update from tar.gz in local directory on Unix/Solaris
Hi list,
I have not been successful in finding out from the available
documentation how under Unix/Solaris to update a packages which I
downloaded from the net as the original *.tar.gz and stored in a local
file, say
(1) home/woodstock/hoffmacw/R/Sources/pack.tar.gz
A lot of installed libraries are residing in
(2) home/woodstock/hoffmacw/R/library/
but it is unclear to me, how to proceed,

masked at loading
Hi,
I am getting masked objects and I think the maintainers of the
respective packages (lattice, boot, survival, aml) should agree on how
to eliminate th conflicts.
Here my start up protocol with the relevant information:

construct a bundle, subdirs do not exist?
Hi,
Sorry to bother, but I checked around and did not succed creating a
bundle from six existing packages (which are checkable, installable,
etc. individually). I carefully followed the procedure given in ch.
1.1.5 Package bundles. However, I am getting

R_PROFILE on Windows
Dear R-devel,
There seems to be a bug in the Startup section, regarding the
R_PROFILE environment variable in Windows. If not a bug in the Startup
itself, perhaps a bug in the documentation.
According to ?Startup:
Then R searches for the site-wide startup profile unless the
command line option '--no-site-file' was given. The name of this
file is

Sys.getenv
I am running R-1.3.0 on Solaris 8:
Under Solaris I do
setenv dendro_us hoffmann
echo $dendro_us gives back:
hoffmann
which is correct.
When in R I do:
Sys.getenv("dendro_us") I get
dendro_us
""
which is NOT correct:
Inverse effect (taken from help of Sys.getenv)
Under R:
print(Sys.putenv("R_TEST"="testit", ABC=123))

Use of R_PROFILE.R / install.R
According to R-exts:
The second purpose for @file{install.R} is to hold code that needs to be
executed each time the package is attached, after the image is
loaded. Few packages have a need for such code so @file{install.R} is
normally an empty file.
The optional file @file{R_PROFILE.R} is executed before the code in the
@file{R} subdirectory and should be used to set up an

How to set R_PROFILE conditional on batch or interactive mode
I am running R 2.8.1 on SUSE Linux. I would like to be able to set
R_PROFILE to two different possibilities. One when R is called by R CMD
BATCH and another any other time. Is this possible?

Rprofile.site not executed?
It seems that my Rprofile.site file is not executed when I start R. To
test this I included the following code in that file:
.First <- function(){
cat("\nWelcome at", date(), "\n")
flush.console()
}
When I start R the message above is not displayed.
I am running R 2.6.1 (rgui.exe) under Vista Home Premium. The
Rprofile.site is in the etc folder and the R_PROFILE

problems with ESS & R ...
Hi!
I have R 1.9.1, Mac OS X 10.3.5, GNU Emacs 21.2.1 and ESS 5.2.3.
I installed today the ESS by not changing ess-site.el, but creating
.emacs in $home with the single line:
$ cat ~/.emacs

If I start now emacs and then R (with M-x R) then I get:

Cannot add machine account
Hi,
I'm running Samba as a PDC on a Debian Etch machine (3.0.24-6etch9).
It's been some time (months, maybe 1 year) since I last added a new
machine to the domain, but I'd need to do it today and I'm getting an error:

Unable to add machine! (does it already exist?)

The install.R and R_PROFILE.R files
R-exts says
Both install.R and R_PROFILE.R should be viewed as experimental; the
mechanism to execute code before attaching or installing the package may
change in the near future. With the other facilities available as from R
2.0.0 they should be removed if possible.
Every usage of these on CRAN is unnecessary. If you want to save the
image, say so in the SaveImage field in
