segfault when running heatmap()
Hi, I was wondering if someone in the mailing list has any insight into this
segfault error that I consistently find when running a script containing
heatmap() in R 2.8.1 and 2.8.0 on a Linux 64-bit machine.
Some points:
1. This occurs when running heatmap().
2. Interestingly, if I source() the script or copy and paste the script in
its entirety, this error occurs. However, if I run the

Printing to jpeg (dev.print)
Hi,
This may be an easy question, but let me ask it. When writing a plot
to a jpeg file:
> plot(runif(30))
> dev.print(file="test.jpeg", device=jpeg, width=600)
the plot I receive has gray background, the result on no account I
want to receive. The same situation occurs when printing to a bmp
file. But when printing a pdf file, the background is white as it
should be. What

dev.print and X11(canvas = "black")
In Splus, I often use graphics windows with a black background and white
foreground. The S print.graph() function sends the current plot to my
printer but with a white background and black foreground. I'd like to
be able to do something similar in R, but can't figure out how. I've
tried various permutations of dev.copy() and dev.print(), but it seems
that the foreground color is

Different gridlines per panel in xyplot
In the example R script below, horizontal gray gridlines are drawn at y
coordinates where the points are drawn with the code:
panel.abline(h=y, v=xScale, col.line="gray")
How do I change this so that the horizontal gray gridlines are drawn at y
coordinates where the y labels are drawn? The challenge is that each panel
has different y-ranges (in my real example the y-ranges and

2D display in Rails
Hi,
Imagine you have a program that contains information on an entity
called a Player. There can be lots of Players, say a thousand of
them. Players have 20 or so attributes, two of them are an X and Y
position. The Players'' attributes are updated many times per second.
Now imagine you need to create a web app that shows a 2D overhead
display of the all the Players. A grid should be

coplot with png: disappearing grid lines
Dear useRs,
When I use coplot() and output to png/jpeg/bmp, the grid lines from
the scatter plots disappear. If I output to pdf() the grid lines are
there, however I can't use it - I have many points, and the resulting
PDF file is large and very slow to open and scroll through. (By the
way, if I click File-Save As-png/jpeg/bmp from Rgui.exe, the grid
lines are preserved - but I need to use

How to colorize the panel backgrounds of pairs()?
Dear expeRts,
I would like to colorize the backgrounds of a pairs plot according to the respective panel number. Here is what I tried (without success):
count <- 0
mypanel <- function(x, y, ...){
count <<- count+1
bg. <- if(count %in% c(1,4,9,12)) "#FDFF65" else NA
points(x, y, cex=0.5, bg=bg)
}
U <- matrix(runif(4*500), ncol=4)
pairs(U, panel=mypanel)

Polygon shading line colors
Hi there,
I'm having trouble working out how to change the colors of polygon
shading lines. If I plot a polygon with
polygon(poly,density=30,borders=gray(0.5))
I get gray borders but black shading lines; I have tried adding
col=gray(0.5), bg=gray(0.5) and fg=gray(0.5), but no luck.
How can I change the colors of the shading? The help file doesn't
seem to detail this, so any

barplot default colors
Dear R-help,
Can some one explain why barplot() uses changing colors in the bars by
default? I should think that most of the time when people draw barplots,
they want the bars to be in the same color. (At least that's what I'd
expect. The first time I used barplot() in R, I was shocked to see the
colors.) As an example, one example in ?layout draws a scatterplot with
histograms drawn

Problem with R colors
Hello,
I am having difficulty obtaining the correct colors in my R charts.
> colors()[c(552, 254, 26)]
[1] "red" "green" "blue"
But, if I specify col=552 in my barplot, I get gray bars. Likewise,
col=254 gives bright pink, and col=26 is a red-orange. I get accurate
results when I spell out the names, but I am making a pallet with 20- 30
colors and it is a

gray background on jpegs using dev.print()
When I try writing the current device to a jpeg file I keep getting a gray background
for the jpeg images using dev.print.
I have tried using the option bg="white" and bg="#FFFFFF"
but neither seem to have any effect.
If instead of writing to a screen device I open a jpeg device I can get any background color
I want. This works, but I prefer to write to the screen and then

gif, jpeg and png image files reader AND tcltk image
Hi all,
Roger Peng and Jason Turner's suggestion with ImageMagick seem to be the
simplest "dirty" way
to get the problem solved.
But I ran into yet another interesting but quite round-about way to solve
the problem (partially). Through tcltk package, one can read in the gif
image with
> x <- tkcmd("image", "create", "photo", file=mypic.gif)

tcltk, X11 protocol error: Bug?
Hi,
I am having trouble debugging this one. The code is attached below, but
it seems to be a problem at the
C-tk interface. If I run this 1 time there are no problems if I run it
more than once I start to get warnings
that increase in multiples of 11 everytime I run it. Here is a sample

mouse event handling
Hi all,
I have difficulty understanding WxRuby / WxWidgets event handling,
hoping someone here can lend us some light.
Im writing a simple gui app where I need to receive mouse click events
from the shapes drawn on a canvas (a simple object inheriting from
ScrolledWindow, as seen in many examples). Shapes arent buttons so I
think I''ll need to be checking the coordinates to be able to

I forgot to mention that the bg="white" trick works on the plot (making

perception of graphical data
Hello,
I apologize that this is off-topic. I am seeking information on
perception of graphical data, in an effort to improve the plots I
produce. Would anyone point me to literature reviews in this area? (Or
keywords to try on google?) Is this located somewhere near cognitive
science, psychology, human factors research?
For example, some specific questions I have are:

Thanks lot in advance,

Dragging images across the canvas
Hi wxRuby Gurus,
I''m trying to write a sample program which allows me to drag an image
(by left_mouse_button down) across the canvas.
I got it to work ... well, sort of. The problem is I can drag it only by
clicking on the left top corner of the image and nowhere else.
Besides, the dragging is not very smooth. How can I make it better?
I am using wxRuby 0.6.0 on Win XP (Home) and
