NIS+ support
A small contribution :)
I downloaded and installed 2.0.4b and compiled with NIS+ support since the
fixed configuration for it was one of the new features. All worked fine,
except that I found I couldn't change passwords. It turned out to be not
a configuration error, but that some of the NIS+ routines hadn't been
implemented yet. So I did that :)
So far my mods seem to be working, but I

HEAD and 2.0.4b - interworking?
Did I understand from something Jeremy said recently that a recommended
mode of operation for those wishing to try the full PDC support might
be:
1. all file servers running production version (currently 2.0.4b)
2. single PDC machine running HEAD branch
in order to get the stability and performance of the production version
while still being able to use the latest PDC functionality?

SMB/NMBD configuration troubles.
Folks,
I am stumped!
I have followed every tech tip I could find and I am still
unable to complete my SMB installation. Specifically, I fail
Test 4 and Tests 9 and 10. I believe the problem has
something to do with the NMBD configuration. Below are the
parameters of our system.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

authorizedkeys2 for a DHCP based client
Dear all,
My Problem: I cannot get authorizedkeys2 working such that I do not need
to supply a password.
My Configuration:
A Linux server with OpenSSH2.9p1 and a fixed IP-Address.
A Linux client with OpenSSH2.9p1, DHCP based, so altering names, but
the hostname is set no to be adjusted to the DHCP-address. So, the
canonical hostname is not the same as the one which is

Data Mining in Europe, please advise
Our CEO, Dr. Dan Steinberg, is planning to visit Europe in May. He
would like the opportunity to introduce statisticians (and statistically
minded people) to data mining, data mining applications and to forefront
data mining tools. Our algorithms are probably familiar to many
statisticians (CART, MARS, MART, TreeNet and RandomForests), although it
isn't necessary to be a statistician to

mount /dev/hda6 ext3
Dear all,
I followed the instructions found on
http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/ext3/ext3-usage.html
to convert / on several of my boxes to ext3.
Strange to me, on some boxes it perfectly worked while on others it
didn't. One of the differences found is that on the ok-boxes
mount reports:
/dev/hda3 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
/* Settings:
cat /etc/fstab

addtable2plot(plotrix)
Dear List
adding a table to a plot using addtable2plot(plotrix) does not seem to
work when using a logarithmic axis. The table is then reduced to one
line. Is there an argument to indicate that a log-scale is used, or an
alternative to add a bunch of information to a plot?
I'm using R 2.6.1 on WinXP SP2.
thanks

OpenSSHd: PATHs in configuration files
Dear all,
is it possible to specify the default paths in the appropriate
configuration of the Daemon ?
If not, wouldn't it make sense to include that feature as the
configuration files get parsed anyway ?
What do you mean ?
Kind regards,

config.h.in
Dear developers,
today, I cvs'ed the newest openSSH. Unfortunately, the config.h.in file
was missing. I copied it from the tar-ball. Was this my fault or a
problem in the CVS ?
Thanks for the answer,
Lukas

all subsets for glm
Dear R-users,
For the purpose of model selection I am looking for a way to
exhaustively (and efficiently) search for best subsets of predictor
variables for a logistic regression model.
I am looking for something like leaps() but that works with glm.
Any feedback highly appreciated.

Major Internet disruption to/from ETH Zurich...
The big Swiss University network provider has been having severe problems
for about 8 hours now
--- particularly the cross-atlantic connection seems broken ---
Many of you will get R-help or ESS-help E-mails very much delayed.
Hope things start working soon by themselves.

round(1.5) = round(2.5) = 2?
Dear R-users
with a bit of grief I had to repeat an extensive analysis because I
did not suspect (and therefore did not read the documentation) that
round was implemented as "for rounding off a 5, the IEC 60559 standard
is expected to be used, 'go to the even digit'", resulting in
round(1.5) = 2
round (2.5) = 2.
As a non-mathematician I am both puzzled and intrigued by

Improved HTML Reporting Functions
Hello Everyone,
First, I'd like to appologize for the e-mail confirmation that was
attached to my last message. It was entirely unintentional.
I've attached a set of R files that make writing HTML reports very easy.
I basically combined the HTML functions I wrote previously, David Dahl's
xtable from CRAN, and then wrote a series of wrapper functions to
automagically write the

We are doing digital recording over a 100 Mb/s switched network to a

some performance data. I just want to be sure, to not overlook some
important aspect in my experimental setup. Let me explain in short what

Remove columns by name data[-c("subj","drug")]
Is there an easy way to remove data frame columns
by name instead of by index? The following gives
the idea
remove<-c("subj","drug")
data[-remove]
I found a solution with a few evals and substitutes,
similar to that used in reshapeLong, but there must
be an easier way out.
