-web/trunk/Logo/
Is there anything similar for the new logo?
Many thanks in advance.
Kind regards,
Tobias

for-loop with multiple variables changing
Hi all,
Never really managed to build a for-loop with multiple running
variables in an elegant way.
Can anybody hint ?
See below for an example of what I would like.
EXAMPLE

b<-c("name1","name2","name3")
for( number in a, name in b ) {
print( number ) ##take a value
print( name ) ##and have its name available from a second list
}
Does R
