configure on solaris 2.9 with non GNU compilers (PR#8300)
Full_Name: Toby Muhlhofer
Version: 2.2.0, 2.1.1
OS: Solaris 2.9
Submission from: (NULL) (128.83.62.46)
I'm trying to compile R on a Solaris machine. The default C compiler is cc
(although gcc is available) and the default Fortran compiler is f95 (although
g77 is available).
Without defining the F77 environment variable, configure defaults to f95 as a
Fortran compiler and eventually fails

using src/Makevars file
Hi all,
Thanks to all who offered advice on using F95 in R.
Now I'm trying to compile a test package using gfortran, Linux 2.4.21 and
R 2.1.0.
I was able to successfully compile and use a test F95 routine by setting my
environment variables as follows in bash:
export PATH=~/bin/:$PATH
export F77=gfortran
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/bin/irun/lib
export GFORTRAN_STDIN_UNIT=-1

I installed R-1.4.0 and then updated all the packages I have, using

Fortran level mismatch between package and R
We have a user here who is attempting to compile a package which
requires f90 (gfortran will do). Our version of R was built with f77
(g77). When the user attempts to build the package, f77 is always
invoked and fails due to the presence of f90 features.
Is there a simple method or some documentation on how to force a
package build to use a different compiler than the one used in

R with Sun Studio Fortran 95 compiler
Hi,
I am trying to compile R 1.9.1 and 2.0.0 on Solaris 2.8 with Sun Studio
Fortran 95 compiler but I have obtained some errors which I enclose. I
have compiled R with g77 GNU compiler and it was OK.
Does anyone know if R 2.0.0 has been successfully built on Solaris 2.8
with Sun Studio Fortran 95 compiler? or at least, How could I achieve
this? The R installation manual does not have any

Compiling R 1.8.x under Solaris 9
Dear all,
I am trying to compile R-1.8.0 and R-1.8.1-beta (as 19-11-2003) under
Solaris 9 using the Sun compilers. './configure' fails; the last lines of
the display are:

checking whether cc supports -c -o FILE.lo... yes

further f77/gfortran
OK: despite Dirk's very kind help, I decided that
trying to deal with R configuration and Debian configuration
simultaneously was too difficult.
I did manage to solve my problem by reconfiguring/making/
installing all of 2.3.1 from source:
./configure F77=/usr/bin/g77
make
make install
A few questions inspired by this experience:
(1) it seems a bit odd that R sets F77=gfortran

BLAS and the Sun Performance Library
Hi, all,
We just got the Sun Performance Library for our Suns running Solaris 2.6,
and I read the relevant section of the "R Installation and Administration
Manual" about configuring R to use BLAS. The manual suggests you must use
Sun's "cc" and "f95" (maybe "f90"?) compilers in order to use the Performance
Library. We have "cc" but not

Question on trying to build R 2.11.1 on Tru64(aka OSF1) system
Hello,
I am trying to build the R-2.11.1 software for university faculty to use in
research projects on a DEC/Compaq/HP AlphaServer model GS160 16CPU/64GB memory
running Tru64Unix aka OSF1 version 5.1B-5.
Is it known whether it is possible to build the R-2.11.1 software on the
platform I am using?
In my attempts to build the R-2.11.1 software, I first used the native C
and Fortran 77/90/95

Successfully building 2.3.1 with Sun One Studio 8 on Solaris 9 (SPARC)
I had a hard time building 1.9.1 with the Sun One Studio
on Solaris (SPARC) almost 2 years ago. I filed a bug report,
but I can't seem to find it right now. For 2.3.1, I discovered
that the same problems remain. Here are the tricks that
resolved them for me if anyone is interested.
#1. /usr/lib/cpp will give you nothing, but headaches.
Fortunately, the Solaris Software Companion CD (SSCC)

64-bit R build with Studio 12 on Sparc v9
Hi,
I'm working on a server with a sparcv9 chip using SunOS 5.9 Generic May

a 64-bit version of R-2.6.1, and while the configure script runs, the
make does not.
Here are the options I set in config.site:

configure problem - mixed fortran/c
I'm trying to build R 1.9.0 to get the opportunity to build rpy for some
folks at my office. (I'm a Python guy, not an R guy, so I'm completely
unfamiliar with the machinations of building R.) I'm having trouble getting
past the configure step. A plain old configure generates this output at the
end:

regression tests for unlink and wildcards fail - Solaris 10 SPARC / Sun Studio 12 (PR#10501)
