Support for foreign keys in Migrations
Is there any work being done to add support for defining foreign keys in ActiveRecord Migrations? If not is it something that people would find useful or do most people here believe in the "Application Database" style over the "Integration Database" style [1] as defined by Fowler? I''d love to see support for foreign keys in Migrations. For selfish reasons

aligning Ferret''s IndexSearcher.search API with Lucene''s
Recently I''ve been revisiting some of my search code. With a greater understanding of how Java Lucene implements its search methods, I realized that one level of abstraction is not present in the Ferret classes/methods. Here are the relevant method signatures: Ferret''s search methods: in Ferret::Index::Index: search(query, options = {}) -> returns a TopDocs

Not wishing to instigate a DB war, but...
Can I get some opinions on which free DB to use with rails for a virtual server that will eventually be doing lots of heavy database lifting? Not a lot of heavy duty querying per se. Think multiple simultaneous forums and blog sites and the like. I know each of the different DB possibilities such as MySQL and PostgreSQL has plus points and minus points. I''m particularly interested

Program logic behind Ruby On Rails
Hi, I''m a newbie in both Ruby and Ruby on Rails. I finished the Ruby on Rail Tutorial on Todo list and it was great. But, now I''m trying to understand the logic behind it, that is something that is not obvious on how each one of them ties together. Is there a flowchart that shows how the inner working of Ruby on Rails? In another words, let''s suppose we consider the

find_all_by deprecated?
Is find_all_by deprecated and/or find_first_by for 2.0.2? If not, what is actually deprecated? just find_all(..) and find_first()? Thanks for clearing this up. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. FK constraints overrated?
Hello folks, I use to think that a relational databases without foreign keys constraints enforced strictly by the RDBMS were no good, piece of crap, data junk. However, I''ve also learned the hard way that FKs constraints imposes serious difficulties when moving data around, specially between different DBs, or for loading test data or for upgrading DBs schemas, or for porting DBs

Serialized object behaves weird
Hi! I got a class named EinsatzFilter which I serialized to session. Before saving to session it works afterwards I keep getting the message: "undefined method `to_s'' for #<Person:0x38c6ab8>". "Person" is a from ActiveRecord::Base inherited class. Code: class EinsatzFilter include ApplicationHelper attr_reader :personen, :monat, :projekte, :kunde

Bind Variables in Active Record
OK, I have some basic functionality to support bind variables, it appears to work with the ''old'' %s style too. I''ve altered sanitize_conditions in activerecord/lib/active_record/base.rb to check whether bind variables are in the statement (/\?/). If they are, replace all the ?s to escaped values from the arguments array. else santize and expand. There are a few

Mocking, changing method interfaces and integration tests
Suppose we have a method ''foo'' which internally uses another method ''bar''. Being good BDDers we mock out the ''bar'' method. After all, we only want to spec the ''foo'' method - actually running the ''bar'' method means slower, less maintainable and brittler specs. That''s why we <3 mocking,

[OT] Best Blog + Wiki opinions?
Hello all, I''m looking for suggestions for integrated Blog + Wiki (Bliki) apps. I''d prefer Rails, I want to hear opinions on all options! I''ve browsed through W:Bliki <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bliki>. Nothing in that list is immediately compelling. This is for my wife, who is not a technologist, and has a need to create a information-centric website.

Building a conditions clause (for find) of multiple optional params?
I want to be able to find items according to various params - category_id, member_id, type_id, rating, etc. What I have now is something like: if(@params[''category_id'']) @items=Item.find(:all, :conditions=>["category_id=?", @params[''category_id'']) elsif(@params[''category_id''] and @params[''member_id''])

Should counter_cache fields be saved in the database?
As far as I can tell, the counter_cache option on a belongs_to model doesn''t actually save anything in the database. For example, I have the following models: class Parent < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :children, :conditions => "deleted_at IS NULL" end class Child < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :parent, :counter_cache => true end With the following

validate uniqueness of two fields
I have Proposals and Members and Members can vote for a proposal only once. So, I have "Vote belongs_to :member, :proposal", but to make sure a member only votes once, I want to make sure that there isn''t a vote in the db with that member_id and proposal_id. I can just put the appropriate find in a vote.valid? but I wanted to make sure I wasn''t missing a nice rails

bogus find_all in Rails 0.14.1
I have the following statement cl = ChatEvent.find_all("ev_type <> #{t} and chat_id = #{@params [:chat_id]} order by created_at") which produces the following error: #42000You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ''order by created_at)'' at line 1: SELECT * FROM

find_all order question
How does one properly get find_all to grab the data from the DB table ordered by a specific column? For example: @anglers = Angler.find_all This code gets all the angler records and they are sorted in order of the id field which is of course set as a primary key in the DB (mysql). I''d really like to pull the data from the DB sorted in the order of another field, for example

AJAX form inside table - error
Hello, I need to put an AJAX, form such that it is inside a table, and spans across few rows. But, what I am noticing is that, while submitting the form, the data in the fields is not submitted. If I move the form outside the table or inside a cell, things work OK, but not when the form is inside the table and spans few rows. This problem is only with AJAX forms, regular forms work perfect. I

A really newbie question
Hi, I have been playing around with Ruby after reading so much about it, and so I started tweaking with auto generated scaffold. But it seems like I must be missing something, can someone else please help me take a look and give me a couple pointers? In short I was trying to make a class User that has a method addupdate with 2 parameters (alias and email) which would either update the

Overide the default find_all
Hi, In my model i want to overide the default find all for sorting purposes. Is this possible or can this only be done in the control or by adding a custom method in the model. def self.find_all() @contents = Content.find(:all, :order => ''pos, position_id'') end -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.
