Computing very large distance matrix
Hello All,
I have a 131072x132 matrix for which I need to compute a regular euclidean distance matrix, which I then need to transform and run agnes() on this transformed matrix. I am having trouble computing the distance matrix as it is fairly large and I am sure I have gone over the max.
The specific error I am getting is:
Error in vector("double", length) : negative length vectors

GSOC 2016 project on Ranking
Hello Sir,
I am a third-year student at the Department of mathematics at IIT
Kharagpur. I have good experience in Information Retrieval and Machine
Learning. I have read many chapters of the book Introduction to Information
Retrieval. Recently I am doing a project on tagging a question on a Q&A
Forum using ranking the tags and probabilistic inference. I also have

Clustering with 'agnes'
Hello,
I had a question regarding clustering using the agnes() function from the 'cluster' package.
I was wondering if anyone knew how I can identify cluster points after running the agnes function.
For example, I created a dataset with points randomly scattered around (0,0), (0,1) and (1,0). After clustering, the dendrogram shows all the clustered points and I get the ordering and

Concatenating data frame
Hello, I have searched through the R-help archive and find that the easiest
way to concatenate data records in a dataframe is to use rbind()
I know we can do that using rbind, but it is slow when we are doing rbind
thousands of times to a growing list, each time adding one or two records to
the ever growing existing data because in
existingRecords<-rbind(existingRecords,

Using DBI and RMySQL
Dear All,
I am having a bit of problem using the DBI and RMySQL
package. I have already installed DBI but now I want
to connect to MySQL. So how do I do it. The CRAN
package repository does not have RMySQL windows binary
to install from?

Correlation Matrix
Listers,
I have a question regarding correlation matrices. It is fairly straight
forward to build a correlation matrix of an entire data frame. I simply use
the command cor(MyDataFrame). However, what I would like to do is construct
a smaller correlation matrix using just three of the variable out of my data
set.
When I run this:
cor(MyDataFrame$variable1,

problem with split eating giga-bytes of memory
I'm having trouble using split on a very large data-set with ~1400 levels of
the factor to be split. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it with the simple
self-contained example below. As you can see, splitting the artificial
dataframe of size ~13MB results in a split dataframe of ~ 144MB, with an
increase memory allocation of ~10 fold for the split object. If split scales
linearly, then my

Partial aggregate on sorted data
Hi All,
I'm looking for ways to compute aggregate statistics (with the aggregate
function) but with an option for sorting and selecting a subset of the data
frame. For example, I have would like to turn this :
aggregate(myDataframe$TargetValue,list(SomeFactor =
myDataframe$SomeFactor),mean)
into something like
aggregate(myDataframe$TargetValue,list(SomeFactor =

Can't convert list to matrix properly
Hi guys, here is a list of names that I have:
MyList:
> myList<-list("A", "B","C","D")
> myList
[[1]]
[1] "A"
[[2]]
[1] "B"
[[3]]
[1] "C"
[[4]]
[1] "D"
I want to turn this list into a matrix of 1 row and 4 columns with those
four components (A, B, C, D) so here is what I do:

[PATCH 0/4] efi: PE header generation fix
The PE headers of the generated efi file were quite buggy. And since OVMF
perform a few consistency checks, syslinux was unable to run on it. I don't
pretend to have a thorough understanding of the PE+ headers, some bugs may
remain. :)

problem with using apply for dataframe
Dear people,
I am including an example of a dataframe:
mydataframe<-data.frame(X=c(1:4),total_bill=c(16.99,10.34,21.01,23.68),tip=c(1.01,1.66,3.50,3.31),sex=c("Male","Male","Male","Female"))
When I use the sapply function getting the information about the factors
works:
sapply(mydataframe,function(x)is.factor(x))
X total_bill tip

understanding behavior of "merge"
I'm trying to bootstrap resample from a repeated measures dataset. I sample
a vector of "ID"'s from my dataframe with replacement.
Then I merge this back with my dataframe.
I'm re-sampling subjects in the dataset rather than rows of the data.
I thought I could use the left/right join features of the merge to select
the records I want from the dataframe (mydataframe), like

Difference between two-way ANOVA and (two-way) ANCOVA
Hi!
as my subject says I am struggling with the different of a two-way ANOVA and
a (two-way) ANCOVA.
I found the following examples from this webpage:
http://www.statmethods.net/stats/anova.html
# One Way Anova (Completely Randomized Design)
fit <- aov(y ~ A, data=mydataframe)
# Randomized Block Design (B is the blocking factor)
fit <- aov(y ~ A + B, data=mydataframe)

subset on data frame
I have a data frame. And I'd like to subset according to rownames.
subset(mydataframe, rownames(mydataframe) == myrow, select = mycols)
it turned out that "myrow" cannot be a vector. But I have multiple rows to
pick. Is there a way to get around this problem??
Thank you for your help!!

R more Unix-like?
Is there a way to stream data into R so that it can be used in a
command pipe?
Most Unix commands read data via standard input and read the script
from the command line. For example:
$ seq 1 10 | sed -e 's/^/foo /'
$ seq 1 10 | awk '{print "foo " $1}'
$ seq 1 10 | perl -lane 'print "foo $F[0]"'
In contrast, R seems to read the script

Memory limitation in GeoR - Windows or R?
Dear Aaron,
I am really a tool user and not a tool maker (actually an ecologist
doing some biostatistics)... so, I take the liberty of sending a copy of
this e-mail to the r-help list where capable computer persons and true
statisticians may provide more relevant information and also to Paulo
Ribeiro and Peter Diggle, the authors of geoR..
I really feel that your huge matrix cannot be

Sweave: centering with echo=TRUE
In a .Rnw file I want to insert the R command

1. the command itseld is echoed into the tex document generated by Sweave
<<fig=TRUE,echo=TRUE>>=
2. The graphics generated appears in the tex document, with the graphics
centred.
3. The R command > pairs(mydataframe) is not centered.

text plots?
Is there a way to do text plots in R?
I'd like to do some simple XY plots in R with the output in text
(ascii). For example, with gnuplot I can do the following:
echo 'set terminal dumb ; plot sin(x)' | gnuplot
To generate a simple sin wave. Since I connect to a remote Linux
machine using SSH, being able to generate a rough idea of what a plot
will look like in text would be
