"R is not a validated software package.."
Dear All, discussing with a statistician of a pharmaceutical company I received this answer about the statistical package that I have planned to use: As R is not a validated software package, we would like to ask if it would rather be possible for you to use SAS, SPSS or another approved statistical software system. Could someone suggest me a 'polite' answer? TIA Giovanni -- dr.

R, clinical trials and the FDA
I hope that Marc doesn't mind, but I felt that part of his recent post was important enough to deserve it's own subject line rather then being lost in a 60-msg-long thread... Use of R in clinical trials
Dear all, There have been a variety of discussions on the R list regarding the use of R in clinical trials. The following post from the STATA list provides an interesting opinion regarding why SAS remains so popular in this arena: http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2008-01/msg00098.html Regards, -Cody Hamilton

21 CFR Part 11 Compliance and R
I have used S-PLUS, R, MATLAB and SAS for many years, and I am actually quite happy to use any of these four languages. The reason may in part involve my using the various languages for the purposes to which they seem most suited. Hence there are many things for which I would not use SAS or MATLAB, but for which I would greatly prefer to use R instead. On the other hand ( to take one of a

SAS and R on multiple operating systems
Hi, This is not meant to be critical of R, but is intended as a possible source for improvements to R. SAS needs the competition. I am reasonably knowledgeable about R SAS-(all products including IML) SAS and R run on Windows(all flavors) UNIX(all flavors) Apple OSs Does R run on natively (no emulation)? We have quite a few users on these systems VAX-VMS Z-OS (mainframe) MVS VM/CMS(IBM)

R vs. Splus in Pharma/Devices Industry
Following up to some extent on Friday's discussion regarding the 'validation' of R, could I ask the list group's opinion on possible advantages of R over Splus from a pharma/devices perspective? I wish to exclude the obvious price difference, which doesn’t seem to carry as much weight as I would have thought. Besides, I have noticed many former Splus users gravitating towards R,

DNS problem when adding new record using samba-tool
Hi all, I am setting up a new AD server with Samba 4.1.11 from the FreeBSD ports. I struggle with the internal DNS. I add a new CNAME record but it does not show up properly. I gave the AD domain a new DNS domain (domain.fda) and the server the name samba4.domain.fda. I am using the internal DNS, and a forwarder to a bind server in the same network. After the AD provision I have this here

"could not find function" error in "R CMD check"
Hi, All: What might cause "R CMD check" to report, "could not find function" for a function that has long been in the 'fda' package? Both Jim Ramsay in Ottawa, Canada, and I in San Jose, CA, get this same error. I replicated it with a fresh, anonymous checkout from R-Forge (svn checkout svn://svn.r-forge.r-project.org/svnroot/fda). With this, I did

The package is under SVN control, and I reverted to a version that passed "R CMD check", without eliminating the error. R and FDA trials
Yesterday I just noticed the new document on R and regulatory aspects for biomedical research posted at http://www.r-project.org/doc/R-FDA.pdf Coming from an institution that performs a large number of clinical trials for FDA and being an advocate of R myself, I have found that the following issues usually come up when discussing the use of R for FDA trials: 1. column extraction by name ?
I have a data frame (df) with colums x, y and z. e.g. df <- data.frame(x = sample(4), y = sample(4), z = sample(4)) I can extract column z by: df$z or df[3] I can also extract columns x,y by: df[1:2] or by df[-3]. Is it possible to extract x,y columns in a "symbolic" fashion i.e. by equivalent of df[-z] (which is illegal) ??? Or alternativeley, is there an equivalent of
