Multilevel models with mixed effects in R?
Group, I am new to R. In my work as a program evaluator, I am regularly asked to estimate effect sizes of prevention/intervention and educational programs on various student outcomes (e.g. academic achievement). In many cases, I have access to data over three or more time periods (e.g. growth in proficiency test scores). I usually have multiple independent and dependent variables in each

Dissapearence of samba servers.
We have a LAN network consisting mostly of Win95 machines, with a couple of NT boxes and 3 Linux-based Samba servers. Throw in a VAX running Pathworks and a partridge in a pear tree. Anyway, it seems that since Monday all three of the Samba boxes have dissapeared from the browse lists (from the POV of the Windows users). Typing in \\server only gives a "Network name not found error."

Asking hard questions about the NUT architecture
I've spent the better part of two working days reading the NUT code and documentation and thinking about typical modern use cases for the software. I'm now questioning whether I want to get any further involved with this project, because it seems to me that the codebase is a huge and complicated pile of machinery mainly aimed at solving problems that no longer matter. I could be wrong

How do I code this conditional statement in Ruby
Hi, I am a COBOL programmer and I am busy teaching myself Rails and Ruby. In COBOL I can code this conditional If x = 1 next sentence else .......................... The "next sentence" statement enables me to get out of the conditional. How would I code the same thing in Ruby? In C you could use break but I understand that Ruby has no break statement. GUI developement / Matlab
Hi there, I was wondering whether there are flexible packages available with which you can create user interfaces? (I've read about "gWidgets"!?) For example in Matlab you can even create stand alone applications. Is it also possible for R in the same extend? Of course it should be platform independent if possible... And then I would like to know from people who know R as well

Many warnings in the newest R ...
Hello! I am using R 2.5.0 under Ubuntu 6.06, and I am not an expert. Recently, I think from the latest update some warning messages started to appear, when I use my old data-file and R-histories (hence, everything was done before and worked perfectly well). It seems to me that those are related to the Design package, but I am not sure. One is coming out after: > d = datadist(a,b,c) Warning

My newest problem - "gateway"
Hi, Folks, I think I have resolved the problem with the network. The two machines can now kind of see each other. :) The next question is, how do I make the Miggy the gateway? I went into the config and ticked the "gateway" and "translate IP names" buttons (or what ever it is just near the gateway button) and it didn't work. Cya! -- To know the road ahead, ask

Flash problems in newest upgrade?
Hi, I just upgraded to the newest kernel and Flash. Hulu now "grays out" when I try to go to full screen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the proprietary video drivers (no difference either way), so I'm guessing it has something to do with either the new Flash or the new kernel. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Thanks for any pointers. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.5
