How to personalize the rpart function: t.default(x)
I'm trying to personalize the rpart function by introducing a
list('init','split','eval') in the argument method. But I receive an error
message:"Error in t.default(x): argument is not a matrix".
Can anyone tell me what the argument of this function is or where this
function appears in the rpart function.Thanks Simone Vantini

Does something like partition.rpart() exist?
I'd like to create a bidimensional presentation of a classification tree
built using the rpart() function. I've seen that a partition.tree()
function exists for the tree() function. Does a similar function exist
for the rpart() function?
Thanks a lot Simone Vantini

effective df in local polinomial regression
Hallo R-users,
I would like to know if there is a way to get the effective degrees
of freedom in
local polinomial regression. At the moment, to carry out the local
polinomial regression, I am using the function
locpoly() in library KernSmooth (I need to estimate both the regression
function and its derivatives, up to the 3rd one).
Thanks,
Simone

Extending Element with getTop, getWidth, getLeft problem
Hi,
I need to extend the Element object with getTop, getWidth, getLeft .
I wrote something like this in an js file and loaded it after the
prototype.js .
----------------------------------------------------
Object.extend(Element, {
getWidth: function(element) {
element = $(element);
return element.offsetWidth;
},
getTop: function(element) {
element = $(element);

Element.addMethods functions swallowing exceptions (IE6 + 7)
IE6 and IE7 are not correctly handling the ''throw'' command for
functions attached to Element via Element.addMethods. Firefox and
Safari are fine.
See the example below.
For IE6: functions called with no attributes (ie: funcName())
correctly handle thrown errors. Funcions called with attributes (ie:
funcName("foo")) will respond to the throw command and pass execution

[OT] how does ELF record file scope things?
fred.c:
static void sfunc(int *p) { *p=1; }
static int x;
void fred(void)
{
... sfunc(&x); ...
}
greg.c:
static void sfunc(int *p) { *p=2; }
static int x;
void greg(void)
{
... sfunc(&x); ...
}
Once the object files from fred.c and greg.c are linked,
how does ELF distinguish the sfunc's and the x's?
I've been trying to RTFM, but it hasn't helped?

Adding my own extensions with Elements.addMethods()
When I add my own extensions to DOM elements, is there a way to only
add my extensions to the specific types of DOM elements (e.g. SELECT)
to which my extensions apply or are intended to operate?
Based on the Prototype API documentation (http://prototypejs.org/learn/
extensions), it appears that anytime I extend an element, all the
extensions (Prototype''s and my own) are copied to that

LLVM social in Italy anyone interested?
Hi all,
is there any Italian developer that can be interested in a LLVM social event/meetup in Italy?

Element.addMethods() is not a function after upgrade to 1.7.0
After upgrading to prototype 1.5.0 and scriptaculous 1.7.0 my
autocompleter.local died... firebug reports that effects.js is to
blame calling Element.addMethods();
I can not find out why cause as far as I can see it does exist in
prototype.js.
Any pointers anyone :(

Bug in rsyncd 2.5.0 while handling config file string values
I compiled and tried rsync 2.5.0 but could not get the server
running. loadparm.c:string_set() now calls free() which it did not do
in 2.4.6 and this free() tries to free memory that was not allocated
with malloc.
Here is a gdb run (done after adding return before fork() in
become_daemon) which shows where it crashes and what my minimal config
file for demonstrating the bug was. The config file

Importing arguments for use by functions in a script
QUESTION:
Is there a way of passing arguments from an external file to a script so
that they can be used directly by functions within the script?
I have a series of interdependent functions. I wish to test the time for
processing various datasets.
I was initially doing something along the lines of the following (yes, I am
new to R):
rm(list= ls())

Robust fitting
Good evening,I am Marta Colombo, student of "Politecnico di Milano". I'm studying Local Regression Techniques such as loess, smoothing splines and kernel smoothers. Choosing "symmetric" for the argument "family" in loess function it is possible to produce a robust estimate , in function smooth.spline and ksmooth I didn't find this possibility. Well, is there a

User defined split function in rpart
Dear R community,
I am trying to write my own user defined split function for rpart. I read
the example in the tests directory and I understand the general idea of the
how to implement user defined splitting functions. However, I am having
troubles with addressing the data frame used in calling rpart in my split
functions.
For example, in the evaluation function that is called once per node,

function kde2d
Good evening,
I am Marta Colombo, student at Milan's Politecnico.
Thank you very much for your kindness, this mailing list is really useful.
I am using the function kde2d for two-dimensional kernel density estimation and I'd like to know something more about this kind of density estimator. In particular I'd like to know: what bandwidth is used ?
Thank you in advance for your attention

cross-validation in rpart
Hello list,
I'm having a problem with custom functions in rpart, and before I tear my
hair out trying to fix it, I want to make sure it's actually a problem. It
seems that, when you write custom functions for rpart (init, split and eval)
then rpart no longer cross-validates the resulting tree to return errors. A
simple test is to use the usersplits.R function to get a simple, custom

llvmcpy: yet another Python binding for LLVM
Hi, I wrote yet another [1,2] Python binding for LLVM! I'm doing this
because llvmlite has some serious limitations: 1) it cannot parse an
existing IR, only create new modules [3], 2) it keeps its own
representation of the IR (which is less memory efficient than the LLVM
one), and 3) each llvmlite version supports a single LLVM version.
Considering that my need is to load modules of hundreds

obtaining table cell text data
I''m writing some code to subset a table based on the contents of
particular columns. My event handler starts off like this:
subsetChange: function(e) {
var subset = $F(''subsetSelector'');
var rows = $$(''.content-row'');
rows.each(function(row) {
var value = row.down(''.Platform_Category'').childNodes[0].data;

display of a loess fitted surface
Good morning,
I am Marta Colombo,student at Politecnico,Milan. I am studying local regression models and I am using loess function. My problem is that when I have a loess object I don't know how to display the fitted surface; in fact, while in S when you have a loess object you can see it writing plot(object), in R this dosen't work. Also I'd like to know if there is something like the

fisher.test
Hi!
I am Marta Colombo, student in Mathematical Engineering at "Politecnico di Milano". For my master degree thesis I have to analyze some categorical data. My dataset is composed by 327 individuals and 16 variables. I am using Fisher exact test to test independence on IxJ contingency tables, but I have a problem with one variable.
R gives me this error message:
FEXACT error 7.
