installing packages and windows vista
I installed R (R-2.4.1-win32.exe) on a new computer with Windows Vista
and a 64 bit operating system (hp dv9000 with intel core t7200). The
base R runs fine, but I can not get any of the packages to load. From
within R I choose install packages choose a site then a package. I
tried installing 2 packages and get similar errors (see below), I just
copied and pasted lines from R.

Problem when trying to install packages
Dear Rui;
Many thanks for your reply. I have installed Rtools (rtools43-5958-5975) on
my PC and I have R version 4.3.3 and 4.3.2 to install. Also I have
installed Rstudio through Anaconda Navigator.
But I do not know how to use Rtools for installing the R packages. I would
be more than happy if you help me.
Sincerely yours

Problem when trying to install packages
Though Navigator may mess up any Rtools stuff because it handles the
directory trees where packages and dependencies are located, does it not?
If so, maybe just reinstall RStudio directly from its website to proceed.
Just a guess obviously.

Problem when trying to install packages
Dear all;
I found a useful video on youtube that has explained how to install Rtools.
I followed the instructions and the problem was solved.

#RTools #RStudio #DataScience) - YouTube

R_SHARE_DIR not defined for use in tests/Makefile running under Windows
The make variable $(R_SHARE_DIR) seems to be available for use in
tests/Makefile when running under Linux, but not Windows (R-2.6.2, R-2.6.1,
R-2.7.0 alpha 2008-04-06, under Windows XP 64 bit, built locally for 32 bit).
Is this intentional, or an oversight? Is it OK to use $(R_HOME)/share
instead (seems to work OK)?
I notice the following in /src/gnuwin32/front-ends/rcmdfn.c (from R-alpha

map() and pdf clipping
Hello,
Below is a function (test.map) that permits drawing the same map using
three different devices. The "pdf" device doesn't clip polygons to
the plot region as I see it does by both the native device (in my case
"Quartz") and the "png" device.
test.map("pdf") # produces "test-map.pdf" with no clipping
test.map("png") #

Windows 7 issues with installing packages and setting library paths
Dear all,
I am forced to work in an environment without administrator rights.
When using R2.13.1 on Windows 7 (64-Bit), I found that I can?t install or update any packages due to missing writing permissions.
I managed to get full access to a directory on my C:\ drive now - but how do I specify that all libraries shall be installed into this directory?
In Rcmd_environ I have the following

Question on trying to build R 2.11.1 on Tru64(aka OSF1)
First I tried 'setenv R_SHELL /usr/local/bin/bash', as bash is the weapon
of choice for the faculty wishing to use R, then ran ./configure as before.
The ./configure output line
using as R_SHELL for scripts ... /usr/local/bin/bash
would seem to indicate that the R_SHELL environment variable was recognized
and acknowledged. However, I got the same build error:

local source packages install from within R session - cross-platform
I realize that others have struggled with this issue...i.e.
http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/~rking/R/help/05/01/9826.html
i am on os.x 10.4 w/ R2.2, and am (perhaps foolishly) also on this quest...
i would like to be able to install downloaded source (tar.gz'd) files from
within an R session, and have it work in a X-platform way..i am often not

Map using projection
Hi list,
I have a real problem with plotting US state map. When I try to plot the
northern state, there will be some blank space in the top of graph (see case
1 example), and when I plot southern states, there will be a blank space in
the bottom of plot (see case 2). I spent almost 2 days to figure out a
solution, but could not. Would you help me if you know what the problem is?

segfault with readDCF on R 3.1.2 on AIX 6.1 when using install.packages
Hi,
Note that one significant change to read.dcf() that happened since R
3.0.2 is the addition of support for arbitrary long lines (commit
63281), which never worked:
dcf <- paste(c("aa: ", rep(letters, length.out=10000)), collapse="")
writeLines(dcf, "test.dcf")
nchar(read.dcf("test.dcf"))

The Environment variables settings in bin/R, why do they ignore environment variables of the same name?
Hello,
In installation/R/bin/R i notice
1. R_HOME_DIR is hard coded e.g.
R_HOME_DIR=/usr/local/lib64/R
2. It ignores R_HOME_DIR
echo "WARNING: ignoring environment value of R_HOME"
3. R_SHARE_DIR, R_INCLUDE_DIR and R_DOC_DIR are also hard coded.
Is there a reason why these settings do not read the values from the
environment variables of the same name (assuming they exist) and
