Does the rsync/xdelta algorithm *need* to write a new file?
Hello,
lately I've been playing with the idea of doing in-place updates
of systems using either rsync or xdelta. However, both rsync
and xdelta seem to be dead set on writing a new file first, and
then atomically exchanging it with the old file.
Now, as I want to apply a binary delta to a full filesystem, bigger
than the available temporary space, this really makes rsync and

Automating migration of files from windows to samba
Has anyone figured out a good automated way to migrate files from
Windows Server to Samba Server without compromising file ownership and
permissions?
We could just log on as each user and then drag and drop using windows
explorer to preserve the permissions and ownership rights but that is
not a very efficient method.
We are using Samba with winbindd against a windows 2000 Domain

substituting elements in vector according to sample(unique(vector))
Hello!
Assuming I have a vector, such as
v <- c(1,2,1,2,3,3,1)
This vector has three unique elements: 1, 2, and 3.
> unique(v)
[1] 1 2 3
If I shuffle this vector of unique elements, I get something like this:
> sample(unique(v))
[1] 3 2 1
In the vector v I started with, I would now like to replace each element in
unique(v) with the corresponding element (i.e. the element with the

Wildcard expansion in remote files or recursion?
Hi all,
[Please CC me in replies, I am not subscribed to this list.]
First of all, thanks for puppet! It is a very nice tool and I''m in the (slow)
process of using it to manage my new Xen-based virtual server farm with it.
Most of the "simple" tasks worked well so far, and I may be able to add a few
recipies to the Wiki when I find time to do so.
However, is there any way

[LLVMdev] [LV] possible `vector.memcheck` regression when using `llvm.loop` and `llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access`
Adam,
Please find the attached test case (run with ToT opt -O3). As you can see,
`y_body` successfully is vectorized, though %33 and %46 are deemed MayAlias
despite their exclusive use in loads ands stores marked with
`llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access`.
Many Thanks,
Josh

[LLVMdev] Proposal for a Google summer of code project for the Java frontend.
The memory consumed by the code compiled is huge in server applications. And
it is not shared by different virtual machine instances. By contrast,
shared libraries
are memory mapped, therefore they are shared between different instances of the
executables using them. It is posible to throw away code after using
it, but then
compilation cost would be repeated.
And dynamic compilation prevents

[LLVMdev] [LV] possible `vector.memcheck` regression when using `llvm.loop` and `llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access`
It seems that at some point in the not-so-distant-past that the loop
vectorizer gained the ability to vectorize loops without explicit
`llvm.loop` & `llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access` metadata. While that's
awesome, there seems to be a regression in that
`llvm.mem.parallel_loop_access` metadata doesn't make it into the alias
analysis, and therefore a `vector.memcheck` basic block is

Here is the script I am running via cron:

chflags -R noschg /home/backup

Deleting columns based on the number of non-blank observations
Hello,
I have a dataset (named "x") with many (966) columns. What I would like to do is delete any columns that do not have at least 375 non-blank observations (i.e., the cells have some value in them besides NA).
How can I do this? I have come up with the following code to _count_ the non-blank observations in each column, but how would I adapt this code to _delete_ columns from the

moving-window (neighborhood) analysis
Hello all
I was wondering what would be the best way to do a moving-window
analysis of a matrix? By moving-window I mean that kind of analysis
common in GIS, where each pixel (matrix element) of the resulting map
is a function of it neighbors, and the neighborhood is a square
matrix.
I was hoping there was some function in R that could do that, where I
could define the size of the neighborhood,

How to test a plugin
Guys,
I''ve created a plugin, i wanna put my automated test there.
However, I got bad file descriptor error when i run the test like normal
unit test file:
"ruby plugins/acts_as_fox/test/acts_as_fox_test.rb"
How to test a plugin?
Also, is it right to say that I should only put my unit tests (but not
functional test for example) for the plugin in the plugin test folder?

Arel - clone bug (and fix), feature requests
Hi all,
I''ve been playing around with Arel this week (actually outside of Rails)
and found an issue with the clone implementation. I''ve added a patch and
a testcase here:
https://github.com/codders/arel/commit/660f706491ac012cb133554cffeaa6b9ae6046e9
and made a pull request against the rails/arel repo.
I''ve also been playing around with support for ordering on
