lattice --- different properties of lines corresponding to type=c("l", "a") respectively
I think the subject says it all. I want to make a simple lattice plot, using xyplot with the argument type=c("l","a"). The problem then is that in the resulting plot it is difficult/impossible to see which plot corresponds to the average and which to the individual profiles. I triedthings like extra arguments lwd=c(1,3) or col=c("blue","red") hoping

Systematically biased count data regression model
Dear all, I am attempting to explain patterns of arthropod family richness (count data) using a regression model. It seems to be able to do a pretty good job as an explanatory model (i.e. demonstrating relationships between dependent and independent variables), but it has systematic problems as a predictive model: It is biased high at low observed values of family richness and biased low at

Dear R users, A have a dataframe (matrix) with two collumns (plot, and diameter (d)). I want all diameters values for different combination of plots. For example I want all d values for all posible combination, 100C2 (all d values for plot 1 with all d values in the plot 2.......with all d values from plot 1 with all d values from plot 100, ...... with all d values from plot 99 with all d values

how to convert a data.frame to a list of dist objects for individual differences MDS?
I have a 45 x 16 data frame consisting of dissimilarities among 10 colors, giving in each column the 45 = 10*9/2 pairwise judgments for one of 16 subjects. The rownames identify each pair of colors, e.g, "AC" = ("A","C"), and the pairs are ordered by columns in the lower triangle of each distance matrix. > helm.raw <-

HELP...Running data
We are two french students and we have a problem concerning an exercize. We don't know how to resolve it. It would be fantastic if someone can help us. Thanks. Description: This study examined how the metabolic cost of locomotion varied with speed, stride frequency and body mass. Cost was determined by measuring oxygen consumption (?vo2?), analyzing the oxygen content in air inhaled and

runs.test in by() statement
Hi everybody I am a recent convert from SAS so please excuse me if this is all very obvious: I want to use the runs test {runs.test() in package tseries} to test the randomness of a certain variable in a survey for each interviewer. I tried to us the by() statement but it doesn't seem to work with runs.test() as the function. Here is what I have: Consider a data frame with two variables and

slow computation of functions over large datasets
Hello there, I’m computing the total value of an order from the price of the order items using a “for” loop and the “ifelse” function. I do this on a large dataframe (close to 1m lines). The computation of this function is painfully slow: in 1min only about 90 rows are calculated. The computation time taken for a given number of rows increases with the size of the dataset, see the example with

avoid <<- in specific case
Hi all, I improved a function drawing horizontal histograms (code below) which uses barplot and works fine. It does,however, need to assign a function to the global environment to later find the actual location on the vertical axis, and not the number of bars used by barplot. Hopefully, running the examples below will illustrate that. As said, it works perfectly fine and does exactly what I

How to interpret an ANOVA result?
Hello all, here's a real-world example: I'm measuring a quantity (d) at five sites (site1 thru site5) on a silicon wafer. There is a clear site-dependence of the measured value. To find out if this is a measurement artifact I measured the wafer four times: twice in the normal position (posN), and twice rotated by 180 degrees (posR). My data looks like this (full, self-contained code at

adding text to y-axis per row of panels (lattice)

I'd be very grateful if someone here on this list could perhaps help me out. I have a lattice plot with several panels and would like to add some text next to the y-axis on the right hand side of each row of
