variance components
Dear All,
I need to calculate the variance components in a mixed effect model (one
fixed and one random effect) with REML (maximizing the proportion of
the likelihood that does not depend on the fixed effects). In S+ there is
the varcomp function, but I would like to do it in R. Is there a way to do
that?
Thanks!

Can boot return matrix?
Dear All,
I have a function which takes a n x m matrix as an argument and returns
an n x n matrix. I want to take bootstrap samples form the input matrix in
the way as each row represent a multivariate observation, so each
bootstrap sample would be an n x m matrix, and on each sample I want to
calculate the n x n matrix.
This task can be done with the sample function, but I would like to use

bca ci's and NaN's in boot.out
Dear All,
I am trying to use the bca.ci function on a boot.out object which consists
a few NaN's and I want to ignore those NaN's, and get a ci
only for the "normal" values.
boot.out$t has R number of values for 3000 different statistics, so when I
use boot.ci(boot.out, index=i) and i happens to be a column in boot.out$t
with some NaN's in there I get an error message. I

groups of boxplots
Hi,
does anyone know how to make pairs of boxplots? E.g. 5 pairs of boxes. I
figured a not very elegant way, by inserting a dummy NA field to the list
where the data is given. So, where I have the dummy I got more distance
between boxes, as a result it looks like groups. But I am having problems
with putting the names under the groups, and the thick marks.
Any better idea?
Thanks, Kati

No subject
Hi,
I have a coding problem. I have data pairs, and I want to calculate a
parameter for the data pairs as a whole data set (so not using the
information that thely are pairs) I am looking for bias in that certain
parameter so I want to bootstrap these data pairs(!), and than calculate
the parameter. I run into a coding problem. How should I define theta in
order to resample the pairs, but than

lists to arrays
Does anyone know how to coerce a list to an array? I have a list with
equal sized matrixes and I want to coerce it to a 3D array.
Why is that that I cannot feed in equal sized matrixes as layers to an
array even if I set dim 3?
Thanks!

apply with two matrixes
Hi,
I have a function which does a certain task with two vectors,
f1 <- function(a,b){body}
I also have a list of matrixes (all with the same dim's), and for each
column of each matrix in the list I want to use "f1", in such way that
it gives the vector "a" in the first argument of "f1". The second argument
of the function "b" also comes form a

Problems with Mac OS X Beta 3 display?
Beyond a general problem with X11, that it sometimes doesn't display
-especially when it is inactive for a while- new windows (like new
terminal, R device, or emacs) and only the restart helps, I found a
problem which might also be especially the X11's problem.
>From an apple Terminal window, the following code (which is the first
boot.ci example) works just fine.

boot&table
Hello,
I want to bootstarp a sample, and I need table() for each sample taken,
like if R=100, I need all 100 table(). It seems to mee that boot() works
anly if you assing statistics, that gives you back one number, like
mean. Although the ?boot/statistics says that it can be a vector
containing statistics. table() gives an array, so it might work. Does
anybody have an idea how? I konw it can be

make? on Macos 10.2.4
Greetings on A.N. Kolmogorov's 100th birthday:
I am sure that this is a resolved problem, certainly it has been raised in R help
several times before, but I can't seem to find the right clue. I've recently
upgraded a G4 to OS 10.2.5 and I thought I would have another go at installing
R from source, after failing to accomplish this in 10.1.
So with 1.7.0 from CRAN configure seems to

R 1.7.0 fails to compile on OS X 10.2.5
Hello -
I'm trying to compile R 1.7.0 on a PowerBook running OS X 10.2.5. I've
compiled R (1.6.2) successfully before on this machine, under either
10.2.3 or 10.2.4. My gcc is from the latest Apple Developer Tools
release and the g77 is up-to-date via Fink. R passes ./configure just
fine, with the following options:
R is now configured for powerpc-apple-darwin6.5

I hope someone can point me, a newcomer to building R as well as 64-bit R, in
a useful direction. I have a dual Opteron 275 box running RedHat EL4. I ran
configure successfully, and, then, get the following error while running make:

I am using rw1001 on Windows 98. I have a package that involves both c and
fortran code, which compiled successfully under cygnus b20.1 with Mummit Kahn''s
port of gcc 2.95.2. I have upgraded to the new net release of cygwin (version
1.1, including the recent cygwin package upgrade to 1.1.1). Now when the dll
for my package is being created, I get the string of errors like:

install problem -- libg2c
Hi, there
I'm totally new to this. I used to use SPLUS, but think maybe
useful to try R at home.
But seems it doesn't like me. I got error message says
ld: cannot open -lg2c: No such file or directory
My OS is openlinux 2.3. I use egcs-2.91.66. I searched under
/lib/egcs-2.91.66/ but found no libg2c.a. There's only a libgcc.a.
Thought maybe g77 people changed

I have just installed the version of R for Linux Enterprise Server AS. When R is launched, I receive the following error message:
R: error while loading shared libraries: libg2c.so.o cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory
I have added the path to the library above to the /usr/etc/ld.so.conf file and then run ldconfig -v. The listing then shows that the libg2c.so.o is

Hi,
My previous message is appended: I'm still struggling with building on AIX. I
updated my config.site to follow the suggestions from R-admin:

SHLIB_LDFLAGS=-Wl,-G
This led to an error during configure:
