Understanding nonlinear optimization and Rosenbrock's banana valley function?
GENERAL REFERENCE ON NONLINEAR OPTIMIZATION?
What are your favorite references on nonlinear optimization? I like
Bates and Watts (1988) Nonlinear Regression Analysis and Its
Applications (Wiley), especially for its key insights regarding
parameter effects vs. intrinsic curvature. Before I spent time and
money on several of the refences cited on the help pages for "optim",

Eigenvectors and values in R and SAS
Hi,
I was wondering if function eigen() does something different from the
function call eigen() in SAS.
I'm in the process of translating a SAS code into a R code and the values of
the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of a square matrix came out to be different
from the values in SAS.
I would also appreciate it if someone can explain the difference in simple
terms. I'm pretty new to both

eliminate t() and %*% using crossprod() and solve(A,b)
Hi
I have a square matrix Ainv of size N-by-N where N ~ 1000
I have a rectangular matrix H of size N by n where n ~ 4.
I have a vector d of length N.
I need X = solve(t(H) %*% Ainv %*% H) %*% t(H) %*% Ainv %*% d
and
H %*% X.
It is possible to rewrite X in the recommended crossprod way:
X <- solve(quad.form(Ainv, H), crossprod(crossprod(Ainv, H), d))
where quad.form() is a little

Hello,
I have a short question about the prcomp function. First I cite the
associated help page (help(prcomp)):

positive semi-definite matrix
I have a covariance matrix that is not positive semi-definite matrix and I
need it to be via some sort of adjustment. Is there any R routine or
package to help me do this?
Thanks, Roger

Charset
I have upgraded on my debian server from samba 2.2.3 (stable ) to samba
3.0rc4 (unstable).
The only problem that I have on my PDC is that italian character as ? (a') ?
(u') etc. are non treated as they should and this can cause profiles non to
load correctly.
What should I do?

Matrix inverse
I haven't found a function that directly calculates the matrix inverse, does it exist? Otherwise what would be the fastest way to do it?

matrix bending
Dear All,
I was wondering whether any one knows of a matrix bending function in
R that can turn non-positive definite matrices into the nearest
positive definite matrix. I was hoping there would be something akin
to John Henshall's flbend program
(http://agbu.une.edu.au/~kmeyer/pdmatrix.html), which allows the
standard errors of the estimated matrix elements to be considered in

Symbolic computation in R-solving system of equations
Hi,
To my knowledge, Ryacas can do symbolic computation in R, like
Mathematica or Maple.
I wonder if it (or any other R package) can solve symbolically a system
of equations? I have a system of four equations in four variables
(non-linear, but not very hard to solve) and wonder if Ryacas or any other
package can do it. I do not find the solution in Ryacas. Can it find a
symbolic solution

superimpose histogram on biplot
Hi all,
I've been trying to figure out how to superimpose a histogram on a
biplot that shows the relative contribution of each axis. I have
been using the NIPALS function (http://biomserv.univ-lyon1.fr/~dray/
files/softwares/nipals.R) to run principal component analyses. Here
is a toy example.

how to change theme in rails 3.2.7
I''m using rails 3.2.7.
I have few themes in my public/themes folder.
For example in my theme-1 folder
there is one index.html + style.css + few images (if required)
At the time of registration user will select one theme. Now when the
user will login that theme will display. I will use handle

My main problem is that how

solving cubic/quartic equations non-iteratively -- comparisons
Hi,
I'm responding to a post about finding roots of a cubic or quartic equation non-iteratively. One obviously could create functions using the explicit algebraic solutions. One post on the subject noted that the square-roots in those solutions also require iteration, and one post claimed iterative solutions are more accurate than the explicit solutions.
This post, however, is about

Matrix eigenvectors in R and MatLab

Is there anyone who knows why I get different eigenvectors when I run

the same vectors as MatLab?
