error : unused argument(s) when boxplot
Dear all,
I am a total beginner in R, so sorry if this is the wrong place. I am using R 2.10.1 on a Mac (Mac OS 10.6.2).
I have this small dataset :
growth sugar
75 C
72 C
73 C
61 F
67 F
64 F
62 S
63 S
I have no problem reading the table, or getting the summary, but if I try boxplot(growth~sugar, ylab="growth", xlab="sugar", data=Dataset), I have the following error :

basic boxplot questions
dear R experts:
I am playing with boxplots for the first time. most of it is
intuitive, although there was less info on the web than I had hoped.
alas, for some odd reason, my R boxplots have some fat black dots, not
just the hollow outlier plots. Is there a description of when R draws
hollow vs. fat dots somewhere?
[and what is the parameter to change just the size of these dots?]
Also, let

mild and extreme outliers in boxplot
dear all,
could somebody tell me how I can plot mild outliers as a circle(?) and
extreme outliers as an asterisk(*) in a box-whisker plot?
Thanks very much in advance

Boxplot: quartiles/outliers
For boxplot(), is it possible to pass in a parameter to change the default
way that the 1st and 3rd quartiles are computed? (specifically, I'd like to
use type 6 described in the quantile function).
Also, what are the options for how outliers are computed, and how can one
change them?
Thank you

Unexpected behavior in boxplot
When plotting using the cex.axis argument to boxplot(), the size of the
plotting symbols beyond the whiskers of the boxplot are being changes.
Example:
par(mfrow=c(2,1))
boxplot(c(rnorm(10), 10), horizontal=TRUE, main="Test", las=2, cex.axis=2)
boxplot(c(rnorm(10), 10), horizontal=TRUE, main="Test", las=2, cex.axis=1)

boxplot - label outliers
Hi All-
I have 24 boxplots on one graph. I do not have the whiskers extending
to the outliers, but I would like to label the maximum value of each
outlier above the whiskers. I have the stats but am having trouble
figuring out how to label the whiskers.
Any suggestions would be great!

boxplot - code for labeling outliers - any suggestions for improvements?
Hello all,
I wrote a small function to add labels for outliers in a boxplot.
This function will only work on a simple boxplot/formula command (e.g:
something like boxplot(y~x)).
Code + example follows in this e-mail.
I'd be happy for any suggestions on how to improve this code, for example:
- Handle boxplot.matrix (which shouldn't be too hard to do)
- Handle cases of complex

labels outliers in boxplot
Dear R-users,
Following is part of my data, where slide has 36
levels and block 48 levels. I have done boxplot for
each slide on the same graph. There are outliers for
each slide and I tried to use indentify functtion to
identify outliers in such a way that when I click on
an outlier or point, the points will be labelled by
either their block or ID or by both but without
success. How can I make

Label outliers in boxplot
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm a beginner and I didn't find help in manuals, archives, or web
I have a z matrix of this type:

how to change the thickness of the lines of the boxplot outliers
Hi,
I tried to use boxplot function. I am following the ?boxplot and can
change the whisker box width using lwd parameter. However, when
outline=TRUE, the thickness of the circle of the outliers is not
proportionally changed when I change the line width of the whisker
box. There must be another parameter for that. Unfortunately I don't
know.
please help and thanks much in advance.

boxplot with average instead of median
I really like the ease of use with the boxplot command in R. I would
rather have a boxplot that shows the average value and the standard
deviation then the median value and the quartiles.
Is there a way to do this?

label outliers in boxplot and/or bwplot
Hi
Is there a way to lable (e.g. observation-number) the outliers in a boxplot?
and in a bwplot?
thanks a lot
Christoph
P.S. identify() is not available with bwplot, is it?

accessing the indices of outliers in a data frame boxplot
I have a data frame containing columns which are factors. I use this
to make boxplots for the data, with one box per factor. I would now
like to get at the data in the data frame which corresponds to the
outliers. I have so far found the $out, which gives "the values of any
data points which lie beyond the extremes of the whiskers", but I
haven't found anything which will let me get

Boxplot in R
I am trying to draw a plot like Matlab does:
The upper extreme whisker represents 95% of the data;
The upper hinge represents 75% of the data;
The median represents 50% of the data;
The lower hinge represents 25% of the data;
The lower extreme whisker represents 5% of the data.
It looks like:
--- 95%

------- 75%

|-----| 50%

about the whisker in boxplot
Hi, Dear R-users,
I have a problem when I drawing a boxplot. I want to extend the whisker to
the 5% and the 95% quantiles and only show the most extreme outlier, like
0.01% and 99.99% percentiles. What should I do?
I saw something on boxplot.stat, but even I define the parameter in
boxplot.stat, what I should do next? how to connect it to boxplot?
Thank you very much!

Boxplot 5% and 95% quantile instead of 25% and 75%
Hi,
I'm new to the whole R-thing as a replacement for Matlab, not disappointed sofar ;)
I found out how to make nice looking boxplots, but i also would like the make a boxplot with 5% and 95% instead of the standard 25 and 75% quantiles.
My csv input looks something like:
LOCATION FILTER NR DATE VALUE MONTH
Peelhorst01 1 14-Jan-94 23.07 1
Peelhorst01 1 28-Jan-94 23.68 1
Peelhorst01 1

boxplot with log="y" and values starting at 0
Hi,
I'm working with a data.frame containing values between 0 and 22000.
Most of the values are actually between 0 and 50 and the high ones are
outliers.
I want to generate a boxplot and since the outliers are extremely
high, I need to scale the y scale logarithmically. Otherwise one
wouldn't really see the boxes of the boxplot.

eval(), expression()
Dear R-Users!
My aim is to produce boxplots without the outliers included in the
plot. I started to write a function that looks something like:
myboxplot <-function(x,fa) {
bpdata <- boxplot(x~fa,plot=FALSE)
bpnames <- names(bpdata)
for (JJ in bpnames) {
command <- paste("bpdata$",JJ,"$out <- numeric(0)",sep="");
eval(command)

Boxplot graphic
Dear R-users!
I boxplotted some data. the class of the data is numeric. There are some
outliers and I would like to see their names in the graphic. So, instead
that the data points of the outliers are plotted as points, I would like to
have their names plotted.
First of, how can I give my data series (class numeric) names? Second, how
could I adjust the boxplot to see the names of the outliers
