Problems installing lme4 on Ubuntu
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

While I'm not an R expert, I have used R on Windows XP. Now I've moved
to Ubuntu (Intrepid), and I'm trying to configure R to work with the
Gelman and Hill _Data Analysis Using Regression and
Multilevel/Hierarchical Models_. So far, it's not working.
I start by following the instructions for installing arm and BRugs at

R Books listing on R-Project
I was wondering what the criteria were for including books on the Books
Related to R page <http://www.r-project.org/doc/bib/R-books.html>. (There is
no maintainer listed on this page.)
In particular, I was wondering why the following two books are not listed:
* Andrew Gelman, Jennifer Hill, *Data Analysis Using Regression and
Multilevel/Hierarchical Models*. (CRAN package 'arm')

multi-level modeling & R?
A colleague was asking me if R does multi-level
modelling as opposed to multiple regression. Since I
have no knowledge of multi-level modelling (except 5
minutes googling ) I thought that I would as here.
Does are offer any multi-level modeling packages? It
looked like arm might be one but I was not sure.
Thanks

[OT] good reference for mixed models and EM algorithm
Dear R People:
Sorry for the off-topic. Could someone recommend a good reference for
using the EM algorithm on mixed models, please?
I've been looking and there are so many of them. Perhaps someone here
can narrow things down a bit.
Thanks in advance,
Sincerely,
Erin

HELP FOR BUGS
Hi Sir
I am very new user of R for the research project on multilevel logistic regression.
There is confusion about bugs() function in R and BUGS software. Is there any relation between these two? Is there any comprehensive package for Multilevel Logistic modelling in R?
Please guide in this regard.
Thank You

Book recommendations: Multilevel & longitudinal analysis
Hi, does anyone out there have a recommendation for multilevel / random
effects and longitudinal analysis?
My dream book would be something that's both accessible to a
non-statistician but rigorous (because I seem to be slowly turning into a
statistician) and ideally would use R.

WinBUGS with R
Dear UseRs,
I am having some problems using R with WinBUGS using the R2WinBUGS

Need an advise for bayesian estimate
Hi R bayesians,
I need an advise how to resolve the two different estimates applying a
traditional glm (TG) and a bayes glm (BG), and different results depending
on the data formats of response data and the prior specs using bayesglm in
R. I'm not familiar with bayes estimate and my colleague asked me to look
into this because the EPA from France reported a quite different estimates

How to create MULTILEVELS in a dataset??
Dear R users
I have a data set which has five variables. One depenedent variable y, and 4
Independent variables (education-level, householdincome, countrygdp and
countrygdpsquare). The first two are data corresponding to the individual
and the next two coorespond to the country to which the individual belongs
to. My data set does not make this distinction between individual level and

HLM-like analysis in R
Greetings-
I have some data on which I need to do something like a Hierarchical
Linear Model (please bear with me, I'm only learning the technique so I
don't know yet if my language is correct). Essentially I'm analyzing data
at two levels simultaneously; data are about individuals an organizations
of which they are members.
Can someone point me toward an appropriate package in R?

prediction intervals from a mixed-effects models?
How can I get prediction intervals from a mixed-effects model?
Consider the following example:
library(nlme)
fm3 <- lme(distance ~ age*Sex, data = Orthodont, random = ~ 1)
df3.1 <- with(Orthodont, data.frame(age=seq(5, 20, 5),
Subject=rep(Subject[1], 4),
Sex=rep(Sex[1], 4)))
predict(fm3, df3.1, interval='prediction')

intercept value in lme
Dear all,
I've got a problem in fitting multilevel model in lme. I don't know to
much about that but suspect that something is wrong with my model.
I'm trying to fit:
m1<-lme(X~Y,~1|group,data=data,na.action=na.exclude,method="ML")
m2<-lme(X~Y+Z,~1|group,data=data,na.action=na.exclude,method="ML")

hierarchical mixed model
I would like to fit a 2-level mixed model:
yit=a+a[i]+a[it] +(b+b[i]+b[it])*xit+eps[it]
However, the variance of the second level components should depend on the group, i.e. sigma for a[it] and b[it] should be [i] specific.
I do not know whether this is conceptually right in the mixed model context...
In case it stands, how should the formula look like?
Also, the data are unbalanced with

{nlme} Multilevel estimation heteroscedasticity
Dear All,
I'm trying to model heteroscedasticity using a multilevel model. To
do so, I make use of the nlme package and the weigths-parameter.
Let's say that I hypothesize that the exam score of students
(normexam) is influenced by their score on a standardized LR test
(standLRT). Students are of course nested in "schools". These
variables are contained in the

Bayesian data analysis recommendations
Dear all,
I am trying to learn Bayesian inference and Bayesian data analysis, I
am new in the field. Would any experts on the list recommend any good
sites or materials for beginners?
My approach is to learn and understand the theory first, then program
on my own using R, though I see there are already packages.
appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

plot.design()
Greetings-
I'm working through Pinheiro and Bates' _Mixed Effects Models in S and
S-Plus_ using R (1.3.1 for linux). On page 13 (okay, so I haven't got that
far :)) is:
plot.design( ergoStool)
which returns on my system:

Error: couldn't find function "plot.design"
any ideas?
Thanks.

Multiple imputation, multinomial response & random effects
Dear R-group,
Could somebody recommend a package that can deal with a multinomial response variable (choice of breeding tactic in mice, which has four unordered levels), multiply-imputed data (generated using the Amelia package) and two non-nested random effects: individual identity (133 individuals made up to four choices each) and year (for which there are six levels and sample size varies
