outline polygons of point clumps
Dear all,
How to generate one outline polygon for each point clump? Are there
any present functions in ArcView, ArcGIS, R or some freewares? I just
had a quick look at the package adehabitat and did not find the
function.
To my knowledge, I could do it as follows: 1) make a grid map of my
study area with cell values = 0; 2) assign 1 to the cells containing
at least one point; 3) convert the

writing polygons/segments to shapefiles (.shp) or other A rcGIS compatible file
The main limitation of the shapefiles package that I put together is that it
does not create shapefiles from R objects - rather it only writes shapefiles
that have been read into R and manipulated within the constraints of the
existing file structure. By this I mean that for example you can change the
coordinates of points and write them back out. Or you can add a bunch of
blank columns in the

help for linear-circular correlation
Hi R-profs,
Maybe my question is a little off topic. Could any one tell me how to
calculate a linear-circular correlation coefficient and its p-values?
I had a quick look at circular and CircStats packages and did not find
the related function.
Thanks for any kindly help.

How to plot circular data in the directions of 0, 0.5pi, pi and 1.5pi
Hi R users,
I use plot.circular(rad, stack=T,bins=4) and could just obtain the four
stacks in the directions of 45, 135, 225 and 315 degrees. But I want them in
0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees. Is there any parameter or any other function to
make it? Thanks for helping a R beginner.

help for cell2nb and queencell in spdep package
Dear Dr. Bivand and R-users,
I have a 5 by 5 grid, say, location[1:5,1:5], and I want to know the
indices of 8 neighbours of each cell. For example, for location[2,2], its
neighbour coordinates are [1,1:3], [2,1], [2,3] and [3,1:3]. Sometimes I
also need to remove edge effects (torus = TRUE).
I have tried "cell2nb" function in your spdep package. Here's my example:

How to sample x-y coordinates from GIS files
Hi Gurus!
I have a job that is to get randomly samples from point-based GIS data (sp
called shape GIS files) under the total sum resctricted.
For example, I would like to take random smaples under the 1000 persons in
each city.
The randomly sampled persons should not be over 1000 any case.
Thank you in advance,

Ways to speed up R code?
Hi R-users:
Yesterday I ran a R code for 9 hours and it did not show any sign to
stop. Then I interrupted it and found it had completed 82.5%.
This morning I decided to wait for another 11 hours to see what will
happen. Wait a minute, I heard that transforming data.frame to matrix
will make R code faster. Then I made the modification in my R code.
Oooh, the new code finished within 30 minutes!!

ESRI shapefiles and EMME/2 packages
I just uploaded two packages to CRAN.
shapefiles_0.1.tar.gz - functions to read and write ESRI shapefiles
(including dbfs)
emme2_0.1.tar.gz - functions to read binary data from an EMME/2 databank
data (EMME/2 is a transportation modeling program)
Please let me know if you find any bugs or have some suggestions. Thanks.

SOLVED was Re: Any ESRI users? Upgrade 3.0.14 to 3.0.21a broke Arcmap layer loading?
Did not hear from anyone on this, so maybe we are the only ESRI users who
got bit, but this turned out to be an issue with oplocks. Disabling oplocks
on the server eliminated the problem.

ESRI Shapefile for EU-25
Hi all,
who knows how to get an ESRI Shapefile for the NUTS-2 Regions of the
enlarged European Union? Particularly I want to draw maps of Germany,
Poland, Czech Republik, Hungary and Austria. I've found Shapefiles for the
US, Russia and other countries elsewhere in the web, but for Europe it
seems really difficult.
With many thanks for any hint

read ESRI file geodatabase feature classes
Hello-
Does anyone know if R can read in ESRI file geodatabase feature
classes, directly from the file geodatabase? I currently have to
export the data out of Arc, to a csv file, then read the csv file. I'd
like to bypass this step and read directly from the file geodatabase.
Thanks for your help.

is there a package in R that would allow map drawing:

rivers etc?

Reading in .aux (ESRI raster files) into R

question for IF ELSE usage
Hi R users,
Maybe the question is too simple.
In a IF ... ELSE ... statement "if(cond) cons.expr else alt.expr", IF and
ELSE should be at the same line?
For example,
if (x1==12)
{
y1 <- 5
}else
{
y1 <- 3
}
is right, while
if (x1==12)
{
y1 <- 5
}
else # Error: syntax error
{
y1 <- 3
}
is wrong?
Thanks

ESRI shape file import and time-space models
Dear R user,
I am running R under Windows 2000.
I am looking for a routine for importing
- shape files (ESRI) into R
- dbase files (FOXPRO) into R
and I am looking for time-space models for description and prediction of
Bernoulli-, Binomial- and Poissonvaraibles.
Thank's a lot for a reply.

Any ESRI users? Upgrade 3.0.14 to 3.0.21a broke Arcmap layer loading?
We just upgraded our samba server from 3.0.14 to 3.0.21a and have discovered
a subtle but very painful problem.
Users of ESRI ArcMap (on fully patched Windows XP clients) are unable to
read complex layered file data.
Arcmap works fine with 3.0.14, it works fine with the data on a windows
share, and it works fine when I set up a server to run the version of samba
shipping with Solaris 9 (3.0.2! ).

RGDAL OGRwrite question
I have a quick question: It appears that in rgdal v0.7-12 (R version
2.15.1, OSX 10.6.8) writeOGR will not write a shapefile the the
current directory. Is this correct? An earlier version of rgdal must
have allowed this because I have a older script that used to work, but
doesn't now.
So, as an example, here is what I get today:

How to generate for one vector matrix
Is there any routine to generate for one vector matrix.
If I have X I want to generate start from zero to maximum value each vector.
For example, I have a vector x = (4,2,3,1,4)
I want to generate n=6 times, for 4, start 0 to 4, then 2 start 0 to 2, ect.
The result something like this:
generate(x,n=6)
1,1,2,1,4
1,2,3,0,3
4,0,1,1,1
3,1,0,1,4
0,0,3,0,0
4,1,3,0,4
Could anyone help me. Thanks.
