par() in .Rprofile
Dear all I installed new version (from binaries) and I noticed that par(bg="white") which I have in my .Rprofile causes error message on startup But if I issued this command immediately after startup everything worked as expected. I did not see any note in changes file or elsewhere. Should I specify white background in .Rprofile differently? Or is there some other recommended way

Default par() options
The following question/idea came up on the RKWard development mailing list, but might be of general interest: Is there a nice way to customize the default look of all graphs on all devices? I.e. a way to - for instance - set the following options before each plot: par(bg="light gray", las=2, pch=19) As far as I have found, there would currently be two ways to do this: 1) Adding the

How to annotate a graph with non-transparent math labels?
I do not know the precise language to describe the situation. But here it is what I want to do. I need to annotate a graph that contains two or more curves with labels that contain math symbols. The label must go on top of the curve. The problem is that when I annotate the plot, I can see the curve behind the label. Here it is an example using a simple straight line. x<-c(0,1)

Q: extracting data from lm
Warning: I am a complete newbie to R. I have read ISwR, but I am still finding myself completely stuck on some simple concepts. I have tried everything I can think of to solve this one, and finally decided that enough was enough and I need a pointer to a solution. I have the following summary from lm(): ---- > summary(lm(nu1~nu4)) Call: lm(formula = nu1 ~ nu4) Residuals: Min 1Q

ISwR library
I am learning to use R using a book that uses examples from the ISwR library so I need to have that library. When I type library (ISwR), R says: Error in library(ISwR) : there is no package called 'ISwR' Do I need to install ISwR separately? How do I do this? Thanks! -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/ISwR-library-tf3548959.html#a9907582 Sent from the R help mailing

Q: obtaining non-transparent background in png
I am not understanding something about generating PNG plots. I have tried several ways to obtain something other than a transparent background, but nothing I've done seems to change the background. For example: dev.print(png, width=800, height=600, bg='red', filename='example.png') which I thought would give a red background, simply gives the same transparent background I

R newbie configuration
I think I did enough reading on my Own about startup ( part of the morning And most of this afternoon ) to not feel uncomfortable asking for confirmation of my understanding of this startup stuff. Obviously, the startup process is more complicated Than below but, for my R newbie purposes, It seems like I can think of the startup process as follows : Suppose my home directory =

loadhistory() in .Rprofile ?
dear wizards: my .Rprofile has just one command for testing, loadhistory("~/.Rhistory") but this gives me an error on R startup: Error: couldn't find function "loadhistory" Invoking loadhistory() as the first interactive command works fine; incidentally, I believe loadhistory() in the .Rprofile worked in earlier or other platform R releases, too. Is the .Rprofile

.First and .Rprofile won't run on startup
I'm trying to source a file automatically every time I start R. I tried adding the following .First function in a file Rprofile.site in my $R_HOME/etc/ directory (verified $R_HOME by Sys.getenv()) as well as in a file .Rprofile in my $HOME directory and .Rprofile in the working directory: .First <- function(){ source(file.path(Sys.getenv("HOME"), "R",

resetting par() to all defaults: par(reset=TRUE) ?
In a long session, producing multiple graphs, I sometimes repeatedly change par() settings, particularly with multi-row/col displays. If I'm using a script, I'll do op <- par(newsettings) ... plots ... par(op) but sometimes I do things on the fly and can't easily back out to the default settings. I'm looking for someway to do the equivalent of par(reset=TRUE) I suppose I

changing names of vectors in list or data.frame
When I combine separate vectors into one list, there are new names created. I'd like to change them to something more meaningful. Here are two examples using data(zelazo) from library(ISwR): > library(ISwR) > data(zelazo) > attach(zelazo) > zelazo $active [1] 9.00 9.50 9.75 10.00 13.00 9.50 $passive [1] 11.00 10.00 10.00 11.75 10.50 15.00 $none [1] 11.50 12.00 9.00

par() defaults in Rprofile
Dear List, I've tried to set default par() in .Rprofile by putting the following in the .First function: setHook(packageEvent("graphics", "onLoad"), function(...) {graphics::par(cex.axis=1.5, cex.lab=2, las=1)} ) My goal was to set par() defaults without opening a device everytime at startup. However, the next plot I create doesn't show these

Matrix/Table col headings R 2.0.0
I have been looking at some 'table' examples in Peter Dalgaard's ISwR book, and I am confused by how to get right justification of my table headings when I use the tables() command. Compare the following: # Produces right justfified column names caff.marital=matrix(c(652,1537,598,242,36,46,38,21,218,327,106,67),nrow=3,byrow=T)

Stat textbook recommendations?
Hello, I'm looking for a textbook that can explain some of the math behind the intro-to-intermediate stuff like ANOVA, multiple regression, non- parametric tests, etc. A little background: I took an intro stats course last year and would like to further my education. Being as that was the highest (and only) stats class the local community college offers, it looks like I'm on

.First() in R 1.9.0
Dear R experts, I just upgraded R from 1.8.1 to 1.9.0 version. My .First() function in ~/.Rprofile contains x11() and par() functions. .First <- function() { x11(display = "", 8.0, 5.0) par(las = 1, ...) ## ... } And, R claims now, on startup: [hello messages skiped ...] Error in .First() : couldn't find function "x11" > I commented

.Rprofile files (was R newbie configuration)
Thanks a lot. setHook is Currently not in my knowledge set But it's great to save these Thing so I can look them up When I feel more comfortable. Just to add to that Stata versus R discussion : I believe, anyone who uses any other package than R, is probably missing out in the long run. It's truly unbelievable what has been done here. I feel like I fell asleep for 5 years ( by not using
