can you library(MASS) with R 1.9.0?
I'm trying to track down a rather critical problem. This happens both on Debian's current unstable as well a from anoncvs built this morning, reinstalling MASS. Is anyone else seeing this or am I just broken and special? 609$ /home/Rdevel/bin/R R : Copyright 2004, The R Foundation for Statistical Computing Version 1.9.0 Under development (unstable) (2004-03-04), ISBN 3-900051-00-3 R

make check failed for R-1.9.0alpha (2004-03-16) when link against Goto's BLAS
Dear all, Has anyone seen the same problem? I tried compiling R-1.9.0 alpha (2004-03-16) on our Opteron box running SUSE Linux ES8. I ran: ./configure --enable-R-shlib --with-blas=goto and got: Source directory: . Installation directory: /usr/local C compiler: gcc -m64 -O2 -g -msse2 -march=k8 -Wall --pedantic C++ compiler: g++ -m64 -O2 -g

cmdscale in package mva (PR#1027)
Full_Name: Laurent Gautier Version: 1.3.0-patched OS: IRIX 6.5 Submission from: (NULL) (130.225.67.199) Hello, The function La.eigen, called by cmdscale in the package mva behaves an unexplicable way (for me). The following lines show what happened. I tried the very same on linux, and it worked fine. >a <- matrix(c(1,2,3,2),3,3) >a [,1] [,2] [,3] [1,] 1 2 3 [2,]

Re: R-help Digest, Vol 2, Issue 26
With the same system configuration (WinNT4 SP6 and 1.7.0), I get such a Dr Watson crash each time I try to use the Change dir... command in the File menu of Rgui.exe. I doesn't seems to happen if I do this immediately after starting R but well if I already did some computation. I don't have any problem by using directly setwd(). build on Irix failed reg-tests
Dear R-devel, Has anyone seen this problem? We tried building R-1.8.1 (and R-1.9.0 alpha 2004-03-17) on an Irix 6.5 box using ./configure CC="cc -64" F77="f77 -64" --with-tcltk=no --enable-R-shlib make check failed because NA + 0 gave NaN instead of NA. I've tried both 32- and 64-bit build, with and without --enable-R-shlib. The same symptom occur in all cases. Any

all(logical(0)) and any(logical(0))
Dear R-help, I was bitten by the behavior of all() when given logical(0): It is TRUE! (And any(logical(0)) is FALSE.) Wouldn't it be better to return logical(0) in both cases? The problem surfaced because some un-named individual called randomForest(x, y, xtest, ytest,...), and gave y as a two-level factor, but ytest as just numeric vector. I thought I check for that in my code by testing

make check-all does not find DESCRIPTION for VR packages
When running make check-all on R-1.9.0beta (2004-03-31) built with pgf77/gcc/g++ on the Opteron (running SLES8), I get four warnings about not finding the DESCRIPTION files for the packages in the VR bundle; e.g., cannot open file `/u1/scratch/R-1.9.0/tests/Packages/VR/spatial/DESCRIPTION' Error in tools:::.checkPackageDepends(dir = "/u1/scratch/R-1.9.0/tests/Packages/VR/spatial")

yet another fast BLAS (from AMD this time)

Lwd ignored when printing on Windows
Dear R-help, Has anyone notice the problem that, on Windows (NT and XP), when printing a graph using the "File -> Print..." menu in the graphics window to print the graph, that line width seemed to be ignored in the printed output? For example, if I make a plot with plot(1:10, type="l", lwd=5), it looks right on screen, but when printed out using the menu, it looks like

performance gap between R 1.7.1 and 1.8.0
Dear R-help, A colleague of mine was running some code on two of our boxes, and noticed a rather large difference in running time. We've so far isolated the problem to the difference between R 1.7.1 and 1.8.0, but not more than that. The exact same code took 933.5 seconds in 1.7.1, and 3594.4 seconds in 1.8.1, on the same box. Basically, the code calls boot() to bootstrap fitting mixture

Suggestion for the reproducibility of R home page figure
Dear R-devel, googling for the single letter R yields R-home page as the firt hit, which is extremly nice. By clicking on the figure you get the code of the "Winner of the R Homepage graphics competition 2004." By copy/pasting in your R console it doesn't work because it is impossible to install the mva package. This is my point. As documented in ONEWS the reason is simple:

R on Linux/Opteron?
Dear R-help: Has anyone tried using R on the the AMD Opteron in either 64- or 32-bit mode? If so, any good/bad experiences, comments, etc? We are considering getting this hardware, and would like to know if R can run smoothly on such a beast. Any comment much appreciated. problem compiling R-1.9.0beta with PGI compilers on amd64
Dear R-devel, I'm trying to compile R-1.9.0beta (2004-03-31) with the PGI compilers (15-day free evaluation: after the 15 days the binaries will stop working). I'm running into some problems, that I hope some can offer pointers. 1. After configure, the FLIBS include /usr/local/lib' --- note the extra '. I had to manually delete it in a couple of places. Multidimensional scaling
A student of mine wants to use R to do some nonmetric multidimensional scaling. According to the R FAQ, there's a package called pcurve that computes multidimensional scaling solutions, but I was not able to locate it the contrib page (I am a Windows user with R version 1.4.1). Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to do nonmetric multidimensional scaling with R, and if so, how? John

problems loading package "nlme" in Debian Sid
Dear All, I apologize if the following has been already asked, but I could not find anything in the archives. I am running Debian Sid (on an Athlon XP), with R 1.8.1.cvs.20040307-1 (it describes itself as "R 1.9.0 experimental" when I fire R up) and I am unable to load the library "nlme" (I apt-getted r-recommended, so the library is on the system) >library(nlme) Error in

Problem when making refman.pdf on WinXP (R 1.7.1)
Dear R-help, Can some one tell me what could be the problem? I downloaded the R-1.7.1 source and try to compile it on WinXP. "make", "make bitmapdll", "make tcl", "make recommended" all ran w/o problem. However, when I ran "make docs", it failed at creating refman.pdf, with no apparent error that I could see. I have attached the log file
