What to install/configure?
Hi railers,
(railers? Rails-ers? How do you folks refer to yourselves?)
I''m brand spankin'' new to most of this. I''m just learning ruby, just
learning rails, just learning MySQL, and really just learning about
Apache/CGI-type stuff. I have a long background with UNIX sysadmin and
scripting (lots and lots of Perl and Bash), so the ruby is coming fast

DHTML on WEBrick
I have some simple dhtml code in my rails app that hides fields I do not
need displayed. This worked great as soon as I click on the item that
initiates the hide, but within one second it pops back up. My assumption
is WEBrick is refreshing to a previous state and I wondered what y''all
thought was the appropriate way to handle. I thought maybe the default
environment in production would

[Very OT] Steve Jobs, is he sick?
For us "Railers" on Mac systems we all probably watched Steve Job''s
keynote at the WWDC yesterday. Was it just me, or did Steve look
"sick"? I mean he has lost a lot of weight and his skin was very drawn.

his options if its not in the list he/she selects Others/Not Present and a
new textfield should pop up and the data entered there should be considered

XML Revisited
Hello Guys.
I recently contacted polycoms tech support asking if their phones supported
XML pushed information to which they replied that only model 600 had a
microbrwoser capable of reading dhtml files and such.
My question to the community is: is somebody doing any XML info push to any
brand of phones except Cisco? How are you doing it?
One of the wonders of VoIP should be the means to send

If Tuscon has some rail users, I know there must be some other Austin
railers out there. Have I missed some meetings that I didn''t know about?

DHTML Drop Menu Helpers with Rails?
Does RoR ship with, or have any add-in helpers used to construct a "drop
menu" typically done with DHTML trickery and some libraries? I am
referring to menus like the "File Edit View ... Help" menus with
cascading drop-down navigation that you find at the top of most GUI
applications.

rounded corners in rails apps ?
Hi all
I like very much rounded corners and often used thee well known nifty
Javascript approach for that, Recently I discovered Rico (
http://openrico.org), which does the same and is much simpler to use (don''t
require additional css files) and is based on prototype.js. This is all very
nice, but there is currently one problem, the latest Rico library seems to
require prototype 1.3.1,

Date Validation: The February 31st Problem
Hi Railers,
I''m wondering if anyone has found a nice solution to the problem of validating
dates to prevent things like 29th February 2005, or 31st September and so on?
I see it was discussed before...
http://wrath.rubyonrails.org/pipermail/rails/2005-March/003804.html
...but with no particularly ideal solution...

Plugins and svn
Hi railers,
What do you do when you must use a plugin in a rails app that is under
subversion?
I think that an approach is simply install a version of the plugin, and once
all the test pass, commit the plugin itself to the repository, inside the
/vendor/ of the app. If a new version of the plugin is released, your app is
still using the working one (although the new version could work too).

Can't find rails after re-installing/upgrading Kubuntu
Hello Railers (?),
I have just re-installed my machine with the lattest Kubuntu, which brings with Rails 1.2.4 instead of 1.2.3. Now my Rail project doesn''t start anymore. At first I''ve got this message:
Cannot find gem for Rails ~>1.2.3.0:
Install the missing gem with ''gem install -v=1.2.3 rails'', or

Lookup pattern in Ruby
Hi folks,
I''m curious how a lookup with a large group of values would be handled
in Rails.
For example, I have a (contrived) AnimalType filtering a list of many
Animals--more than can be presented comfortably in a dropdown box.
Therefore I need to either redirect to another screen to select an
animal (returning after the selection is made), or show a dialog--modal
or otherwise--to
