vectorization question
If you look at the structure, you'll see:
> x$V4 <- 0
> str(x)
`data.frame': 4 obs. of 4 variables:
$ V1: int 1 2 3 4
$ V2: int 5 6 7 8
$ V3: int 9 10 11 12
$ V4: num 0
Don't know if this is the intended result. In any case, you're probably
better off using data.matrix, as
> data.matrix(x)
V1 V2 V3 V4
1 1 5 9 0
2 2 6 10 0
3 3 7 11 0
4 4 8 12

Mahalanobis
Dear all
Why isn'it possible to calculate Mahalanobis distances with R for a matrix
with 1 row (observations) more than the number of columns (variables)?
> mydata <- matrix(runif(12,-5,5), 4, 3)
> mahalanobis(x=mydata, center=apply(mydata,2,mean), cov=var(mydata))
[1] 2.25 2.25 2.25 2.25
> mydata <- matrix(runif(420,-5,5), 21, 20)
> mahalanobis(x=mydata,

help
Hello,
I am a new member, and I need your help.
For my work (thesis), I use the package rpart to construct trees.
But, to continu my studies, I need to calcule the 'variable importance'. But, I
don't find a program to do this in the implementation of R.
Is there someone who know if there exist a program which calculate the 'variable
importance', notion defined by Breiman and

Reference a variable inside a string and another for object assingments
Hi R community
I copied a bit of my R code that gets some data from a database. You
won't be able to run the code, but I am a beginner so you will
probably understand what going on.
I would like to make a variable I can refer to inside the sqlQuery.
Instead of writing the start date and time (ex SP.lokaldatotid >=
'2005-01-01 00:00:00') inside the query I would like to define it

model.matrix troubles with AlgDesign
Dear DevelopeRs,
in continuing with my suite of packages on experimental design, I am stuck
with an issue that appears to be related to package AlgDesign - I have tried
to get it solved by Bob Wheeler, but he seems to be stuck as well.
Whenever AlgDesign is loaded, some of my code does not work any more. For
example, in a fresh R session:
require(DoE.base)
fac.design(nlevels=c(2,6,2))

nls and R scoping rules
I apologize for posting this in essence the second time (no light at the
end of the tunnel yet..):
is there a way to enforce that "nls" takes both, the data *and* the
model definition from the parent environment? the following fragment
shows the problem.
#======== cut here==========
wrapper <- function (choose=0)
{
x <- seq(0,2*pi,len=100)
y <- sin(1.5*x);

nls problem
hi list,
used versions: 2.12.1 and 2.14.0 under ubuntu and macosx.
I recently stumbled over a problem with `nls', which occurs if the model
is not specified explicitly but via an evaluation of a 'call' object.
simple example:
8<--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
nlsProblem <- function (len = 5) {

strange `nls' behaviour
I initially thought, this should better be posted to r-devel
but alas! no response. so I try it here. sory for the
lengthy explanation but it seems unavoidable. to quickly see
the problem simply copy the litte example below and execute
f(n=5)
which crashes. called with n != 5 (and of course n>3 since
there are 3 parameters in the model...) everything is as it
should be.

2 KM curves on the same plot
Hello,
Can anyone suggest a simple way to generate a Kaplan-Meier plot with 2 survfit objects, just like this one:?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fEcpdIdE2xYtA6LBQN9ck3JkL6-goabX/view?usp=sharing
Suppose I have 2 survfit objects: fit1 is for the curve on the left (survtime has been truncated to the cutoff line: year 5), fit2 is for the curve on the right (minimum survival time is at the

"Statistiques avec R"
Dear R users,
I want to share my joy with you. Please see the following
excellent introduction to R "Statistiques avec R " by
Vincent Zoonekynd

In paticular, you can see a lot of fascinating graphics
examples of R from which you can get many hints.
Soryy if this is already well-known, but the CRAN search
did not show nothing with the keyword

Transparent Bands in R
Hello All,
My question is regarding the attached plot. I would like to have multiple
transparent green bands running the length (yaxis) of the plot the width of
which is determined by the green lines at y=0 in the plot. Can you suggest a
way to do it?
For those who can't or are unwilling to download the file the plot is at

add a color band
Hi all,
I would like to ask your help to add a color band (Ι am not sure regarding the right term, this color band at the right of the plot "describing" values with their corresponding color.
For now I have only this code
test<-matrix(data=runif(10000),nrow=100)
plot(test,axes="FALSE")
axis(1,at=c(0,1),labels=c("a","b")) #
but I would like to add

nls start values
I'm using nls to fit periodic gene-expression data to sine waves. I need
to set the upper and lower boundaries, because I do not want any
negative phase and amplitude solutions. This means that I have to use
the "port" algorithm. The problem is, that depending on what start value
I choose for phase, the fit works for some cases, but not for others.
In the example below, the fit works

A question on type="h" plot lines
Dear R users,
I need a produce a plot with a single panel and a few lines on it. Each line represents a different data set. The line types must be "h", i.e. ?histogram? like (or ?high-density?) vertical lines. The problem is that the vertical lines comprising a plot line of type="h" are drawn from the y=0 line to the (x, y) locations. What I need is vertical lines drawn from

Question about the package "MatchIt"
Hi! I'm trying to perform propensity score matching on survey data and so
for each individual observation I have a statistical weight attached. My
question is: is there a way within the package to consider these weights in
the matching procedure?
Thank you very much.

p adjustment on 4thcorner results
Hi all,
This is probably a very simple question but I cannot figure out how to do
it. I run the fourthcorner method with my data and would like to adjust the
p values for multiple comparisons using Holm correction. When I run the
fourthcorner I obtain the results in yellow. What do I need to do to be able
to aply the Holm correction to those p values?

Merge two data frames and find common values and non-matching values
Hi,
I am trying to find a function to match two data frames of different lengths
for one field only.
So, for example,
df1 is:
Name Position location
francesca A 75
cristina B 36
And df2 is:
location Country
75 UK
56 Austria
And I would like to match on "Location" and the output to be something like:
Name Position Location Match
francesca A 75 1
cristina B 36 0
I have tried with

[LLVMdev] Removing inlining of library functions
I am interested in analyzing the bytecode code produced for C files.
By default, inlining of user and library functions (libc) is done. If
I turn off inlining (-disable-inlining in gccas and gccld) then no
inlining is done. I want to be able to inline user code but disallow
library code to be inlined.
In trying to understand the InlineSimple.cpp code, I see that library
functions are

how to plot y-axis on the right of x-axis
Dear List,
I have a richness data distributing across 20 N to 20 S latitude. (120 E-140
E longitude).
I would like to draw the richness in the north hemisphere and a regression
line in the plot
(x-axis: latitude, y-axis: richness in the north hemisphere).
The above demand is done using plot.
Then, south hemisphere richness and regression are required to be generated
