Merging and sorting multiple data.frame
Dear R help, I'm pretty new to R and would be grateful for help. I have 11 data.frames, each with 3 columns of data. Each has the same row.names, however these are not sorted. Please tell me the best way to sort these (by row.names) and secondly the best way to extract data columns from these to form a merged table. Thanks a million Aedin

apply problem
Dear R-Help I am running apply on a data.frame containing factors and numeric columns. It appears to convert are columns into as.character? Does it convert data.frame into matrix? Is this expected? I wish it to recognise numerical columns and round numbers. Can I use another function instead of apply, or should I use a for loop in the case? > summary(xmat) A B

Restrict package to load-only access - prevent attempts to attach it
Hi, I'm developing a package whose API is only meant to be used in other packages via imports or pkg::foo(). There should be no need to attach this package so that its API appears on the search() path. As a maintainer, I want to avoid having it appear in search() conflicts by mistake. This means that, for instance, other packages should declare this package under 'Imports' or

Still having a problem with Rcmd - TMPDIR
Hello R-users: I'm experiencing difficulty in building a package in R 1.4.1 under Windows 2000. When I run Rcmd I get this: F:\r\library>f:\r\bin\rcmd check ringsim Please set TMPDIR to a valid temporary directory F:\r\library>f:\r\bin\rcmd build ringsim Please set TMPDIR to a valid temporary directory This problem was discussed over a year ago - the problem was attributed to a Perl

Question on trying to build R 2.11.1 on Tru64(aka OSF1)
First I tried 'setenv R_SHELL /usr/local/bin/bash', as bash is the weapon of choice for the faculty wishing to use R, then ran ./configure as before. The ./configure output line using as R_SHELL for scripts ... /usr/local/bin/bash would seem to indicate that the R_SHELL environment variable was recognized and acknowledged. However, I got the same build error: gnumake[2]: Entering

virt-sparsify & TMPDIR
I use my "custom" TMPDIR variable with virt-sparsify. I just type: export -p TMPDIR=/mnt/vm/tmpdir I do that for a couple reasons: either my /tmp is on a ramdisk or /tmp is on my (ssd) rootfs and i dont want to "full" my / with the temporally files. Thats said, i was thinking to "ask" OR sending a patch for adding a tmpdir OPTION for virt-sparsify like

missing --vanilla option in INSTALL (PR#9877)
Full_Name: Vilmos Prokaj Version: 2.5.1 OS: windows Submission from: (NULL) (81.183.3.216) I'm not sure that this is really a bug, if not I do not understand why should it be in this way. Most of the scripts used to build and install new packages calls the R program with the --slave --vanilla command line options. In the INSTALL script however we can find the following lines

Problem setting TMPDIR on the fly
Hi folks, I'm having a spot of bother with tempdir(). If I set the environment variable TMPDIR in my shell prior to invoking R it works as expected: > Sys.getenv("TMPDIR") TMPDIR "/eurotempest/tmp/R" > tempdir() [1] "/eurotempest/tmp/R/Rtmp0xY4XD" However if I don't set it prior to entry, but attempt to set it from within

RCMD fails in Windows XP
I have setup R 1.9.1 on my Dell laptop running windows XP. I have installed it to C:\R\rw1091. Rgui runs fine, but Rcmd fails if run with parameters (i.e. install). The windows dialog box cheerfully says "R for Windows front-end has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Running the visual C++ debugger informs me that there is an unhandled

tempdir() containing spaces breaks installing source packages
Hello everyone! Temp paths are used in system2() calls without shQuote() because they are assumed not to contain spaces. On Windows, GetShortPathName() is used to try to ensure that. Unfortunately, sometimes GetShortPathName() silently fails to return a 8.3 file path and gives a full path instead (8.3 file names might be disabled on newer Windows 10 installations, or there may be another

This run was done this AM on my linux box, and older 32 bit Dell optiplex (core 2 duo). The failure message is at the very end. (It's due to be replaced in a couple of weeks.) Re: [PATCH 2/2] builder: consolidate handling of temporary files/dirs
My only comment on this series is it's hard to understand what the ?tmpdir parameter actually does without examining the code. It specifically means that the Curl module writes a security- sensitive file to this directory (or the global tmpdir), and if the caller specifies ?tmpdir then it is their responsibility to remove the tmpdir later -- otherwise the file containing passwords etc is left
