Major difference in the outcome between SPSS and R statistical programs
Dear collegues, I have used R statistical program, package 'lmer', several times already. I never encountered major differences in the outcome between SPSS and R. ...untill my last analyses. Would some know were the huge differences come from. Thanks in advance, Ronald In SPSS the Pearson correlation between variable 1 and variable 2 is 31% p<0.001. In SPSS binary logistic

Major difference in the outcome between SPSS and R statisticalprograms
First off, Marc Schwartz posted this link earlier today, read it. http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#Why-are-p_002dvalues-not-di splayed-when-using-lmer_0028_0029_003f Second, your email is not really descriptive enough. I have no idea what OR is, so I have no reaction. Third, you're comparing estimates from different methods of estimation. lmer will give standard errors that

P values in non linear regression and singular gradients using nls
Dear all, We are trying to fit a non linear model to dispersal data. It seems that sometimes when the fit of the model of the data is not very good we start getting singular gradient errors. However if we modify slightly the data this won't occurr. We have also tried changing the initial parameter values and the algorithm for fitting in nls but didn't help. So we ended up programming a

ongoing progress
A couple of ideas about things that would be nice to see in rsync: 1. a "0.5v" option - something that would just show a progress either by file or by megabyte, ie "processing file 1,048 of 9,032" or "processing: 832 of 3,459 MB". The standard "verbose" is good for troubleshooting, but it's not very useful for gauging how much has been done and how

Update issue
I have ran rsync once and replicated 25 gigs of data. Now when I run rsync again it goes through all the files again. I thought it was only suppose to get new or changes files. Is there a special switch that I am suppose to use? Thanks SKP

Packages for Animal Models & QG analyses
Hi, I am looking to do some quantitative genetic analyses using animal models and was wondering if someone could suggest an appropriate package in R. It would help if it was similar to the ASReml genetic analyses software. [LLVMdev] Alias Analyses
Which alias analysis algorithms in opt are worth comparing against (for terms of precision)? I know --anders-aa seems to give me pretty good results. Online [1] it seemed to mention steensgaard's algorithm and some kind of data structure analysis, but neither of these are currently accepted by opt. Is there some way to get them, or are they subsumed by the results of --anders-aa? Thanks,

[LLVMdev] Chaining analyses from an analysis group
Hello, Two questions regarding analysis groups that ``chain'' their results, like AliasAnalysis. (1) I have an analysis group, let's call it Provider. I also have two implementations of it: ProviderA and ProviderB. The "writing a pass" document suggests using: au.addRequiredTransitive< Provider >(); Within the getAnalysisUsage() method of both ProviderA and

[LLVMdev] LLVM transformations dependences on analyses
what is the best way to quickly figure out the dependence on analyses for all llvm transformations ? Is this a document somewhere or I have to look into the getAnalysisUsage(AnalysisUsage &AU) const for all transformations. Thanks Xin

Ideas for remote collaboration on statistical analyses
I plan to use Sweave for most of the statistical reports I write for general statistical consulting projects. I would like to also have a way to collaborate with remote clients using a phone and a web server. This might involve a more incremental output process than Sweave uses. One could, for example, use a Wiki like that from twiki.org to upload pieces of an analysis as it proceeds, having

empirical A matrix for dynamic system and markov analyses
I'm working with a dynamic system that I've started to analyse using msm(I've emailed to chris, orignator of the program, separately, but maybe he's on holiday). I'd like to know if anyone has considered the relation between the markov analysis done with msm on the one hand, and dynamic system analysis done with MATLAB? That is, I'm working with a set of empirical data that

Complex surveys, properly computed SEs and non-parametric analyses
Can someone direct me to an R function that properly computes standard errors of data obtained from a complex survery design, i.e. perform alnalyses similiar to those that can be performed with SUDAAN, particularly for a non-parametric one-way ANOVA, e.g. signed rank test? independence of censoring in survival analyses
Dear all (not an R question per se, but given that the Real pRo's are all heRe I hope you foRgive) survival analyses assume that censoring is independent of hazard etc (eg, MASS 4th ed, pg. 354). Is there a standard test for this assumption? If there is not, what would you do to examine it empirically? (over and above some thinking about how censoring might be related to baseline factors).

Changed results in analyses run in sem and nlme ??
I'm uncertain how helpful it will be to give example code, but last week, this model gave an error message to the tune of "failed to converge" after about 5 minutes of run-time : library(nlme) model.A<- lme (fixed = avbranch~ wk*trt*pop , random = ~wk|ID/fam/pop, data=branch) It seemed that failure to converge made sense, since there were many weeks (wk) and values for

How to compare two residual variances coming from two independent simple regression analyses ?
Hello,   I'd like to compare the predictive power of two independent simple regression models, which relate to data sets with different numbers of points (n1 and n2). I think I could use a F-test to compare both residual variances, but I don't know whether it's a good idea or not. To my opinion, the numbers of degrees of freedom for the F-test would be respectively the number of
