rubynuby == I''m a''scared to set it all up...
I''ve been mostly lurking here with an occasional nuby question for a few
weeks now. It seems like Ruby and Rails and the many libraries and
tools growing up around it are a remarkable toolset. Unfortunately I''m
finding the whole enchilada a bit daunting.
It seems that if one is to truly tap into the power of this thing and do
a significant amount of developing, one needs

Can Google (et. al.) see rails pages?
Hi,
Noob here.
One problem faced by developers of active content is making sure that
the final results of their magic result in URL''s that Google and other
search engines are comfortable with. Otherwise, your content won''t ever
get spydered and indexed and ultimately returned in a google user''s
results pages.
In reading the agile rails book, it seems that the

Developing in different versions of rails at the same time?
Hi,
I was wondering if some of you have had to keep more than one version of
Rails on your machine at a time? If you have more than one customer,
they may have different requirements. You might need to work on a
pre-existing app that is not scheduled to be moved to a newer version of
Rails right now. How is the best way to deal with this?
thanks,
jp

Not wishing to instigate a DB war, but...
Can I get some opinions on which free DB to use with rails for a virtual
server that will eventually be doing lots of heavy database lifting?
Not a lot of heavy duty querying per se. Think multiple simultaneous
forums and blog sites and the like.
I know each of the different DB possibilities such as MySQL and
PostgreSQL has plus points and minus points. I''m particularly

Noob - port 3000 in URL''s - get rid of it?
Hi, total Noob here.
I have a rails server set up and running. I''m working my way through
the "agile" book.
I see that all of the examples show URL''s that explicitly call for port
3000. How would one go about creating a ruby app that is engaged with a
"normal" URL with no port number in it?
That is apparently the default port for webrick to start up on

Noob, installing rails on a goDaddy virtual server?
Hi,
I''m completely new to all of this. Not even certain this is an
appropriate forum for an installation question.
I''m just about to plunk down some money to get a virtual server. In
looking over the list of isp''s elsewhere on this site, goDaddy isn''t
mentioned - probably because they don''t offer rails as a standard
distribution. There are some

Intel Mac, Rails, MYSQL - access denied
Hi,
Nuby on Rails here trying to bring up an existing app on a new
installation.
The whole ruby/rails/mysql/lighty installation was done per the much
touted "hivelogic article" that runs through all the steps.
I am running into a permission error when I try to do a rake migrate to
set up a session database needed by this existing app. Extracted from
the trace...

SwitchTower: Two development environments
Hi
I have a problem here. I am developing an application which has a local
development environment (on my harddisk), a second one for my customer
(for testing new features) and a production environment which runs
actual application online.
How can I setup SwitchTower to have a possibility to deploy just for a
particular server?
Thanks,
Peter

how do you give focus to a form field?
When you put up a page with a form on it and the top item is a text
field it would be nice to have that field already focused instead of
forcing the user to click in it before they start typing. Is there a
rails (i.e. probably Prototype) way of giving focus to a field? I did
some searching and found nothing.
thanks,
jp
P.S. I''m on a Mac. Perhaps a winoze and/or unix automatically

Fwd: Questions about templates for R
Hi
I am looking for R templates to introduce the R to my students at
Seton hall university. The templates are predefined scripts in R that
will retain its primary intent when individually customized with their
own variable data or text. In this case, my students at Seton Hall
University. For example, PSPad editor provides new users predefined
templates before writing their own scripts.

Switchtower deployment
Hi,
Has anyone experiences using SwitchTower (Windows) in a shared hosting
environment (Textdrive)? I already patched the SwitchTower rake tasks (I
don''t know if someone is interested on it), but i still experience some
problems (not in the sudoers list, ...).
Thank you for answer (and thank you to the textdrive guys, i never had a
such fast support!)

Switchtower deploy fails though setup works
I''m trying to use SwitchTower to deploy from XP to Dreamhost. Based on

rake remote_exec on Windows
I am using the shovel deploy.rb from http://nubyonrails.com/pages/shovel
I have SwitchTower-ized my app, copied the shovel deploy.rb file and put
my settings in it.
But when I run "rake remote_exec ACTION=setup_lighty" from the local app
root it has no effect. It should prompt for a password for at least
throw an error? I just get returned to the DOS prompt.

how do I get the IP address of form poster?
How can I capture the IP address of a user who is posting my sign-in or
login forms? I want to store it as part of my user information so that
if I want to block the user in the future, I can also block the IP
address they used to sign in.

Switchtower - unitialized constant
Just loaded up Switchtower 1.0 today, via gems. I''m on OS X (10.4.5),
with ruby and friends installed via darwinports in opt/local.
After installing ST, I switchtowerized my app, set up the deploy recipe,
then ran:
rake remote_exec ACTION=setup
When I do, i get this error:
rake aborted!
uninitialized constant SwitchTower
Obviously, this happens with any of the tasks in ST (like

Switchtower isn''t restarting lighttpd
I''ve got switchtower set up, and it seems to work fine except for one
problem: It doesn''t successfully restart lighttpd. I have the

Switchtower Port Issues
Hi there,
I''m having some difficulties finding some decent info on getting
Switchtower to function for my needs. I''ve read most of the
Switchtower doc on http://manuals.rubyonrails.com/read/chapter/97,
however it''s not answering some potent questions I have.
1. The doc mentions, as an example, using an SVN repos at
