Multiv / hierclust / plclust
I use hierclust (hierarchical clustering) in multiv package. In the
documentation it is said that plclust (plotting a dendrogram) is
available in S-plus. Can I find it anywhere (I have searched through
http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/S and found only quotations of plclust in
multiv) or is it only part of the S package (which I don't have)?
Thanks

question about hierclust {multiv}
my major is bioinformatics, and i'm trying to cluster ( agglomerate
the closest pari of observations ) in R.
i have already got my own similarities metric, but do not know how to
clust it based on similarities instead of dissimilarities.
since the help document of hierclust mentions the parameter "sim",
which seems good to me, but it doesn't appear in the code of
hierclust()

memory issue trying to solve too large a problem using hclust
Hi, all.
I'm trying to cluster 12,500 objects using hclust from package mva. The
distance matrix takes up nearly 600 MB. The distance matrix also needs to
be copied when being passed to the fortran routine that actually does the
clustering (it's modified during the clustering), so that's 1200 MB. I'm
actually on a machine with 2.5 GB of memory (and nothing else running), so I

Downloading Package
Hello,
I am a beginner in using R so my question could seem very simple. I would
like to download the package multiv to do multivariate data analysis. The
package I download seems to be a file meant for UNIX and I am using a Window
OS. How could I download and install correctly this file?
Thanks a lot

writing several command line in R console
Hi R lovers
I would like to know how to step to the next line in the R console editor
without breaking the continuity of my code
more clearly : if for example I write a function, so far i have to write the
all code inside on the same line wich may become obscure as the function is
more and more complex.
I would like to do like in the example of the manuels:

cannot use fanny in package cluster (PR#8830)
Full_Name: Guan-Hua Huang
Version: 2.0.1
OS: Linux
Submission from: (NULL) (140.113.114.123)
I install the package cluster by using install.packages("cluster"). After
install it, it runs fine for function clara, but it does not work for function
fanny. I did the following things:
library(cluster)
set.seed(21)
x <- rbind(cbind(rnorm(10, 0, 0.5), rnorm(10, 0, 0.5)),

agnes clustering and NAs
Hello,
In the documentation for agnes in the package 'cluster', it says that NAs are allowed, and sure enough it works for a small example like :
> m <- matrix(c(
1, 1, 1, 2,
1, NA, 1, 1,
1, 2, 2, 2), nrow = 3, byrow = TRUE)
> agnes(m)
Call: agnes(x = m)

Problem with cluster analysis
I'm sorry if this is a trivial question.
My system is R 6.33 on Win98 with basic libraries plus the "cluster"
library.
I'm using "agnes" and "hclust" functions to perform cluster analysis on
big data sets.
Looking at the documentation for libraries "mva" and "cluster" I can't
find out a function like S-Plus "cutree" to get

Clustering Question
Hi group,
My case has N physicians with each seeing M patients.
One physician could have seen a group of patients, or,
a patient could have been seen by multiple number of
physicians. In order words, there are overlaps. Now,
I have the following NxM matrix
Patient#1 Patient#2 Patient#3 .......
Patient#m
Physician#1 1 0 1 .......

Transformation of dissimilarity or distance matrix
Dear List,
is there an elegant (or even not elegant) way how to transform
dissimilarity or distance matrix A
(or, in general, arbitrary symmetrical matrix) by transposition of rows and
columns into a form
closest to "block diagonal" matrix B?
The matrix A is adjusted the following way
A[A<epsilon] <-0 #(epsilon is given "small" number)
B: (in its ideal form)

high memory allocation
Hello,
I have trouble with my cluster analysis using package "cluster". "diana" and "agnes" both seem to try to allocate memory directly, so I can not use virtual memory of my Windows2000 operation system.
I do have 320 MB of memory. But they claim about 600 MB. Do I have a chance to do the analysis with my amount of memory.
Thanks for all comments, I did not find a

Clustering algorithms don't find obvious clusters
I have a directed graph which is represented as a matrix on the form
0 4 0 1
6 0 0 0
0 1 0 5
0 0 4 0
Each row correspond to an author (A, B, C, D) and the values says how many
times this author have cited the other authors. Hence the first row says
that author A have cited author B four times and author D one time. Thus the
matrix represents two groups of authors: (A,B) and (C,D) who cites

Distance matrix by cosine?
Hello,
a. is there a possibility to obtain a distance matrix with the cosine between vectors?? hclust, hierclust, dist will not work and seem to be hard to extend.
b. if there is not: Is the cosine between vectors implemented somewhere?
Thanks for all hints and advice!
