Off topic --- help in locating a source.
Apologies for the off-topic question; as usual I'm trying to draw upon the unparalleled knowledge and sagacity of the r-help list. Please reply off-list if you can help me out. A collaborator of mine found a formula we need, on sheets which he had photocopied out of a book, some years ago. He cannot remember which book (he's getting to be as senile and forgetful as I am, poor bloke!).

Off topic -- when is max min = min max?
This question has little or nothing to do with R; as usual I'm simply hoping to take advantage of the great depth of knowledge and expertise in the R community. Anyone who is interested in replying should send email directly to me (rolf at math.unb.ca) and not to this list. To get to my question: In a two person zero-sum game, the value of the game to the row player is v_r = max min

Updating a linear model
My google search for Plackett's Algorithm didn't return too much except that Plackett's algorithm appears to be useful in Control Theory - it is elaborated as "Plackett's algorithm for on-line recursive least squares estimation". Sounds something like what I want. I am looking at developing a user modelling type app (new data points coming in and wanting to dynamically

general linear model and generalized linear model
Dear friends, I searched the R site and found a lot of results on general linear model and generalized linear model , and i was confused by them. Here, I only want to get some concise answers on the following questions and i'll study it by your hints: 1. Which function(package) could be used to fit the general linear model ? 2. Which function(package) could be used to fit the generalized

Stats help with calculating between and within subject variance and confidence intervals
Hello. I'm trying to find a way in R to calculate between and within subject variances and confidence intervals for some analytical method development data. I've found a reference to a method in Burdick, R. K. & Graybill, F. A. 1992, Confidence Intervals on variance components, CRC Press. This example is for Balanced Data confidence interval calculation from Pg 62. The data are

Graybill-Bowden confidence band
Hi R folks, Anyone know how I can compute the alpha significance point for a distribution described as "the maximum absolute value of k Student t- variables, each based on v degrees of freedom and having a common pairwise correlation coefficient rho"? In my case rho is known to be 0. Or, more to the point, anyone know how to compute a Graybill-Bowden confidence band around my

(Off topic.) Game theory.
This has nothing to do with R as such; I'm simply trying to exploit the vast resource of knowledge and expertise that resides in the R community. For my sins, I am teaching a course on Game Theory this term. Game Theory I know from ***nothing***. I am trying to learn the subject as I go along, staying perhaps half a step in front of the students. I am having considerable difficulty with

(Off topic) Limit question solved.
A colleague here at U.N.B. has provided a counter example for me. So the conjecture (that the existance of the ``product limit'' is implied by the existance of the limits involving the first three powers) is false. If anyone is interested in the details, they should contact me off-list. My apologies for confusing everyone with my initial mis-statement of the problem. cheers,

Slightly off-topic --- distribution name.
I've built R functions to ``effect'' a particular distribution, and would like to find out if that distribution is already ``known'' by an existing name. (I.e. suppose it were called the ``Melvin'' distribution --- I've built dmelvin, pmelvin, qmelvin, and rmelvin as it were, but I need a real name to substitute for melvin.) The distribution is really just a toy

R-beta: Some General Questions
I would like to introduce R to the statistical community at large in the Washington, D.C. area. I will be giving a presentation, a part of which will be devoted to a discussion of R, before the Washington Statistical Society (WSS) on 15 October. Anyone residing in the D.C. area is welcomed to come. Also, if a developer should have plans of being Washington and would

link() problem with dovecot-imapd
I'm having a few problems with dovecot-imapd (installed from debian unstable) and am after some much needed help, all is set up and configured, except for this final problem of when I try and move or copy a message from one Maildir to another. I have the option "maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = no" in the the dovecot.conf file but it still seems to be trying to link() the file

PR#1132.
Just now I again had occasion to want nested describe lists in a documentation file. I found that the bug which I reported on 18 October, 2001 still persists. I checked on the bug report at the R web page, and found that the notes say ``Not a problem in R 1.4.0 (2001-12-08)''. Well, it's still a problem for me --- using R 1.4.1. FW: computing a p-value ...
Thanks to Rolph Turner and Jason Turner ... I guess I was too excited about getting back on the list after an absense of several years ... I'll be a little more thoughtful about the problem before posting next time, and a little less trigger-happy with the "Send" e-mail button. Never-the-less, much appreciated. - Mohamed -----Original Message----- From: Rolf Turner

OT: 1gigabit Nics
Begging indulgence of the list - asking here because due to the higher likelyhood of getting an answer... I have an application that often loses connection from one machine to another when one (or more) of the machines has particular brands of 1gig nics, but which runs rock solid when on 10meg nics and some 1 gig nics. The application senses (falsely) that the connection has been shut down

loading shared libraries at startup
Dear people, I compiled a bit of C code into a shared library cftpR.so, and load it into R at runtime using > dyn.load("cftpR.so") This works fine, however when I put .First <- function() { dyn.load("/home/faheem/research/cftp/cftpR.so") } (using absolute path names; also tried with just dyn.load("cftpR.so")), into my .Rprofile to load the library at

very beginner's question
Begging the list's indulgence, an extremely dumb beginner's question. I've got 24 months' worth of numbers - ranging from 2 events per month, to 66 events per month. I want to take a stab at making a reasonable guess as to what the next year's data would be, approximately, i.e., based on the 24 months I've got, I want to be able to tell someone: "the 12 months after
