Help : stablereg parameter interpretation
Dear all, I am having difficulty interpreting the parameter estimates from the stablereg function. Specifically I am trying to keep things simple to start with by using stablereg to fit a normal distribution to a simulated data set from that distribution (in order to understand the way that stablereg reports parameter estimates). I cannot work out the scale on which the dispersion parameter (some

sshd leaking processes
Hello, I am experiencing a problem with OpenSSH_4.3p2 Debian-8, OpenSSL 0.9.8c 05 Sep 2006 I have a tool which I use to generate command lines for end-end encryption through firewalls, following directions from an old discussion on this mailing list (thanks btw). It gives me something like this: ssh -p 47774 localhost -o "ProxyCommand=ssh -v -v vds5.dedi.blackcatnetworks.co.uk -- 'nc

browser() misbehavior ?
Under v1.6.2, Windows NT4 OS, when a function contains an execution error and I have placed browser() in inside the function body, the call to browser is ignored. A brief example to illustrate: > foo <- function(x) { + y <- x ^ 2 + browser() + foo2(x) ## Intentional error + x ^ 3 + } > > foo(30) Called from: foo(30) Browse[1]> Error in foo(30) : couldn't find

axes that meet
R v. 1.7.1, Windows 2000. A particular journal wants me to provide scatter plots with no box, but with axes that meet in the lower left corner. It seems as though there must be an easy way of doing this, but my reading the help on plot.default, axis, and box have not provided any clues. I would be most appreciative of any feedback. Thank you, Hank Stevens Dr. Martin Henry H. Stevens,

Missing data
Hi all, I'm looking for a contributed package that can provide a detailed account of missing data patterns and perhaps also provide imputation procedures, such as mean imputation or hot deck imputation and the like. Is there anything out there? Thanks in advance, David -- =========================================================================== David Kaplan, Ph.D. Professor

goodness of fitting for a mixed distribution
Hi all! i have done a fitting of experimental data using optim function and setting up my mixed distribution logliklehood (it is a linear combination of a normal and a weibull distribution). How can i test the goodness of fit? I want to be able to say that my distribution fit the data at 90%, 95% or so on.... thanks in advance, nelson

Autogenerated png, bitmap images
I have two questions - 1. I am trying to create R png graphs via cron. I have this part working using Xvfb (X virtual frame buffer). One problem that I have, though, is that all the fonts on my graphs get messed up. Anybody have any nija R commands to make all fonts look great? Anybody have any idea how to fix this? So far, no luck on Solaris or Linux making the Xvfb fonts look good. I was

par(new=T) with xyplot
I know I should not mix base plotting functions with grid/lattice functions, but I have used a "quick-and-dirty" trick of par(new=T) in the past for annotating a trellis-drawn graph in various versions of S-PLUS. The sequence goes something like this: > windows(width = 5, height = 5, pointsize = 10) # open up the device > xyplot(y ~ x) > par(new=T) > xyplot(y2 ~ x) >

barplot with varaible-width bars
I would like to produce a bar plot with varying-width bars. Here is an example to illustrate: ww <- c(417,153,0.0216,0.0065,556,256,0.0162,0.0117, + 726,379,0.0358,0.0501,786,502,0.0496,0.0837, + 892,591,0.0785,0.0795) yy<-t(t(array(ww,c(2,10)))) barplot(yy[,2*1:5],las=1,space=c(.1,.5),beside=T) produces a barplot of 5 pairs of bars that are of equal width

Garbled menu on ISOLINUX
We have a system that is designed with no VGA port, graphics card, or keyboard, only a serial console. We're trying to boot a Linux via ISOLINUX. The problem is that when ISOLINUX comes up, the screen is usually garbled. Not always; sometimes it's intact, sometimes it's completely blank. When it is garbled, it is NOT the garbled text of a wrong baud rate. Rather, it looks like

Linux Standalone Server Suggestions for R
Hi All, My group is looking for any suggestions on what to purchase to achieve the most powerful number crunching system that $50k can buy. The main application that will be used is R so input on what hardware benefits R most will be appreciated. The requirements are that it be a single standalone server (i.e. not a cluster solution), and it that must be able to run unix/linux. If

Lost graph contents using Copy as metafile
Dear colleagues: I use R 1.9.0 on Windows XP. One of my common tasks is to get R graphs into Word documents. A open windows() device, almost always trellis.device() for me, provides great convenience with the right-click shortcut menu item "Copy as metafile". I typically have the History > Recording feature turned on as well. Since upgrading to 1.9.0, I have experienced an

panel.axis() & grid/lattice settings
Hello, I wish to customize the tick marks and labels of axes in panels produced by high-level lattice functions, namely xyplot. I know I can use the scales argument to specify values for rot, cex, etc. in the top-level call. However, I am interested in determining values for cex and rot based on the current panel / viewport and device. More specifically, I would like to make adjustments when

remote access
Hello! I have such trouble: I like R, but often I don't have administrator permissions to install R on some (not mine) computers. Could you give me shell on any server with R installed in order to apply R without installing it (simply with PuTTY). Great thanks! -- Best regards, Altshuler Eugeny

question related to S-Plus
Dear r-help, Having used S-Plus for many years, it has been suggested to me that I could benefit from learning R. A question to this end, though. Would all of my existing S-Plus arrays, functions, and so on have to be re-created from scratch in R, or is there a way to copy them into the .Rdata directory? The answer to this question has major implications for the extent to which R is

compress and max upload size?
I am using mongrel_cluster with mod_proxy_balancer and would like to enable compression (assuming it improves throughtput) and limit file size upload. I configured mod_deflate and LimitRequestSize in Apache, but in my trials looks like the proxied calls bypass those directives (the conf goes below). Is there a way to get this? -- fxn # Adapt this .example locally, as usual. # # To be

Space between axis label and tick labels
I'm writing an publication in two column format and need to shrink some plots. After increasing the axis labels it does not look nice at all. The y-axis label and tick labels almost touch each other and the x-axis tick labels expand into the plot instead of away from it. Is there a better way than "cex" to control the: 1) font size of axis and tick labels 2) font thickness 3)
