Trouble with HTML search engine
There have been a number of posts to this list by people having trouble with the HTML search engine. Often these troubles are caused by incorrect setups (user hasn't installed Java properly, or Java is disabled, or Javascript is disabled). Sometimes the trouble persists even when Java is installed properly. I have written an alternative HTML search engine, which is based on Javascript rather

Defining function in template files?
Hi, Is it possible to define a function in a template file? For example, I thought it might be a good idea to define my Debian systems'' /etc/apt/sources.list files based on what level of stability and freeness a system should have. So I have this puppet code: #---------- apt.pp ---------------- define apt-sources-list

Inconsistent results from .C()
Hello, I've run into a problem which is both maddening and rather hard to replicate, therefore I wondered if someone might know of a plausible explanation for it. I couldn't find anything in the archives, though maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing. I'm calling some C code using .C, and get the vector I'm interested in back as the 7th location in the returned list.

using [i] to plot & label all vector elements
I'm using 1.6.2 on a win 2k box. (I know I'm due for an upgrade.) I've used brute force to label a series of vectors, and I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this. I wanted to create a biplot of the 2nd & 3rd PCs, and did this: test <- edit(loadings(cv.prc.spr)) test.1 <- test[,1] test.2 <- test[,2] test.3 <- test[,3] x0 <- 0 y0 <- 0 i <-

Problems with rank()
If you enter the following values for x and y: x: 2.2 3.7 2.1 0.4 2.8 0.3 0.4 1.4 5.4 6.0 y: 6.0 8.1 1.8 1.3 5.2 0.6 1.0 1.9 6.8 6.5 and do rank(abs(y-x)), you should get two ties, one at 0.3 and one at 0.5. R, and S-Plus5 by that matter recognise the tie at 0.5 and give it rank 3.5, but gives one of the two 0.3 values rank 1 and one of them 2, whereas they should boh be 1.5. Any suggestions? when

high bitrate quality?
Hi all, I used vorbis several years ago because of its freeness and VBR, but after playing ha.org and getting an mp3-capable discman, I switched to APS and API mp3 encoding. Now, I am liking musepack a lot, but the flexibility is more "there" for the vorbis format, including players, tagging comments (lyrics in the comments - killer idea!), etc.... However, I am a bit worried

Biplots
I want to plot biplots. I have seen the function biplot, but there are some extra features I would like, that I do not know how to achieve. 1. My observations, and my variables, fall into groups. Is there a way to, say, plot the observations in several different colours, according to which group the observation falls into? Similarly with the variables? I am used to the lattice idiom, in which one

Factor names & levels
When I alter the levels of a factor, why does it alter the names too? f <- factor(c(A="one",B="two",C="one",D="one",E="three"), levels=c("one","two","three")) names(f) -- gives [1] "A" "B" "C" "D" "E" levels(f) <-

R for teaching multivariate statistics (Summary)
Greetings all I promised a summary of the responses that I got to my question: "Next year I will be teaching a third year course in applied statistics about 1/3 of which is multivariate statistics. I would be interested in hearing experiences from those who have taught multivariate statistics using R. Especially I am interested in the textbook that you used or recommended." There

Legend placement in barplot?
This has been asked before, but all the answers are hidiously complex. The legend.text=TRUE option of barplot is almost exactly what I need, except I need a legend.placement='tl' (top left) option. This option would be in contrast to the default placement which we could call 'tr' (top right). Anyone know how to edit the barplot code to make this change? Could someone like me

R Graph Gallery : categorization of the graphs
Hello all, It seems that the next improvement to the R Graph Gallery is categorization of the graphics, that way each graph will be easier to find. That step should be done *carefully* if we want to avoid the opposite side-effect : graph not reachable through the categories. That's why the wisdom of the R community is required. Graphics will be classified in : - categories -

highly biased PCA data?
Hello, supposing that I have two or three clear categories for my data, lets say pet preferece across fish, cat, dog. Lets say most people rate their preference as being mostly one of the categories. I want to do pca on the data to see three 'groups' of people, one group for fish, one for cat and one for dog. I would like to see the odd person who likes both or all three in the

hist function to give each cell equal area
Hi, I want to use hist with non-equi-spaced breaks, picked such that the fraction of the data points falling in the cells (defined by 'breaks') is roughly equal accross all cells. Is there such a function that will automatically try to determine the breaks to fullfill this requirement? Something like.. hist( x, br = magic_function_to_pick_breaks()) For example, if x looked like

Adding values to the end of a vector?
I want to add values onto the end of a vector, for example... x <- vector for (i in 1:5){ add_to_end_of_vector(i,x) } I just cant find the answer to this question! Sorry for such a basic question, I tried... x <- c() for (i in 1:5) x[length(x)] <- i but it didn't work.

ESS+R not closing gracefully
I am having trouble with ESS+R. I don't know if it is an ESS problem or an R problem, so I'm posting to this mailing list in the first instance. I am using R 1.6.2, Windows XP (latest updates installed), XEmacs 21.4, and ESS 5.1.21. I have experienced the same problem under Windows 2000 and recent versions of Emacs and ESS (though my current Windows XP installation is from scratch, and

Full_Name: Dan B Version: na OS: na Submission from: (NULL) (80.6.127.185) I can't log into the bug tracker (I can't find where to register / login). In this way I can't add the following context diff (hopefully in the right order) for my changes to the matrix.Rd... Hmm... I guess this should be a separate report anyway... The first diff explains how the dimnames list should

barplot and ylim - display problems
The following single line of code shows what I am trying to do, and the problem I am having... barplot(c(101,102,103),ylim=c(100,103)) The 'xaxis' is missing, and the grey bars 'fall off' the plot area. This is generally ugly, and I would like to trim the bars (ideally they would have a ragged appearance to show that I am 'zooming in'). I can see why what I am trying to
