any advice on web interfaces to R?
I saw http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#R-Web-Interfaces and I'm still not sure yet which platform (Linux, Windows, etc.) I'll be working on -- and no, it's not under my control to pick. I was wondering if anyone out there had good advice, that would save me time and stomach acid, on how to set up a web browser to send a list of commands to an R and put the resulting table

predict.gls choking on levels of factor
I've got a gls formula that's a mix of continuous and ordered variables. I wanted to use gls because I wanted to use the varIdent structure. Anyway, attempts to use "predict.gls" choke with the error that the levels I use are not allowed for one of them -- the first one alphabetically, so I'd guess the second would have the same problem. So I have three linked questions --

Sample size calculation for differences between two very small proportions (Fisher's exact test or others)?
Hi, I'm try to compute the minimum sample size needed to have at least an 80% of power, with alpha=0.05. The problem is that empirical proportions are really small: 0.00154 in one case and 0.00234. These are the estimated failure proportion of two medical treatments. Thomas and Conlon (1992) suggested Fisher's exact test and proposed a computational method, which according to their table

Off-topic: Biostatistics book spam?
Just got what seems to be the first spam for a stats book I ever saw. It only has one review at amazon, and for all I know the author wrote it himself. This might be a decent text, but if so, I'd like to hear it from someone here. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Biostatistics Books <biostatbooks at hotmail.com> Date: Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 11:19 AM Subject: Is this the

Off-topic -- an eye on a stats presentation for clinicians?
I've got a 20 slide Powerpoint set up against the expected day someone says "Mitch, could you talk for a short while to the residents on how to use statistics?" It looks good at this end, but I'd love to get at least one more pair of eyes on it. Any volunteers? -- Due to the recession, requests for instant gratification will be deferred until arrears in scheduled

Help wit matrices
Hello all, I am working with a 1000x1000 matrix, and I would like to return a 1000x1000 matrix that tells me which value in the matrix is greater than a theshold value (1 or 0 indicator). i have tried mat2<-as.matrix(as.numeric(mat1>0.25)) but that returns a 1:100000 matrix. I have also tried for loops, but they are grossly inefficient. THanks for all your help in advance. Lanre

I am trying to make a box plot and overlay it with a scatter plot from another data.frame. I was able to successfully create the boxplot, but when i tried using points(x~y...) the dots did not show up. example code aa<-(300,300,300,300,600,600,600,600,900,900,900,900) bb<-(13,12,14,11,56,44,34,75,22.,34,22,98,59,55,56) cc<-(13,12,14,11,56,44,34,75,22.,34,22,98,59,55,56)

Experiences with CentOS & MacBook Pro?
Ok, I'm finally of a mindset to replace my now tired, aging Dell Inspiron 600m. I'm currently running Fedora Core on it, and am fairly happy with the software. Has anybody used CentOS on a Macbook Pro? What gotchas are there? (The first that comes to mind is the lack of a right mousebutton) Scouting on the Internet, I've seen that some people have trouble getting sound to work.

CentOS 5 Beta on a MacBook Pro
FYI, I just installed CentOS 5 beta with the SMP kernel in a VMWare fusion virtual machine on my 2.33 GHz 15 inch MacBook Pro. The installation was flawless. I installed from an NFS share on my network with the ISO images. The vm booted disc one and recognized my 802.11n wireless connection as eth0. The install took about 30 minutes. Everything worked fine... -Joe

Syslinux on MacBook Pro?
Hi, Did anybody have success with running Syslinux on a MacBook Pro? I didn't manage, but I admittedly have no idea about UEFI. I've also heard that these machines deviate from the UEFI spec in some way... -- Thanks, Feri

Centos 8 on Macbook
Folks I am trying to install Centos 8.1 on a MacBook Pro. I have a bootable USB stick with centos-8.1-boot (which I think is the equivalent of a netinstall), and it boots. However, when I select the storage option, and choose to make more space on the SSD, go through the confirming dialogs, the installer complains that it was unable to save the information to the disk. How to set up R for Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo
I just recently purchased a Macbook Pro, Intel Core Duo 2GHz, 512 MB RAM. After looking through several articles in this forum I found the link to the R Mac Wiki. I am not that tech-savy but it appeared to me that this link, http://wiki.urbanek.info/index.cgi?IntelMacR describes how to install R on a Intel Mac Core Duo to utilise the two cores. I have also downloaded and installed the

Trying to get IE onto my MacBook
MacBook OS X 10.4.11 - Sorry, I'm pretty much one of the peasants when it comes to some of this; need to use Internet Explorer and Excel (required for work) on my MacBook; have been trying to learn how to do this -- short of keeping Mr. Gates wealthy; my understanding (correct?incorrect?) is that one way to manage this is to load Wine onto the Mac, and then I can load in the two MS programs.
