More block diagonal matrix construction code
Folks:
In answer to a query, Andy Liaw recently submitted some code to construct a
block diagonal matrix. For what seemed a fairly straightforward task, the
code seemed a little "overweight" to me (that's an American stock analyst's
term, btw), so I came up with a slightly cleaner version (with help from
Andy):
bdiag<-function(...){
mlist<-list(...)

Direct sum of matrices
Hi R users:
How can I built a direct sum function of matrices in R?
I mean A(mxn), B(pxq), C(rxs),...
X<-ds(A,B,C,...)
X = [ A, 0, 0
0, B, 0
0, 0, C] ((m+p+r+...) x (n+q+s+...))
Thank you for your help.

If...while...or what else??
Dear R users,I come to you with a quite silly question I think, but I hope
you can answer me...
That is, I've got some problems in using the if and while conditions in a
loop.
Substantially, I want to select rows in a dataset depending on an index
variable (suppose it ranges from 1 to 5), so to make a specific analysis
(homemade of course) on thie new dataset. Mi first tought has been to do a

rbind for matrices - rep argument
Dear R users,I'm facing a trivial problem, but I really can't solve it. I've
tried a dozen of codes, but I can't get the result I want.
The question is: I have a dataframe like this one
[,1] [,2] [,3] [,4] [,5]
[1,] 1 2 3 4 5
[2,] 2 5 5 4 9
[3,] 1 6 8 1 2
[4,] 8 6 4 1 5
made up of decimal numbers, of course.
I want to

Block-diagonal matrix
Dear R-users,
Does anybody know how to construct a block-diagonal matrix (with the blocks being different matrixs, concerning the dimension and the values), without use loops ?
Thanks all,
Caio

matrix multiplication, tensor product, block-diagonal and fast computation
Dear R-users,
I am searching to the "best" way to compute a series of n matrix
multiplications between each matrix (mXm) in an array (mXmXn), and each
column of a matrix (mXn).
Please find below an example with four possible solutions.
The first is a simple for-loop which one might avoid; the second
solution employs the tensor product but then manually selects the right
outcomes. The

block diagonal matrix function
Hello List
I have just written a little function that takes two matrices as
arguments and returns a large matrix that is composed of the two input
matrices in upper-left position and lower-right position with a padding
value everywhere else. (function definition and toy example below). I
need nonsquare matrices and rowname() and colname() inherited appropriately.
Two questions:
(1) Is there a

Superposing mean line to xyplot
Dear R-users,
I'm using lattice package and function xyplot for the first time so
you will excuse me for my inexperience. I'm facing quite a simple
problem but I'm having troubles on how to solve it, I've read tons of
old mails in the archives and looked at some slides from?Deepayan
Sarkar but still can not get the point.
This is the context. I've got data on 9 microRNAs, each

diagonal matrices
Hello all,
I have matrices V.i of dimension n.i x n.i, where i = 1, ..., J, and the sum of n.i equals N. (and n.i ! = n.j)
goal: create one large matrix V, where V has matrices V.i on diagonal.
I create each matrix V.i in a for loop (1 to J), so each time I'd like to augment V with the
most recently calculated V.i, such that I'll have V after the final iteration of the for loop.

Fwd: multinomial regression for clustered data
Hello dear R-users,
does any of you know a way to perform a multinomial regression with
clustered data (i.e. repeated measurements)? I made the first analysis with
Stata option vce cluster in the mlogit command but was looking for a similar
functionality in R too...
thanks all!

multiple dimensional diag()
Hi
I have two arbitrarily dimensioned arrays, "a" and "b", with
length(dim(a))==length(dim(b)). I want to form a sort of
"corner-to-corner" version of abind(), or a multidimensional version
of blockdiag().
In the case of matrices, the function is easy to write and if
a=matrix(1,3,4) and b=matrix(2,2,2), then adiag(a,b) would return:

How to remove the call waiting tone without disabling callwaiting?
Hi,
The call waiting tone is very annoying (you hear nothing while it plays
the beep). I need callwaiting because of the queues (the phone has to
ring as soon as you hangup) but I want to remove the beep on my dahdi
channels, how can I do?
Thanks,
Niccol?

package check fail on Windows-release only?
I mistakenly left a write in "/tmp" in the rockchalk package (version
1.8.109) that I uploaded last Friday. Kurt H wrote and asked me to fix
today.
While uploading a new one, I became aware of a problem I had not seen.
The version I uploaded last Friday, 1.8.109, has OK status on all
platforms except r-release-windows-ix86+x86_64. I get OK on
oldrel-windows and also on devel-windows.

empty array
Hi the list
Is it possible to create an empty matrix ? I do not mean an matrix with
a single value that is NA (which is not empty) but a real empty one,
with length=0.
I do not understand why we have length(numeric()), length(factor()) and
length(character()) to zero, and length(array()) to one... Any rason for
that ?
Thanks

Sending SMS with a Portech MV-374 GSM Gateway
Hi,
I have a Portech MV-374 GSM Gateway and I'd like to send SMS from a web
page to confirm the subscriptions. How can I achieve it? Is Asterisk of
any use to send SMS with the Portech? I really have no idea because I
know nothing about the whole SMS thing...
Thanks,

I'm using a tarball from
http://bits.xensource.com/oss-xen/release/4.1.0/xen-4.1.0.tar.gz
It seems Thomas used the tools/ioemu-qemu-xen subdirectory as source for
xen-qemu-dm. At a first glance I didn't notice

how to limit the calls leaving a queue?
Hi,
I explain what I want to do..
All the operators share their phones. The number of the operator isn't
constant, so it's possible that two operators share all the phones.
They need to move all around, so they pick up the first phone they find.
If there are only few operator is very annoying for them to ear the
other phones ringing while they are at the phone!
So I'dd like to limit
