installing R on Fedora Core 2 test 2
Just a report for those who want to try this. (Executive
summary: It eventually worked.)
The RPM for Fedora Core 1 did not work because it wanted
libtcl8.3.so and libtk8.3.so, while this distribution had 8.4
instead of 8.3. I didn't try making soft links, thus pretending
that it had 8.3. (I'm planning to install the final version of
Core 2 when it comes out soon. This is a computer I

ESS with Xemacs? [vs. Emacs, slightly off topic]
I decided to try out Xemacs instead of Emacs in Linux (RH 7.2).
After doing lots of configuration of Xemacs, I finally discovered
a major problem.
With Emacs, when I use R, I start Emacs twice (at least), in
different viewports, once as
emacs -f R
and once as
emacs myfile.R
Then I try commands in the first one, and, when they work (which
isn't very often), I cut the command with C-w,

request to make --enable-prebuilt-html the default build on linux
I don't understand the advantages of generating html help dynamically,
but I have found some clear disadvantages.
One is that I can no longer use a bookmark in my browser to access the
list of packages and go from there to individual help pages.
The other is that, if I try to use ESS instead (using
options(help_type="html") in .Rprofile) - it is a mess. ESS splits
the emacs frame

A hint to start ESS-xemacs
I'm trying to use ESS & xemacs under debian linux testing and KDE.
My problem is that I didn't find any document in the internet explaining a
**step by step** session with R and xemacs.
The (wrong) procedure I follow (to no avail!) is:
1) I start R in a terminal window;
2) I start xemacs and open a file with the extension .R (test.R);
3) I issue M-x R RET and I can see an Rd new

XEmacs vs. GNU Emacs?
As a user of only R, I don't use much of the potential of ESS and Emacs.
Without entering a religious feud, is there any reason I should use XEmacs
rather than my current GNU Emacs?
(I looked on the XEmacs site, but I didn't understand the programming
issues they were talking about (over my head).)

Fwd: Re: RSiteSearch, sos, rdocumentation.org, ...?
Don't do anything yet. I may have found the problem by accident.
I tried to use the computer from something else, and it was being
drastically slowed down by some leftover processes, which turned out
to be xlhtml. That is something that converts Excel files. Apparently,
some excel files got into the libraries, and they were causing the
indexing to hang completely.
I am now running everything

import SYSTAT .syd file?
Does anyone know how to read a SYSTAT .syd file on Linux?
(Splus 6 does it, but it is easier to find a Windows box
with Systat than to download their demo. I'm wondering
if there is a better way than either of these options.)

ess in Windows (newbie Q)
I'm a rank beginner with R, and I'm stumped at how to get it to work
with Xemacs under Windows XP. I'm afraid there are some VERY basic
questions I have here. Yes, I did read
http://ess.r-project.org/Manual/readme.html.
Both R and Xemacs are installed and working. The current ess files are
installed in a subdirectory of my Xemacs directory. I added the R bin
directory to my

Sweave and Xemacs on Windows2000?
Hallo!
Trying to configure Xemacs to work with .snw files on windows 2000. Tried to do it how it is described in the FAQ for Sweaves.
When starting xemacs with and Snw file
*ESS* buffer contains hundrets of lines and the few last ones.

PLEASE IGNORE PREVIOUS: How to configure ess-5.2.0beta3-1.i586.rpm, Xemacs and SuSE 9.0?
Please ignore (and excuse) my previous message - it is incomplete.
I'm trying to get R and ESS to work with Xemacs on a newly installed
SuSE 9.0 system. Is some setup required beyond installing the rpms?
I've installed the Xemacs packages from SuSE

modifying INSTALL to make html but not build package
For my R page at http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu/ (also the target of
RSiteSearch()), I'm trying to find a way to get the html versions of
the help pages without actually installing packages. This will allow
me to include packages that don't install. And it will also vastly
speed up the monthly update, and make it easier to replicate
everything in case of disaster.
I have made a modified

ESS 5.1.19 w/Xemacs 21.4.6
Probably wrong group for this, but a quick question. I've just switched
from emacs to Xemacs. In reinstalling ESS 5.1.19 I keep getting the
following error when loading Xemacs:
"Error in init file: Symbol's function definition is void: w32-using-nt"
I've debugged the ess-site.el file, which is where the error originates
from. The line causing the difficulty is:

Fwd: Re: RSiteSearch, sos, rdocumentation.org, ...?
Unfortunately, I am unable to get this search site working again. (The
message below explains why I had to rebuild it.)
The computer worked for the better part of a day downloading and
installing all the help files from all CRAN packages. Somehow it
failed to get the vignettes this time. But I pushed ahead and ran the
part of namazu that makes the search indices: mknmz. And you can see

Fwd: Re: RSiteSearch, sos, rdocumentation.org, ...?
Hello, All:
Jonathan Baron is "giving up" maintaining the RSiteSearch database.
This breaks three things: (1) The R Site Search web service that
Baron has maintained. (2) The RSiteSearch function in the utils
package. (3) The sos package, for which I'm the maintainer and lead
author.
Might someone else be willing to take these over?
For me,

ESS and Emacs
I have been using the document written by John Fox titled
Sn Introduction to ESS + XEmacs for Windows
Users of R.
It's a very nice document and
I went through it carefully but I got
an error when I finished it and launched XEmacs.
The error is "cannot open load file : ess-site".
So, I did more investigation
and it seems like there is a folder

search site for R (http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu)
My search site, http://finzi.psych.upenn.edu, has had several
problems recently, all my fault, for which I apologize. But it
now seems to be running reliably, on a new computer that is much
faster than the old one.
It uses htdig to permit search of the Rhelp mailing list, R
documents, R functions, and various combinations of these.
Search has several options, including Boolean search (with AND,

OK. It is sort of fixed and sort of works.
We'll keep it for now, but this is not going to work forever. When
namazu fails completely I will not have the time to install a new
search engine.
One option is to use google. For a site like this, I think they will
want some money, but I'm not sure, and I do not have the time to deal
with it.
We have over 10,000 packages now. I wonder if
