Partial comparison in string vector
Hi list members I have a vector of strings x=c("w","ex","ee") And I want to get a logical vector showing the positions where my search string "e" matches the elements partially, i.e. is at least the left-hand part of the target strings, i.e. I want to get a vector FALSE TRUE TRUE. Any ideas? Thanks Steve Powell proMENTE social research research |

R/S and large datasets - Database access (also Re: SAS and S/R)
A consensus seems to emerge : R would excel to exploratory work on small/middle-sized datasets, while SAS would be able to munch much larger datasets. However, I see the "size" problem as a red herring. The objects that have to stay "in core" are usually much smaller than the dataset. For example, for problems involving fixed-effects linear models, you need only some

R-beta: exchanging data between R/Splus and SPSS
Hi, is there any way to exchange (A LOT OF) data between SPPS and R/Splus, i.e., I want to get data from SPSS into R. It is a huge data frame with many columns being factors, so manual conversion is out of question (and there are more data to come). Exporting ASCII from SPSS seems to loose all level names, and the portable SPSS format doesn't look too nice. I've searched S-news and

Factor Analysis function source code required
Hi All, There were lot of diffrences in the R and SPSS results for Exploratory Factor Analysis.why is it so ?I used standard factor analysis functions like:-- factanal(m, factors=3, rotation="varimax") princomp(m, cor = FALSE, scores = TRUE, subset = rep(TRUE, nrow(as.matrix(m)))) print(summary(princomp(m, cor=TRUE),loadings = TRUE, cutoff = 0.2), digits = 2) prcomp(m, scale = TRUE)

dot - comma problem
Dear all I am trying to use the ODB package to connect to an libreoffice-odb database. The libreoffice package is german, thus, decimal separator is a comma. However, I can open the database and upload a it without error, library(ODB) db <- odb.open("Test.odb") but a soon as the "odb.open" command is executed, the decimal separator in R is changed to comma. Multivariate Multilevel Model: is R the right software for this problem
Hello, I've been trying to answer a problem I have had for some months now and came across multivariate multilevel modeling. I know MPLUS and SPSS quite well but these programs could not solve this specific difficulty. My problem: 9 correlated dependent variables (medical symptoms; categorical, 0-3), 5 measurement points, 10 time-varying covariates (life events; dichotomous, 0-1), N ~ 900.

Are you experienced in SAS and R as well? Which of these would you recommend?
Hello! Disapointed about SPSS I have to choose another statistic program. And altough I sympathise with the idea of a non-commercial software-project like R and I like the spirit of the R community (and of course I am not keen on paying 150$ to SAS for a one-year students license), I will probably buy SAS, because people I will work with use SAS and I want a close cooperation with them. Besides I

Weird problem with trying to change a variable
I have a dataframe called cvar, with two variables (among many others) called MSA and ACTUP. Both are numeric. This was working fine. Then I found out that for two MSAs, ACTUP should be 1, not 0. so I tried cvar$ACTUP[cvar$MSA == 6840] <- 1 cvar$ACTUP[cvar$MSA == 5360] <- 1 but when I try table(cvar$MSA, cvar$ACTUP) the level of ACTUP for those two MSAs has not changed, and is still

generic database access methods
I've been putting together a package that defined generic methods for database access. The packages is called "Rdbi." It borrows as much as possible from existing database packages / proposals. I'd like to start a discussion about the proposed interface. Here's what I've come up with so far: # # Rdbi: connectionMethods.R # dbConnect <- function(dbObj, ...)

R forum for only Statistics
Hi! I wish to know if there is any R forum which is meant only for Statistics? I mean where we can clarify our statistics doubts and seek knowledge. I know there are lot many books and internet sites, but 'R forum' has altogether different standard and very high level and one can learn a lot from them. correlation
What test do I use to determine if there is a correlation between a discrete variable and a continuous variable? For example - I have water quality ratings for streams (excellent, good, fair, poor) and a corresponding nitrogen concentration for each rating. I want to know if the the ratings correlate with the concentration of nitrogen in the stream. Help?

"Justify" PCA? -- was: Bartlett's Test of Sphericity
Apologies for the obvious, but just to clarify: there is no reason to "justify" a PCA -- it's just an eigen decomposition of a matrix and is therefore "justified" by linear algebra. If one wants to determine whether some subset of the eigenvectors = principal components suffice to "represent" the data in some sense, then that is where distributional

How to collect better estimations of a logistic model parameters, by using bootstrapping things ?
Dear all, I know that when using R, people should have a sufficient level in statistics. As well, I'm not a genius, when dealing with logistic regressions. I would like to construct ICs, IPs, for a logistic regression, but the point is I have just 41 observations. I had a look at the Design package and noticeably the lrm function, but I'm still not able to reduce the IC's, as I

Another NEWBIE
Hi, I'm a very fresh newbie to R. My first main question is, what the limitations of R are, what methods can R NOT do, esp. compared to (a) SPSS and (b) SAS? The second question is, how do you handle the data entry, data management and data manipulation in R, to me it seems to be really complicated and confusing?! Are there a kind of "helping tools"? The third question: are

Good working knowledge of a DBMS is almost invaluable when it comes to working with very large data sets. In addition, learning SQL is piece of cake compared to learning R. On top of that, knowledge of another (SQL)
