validate method doesn''t recognize another instance method
All,
I am attempting to do some custom validation on my object.
Here is my validate method:
protected
def validate
puts "Do I have the target_list_ids method? " +
self.methods.include?(''target_list_ids'').to_s
if target_list_ids.nil? || target_list_ids.length == 0
errors.add_to_base("You must choose at least one target list for
this job")

errors.add_to_base
What are the limitations on using:
errors.add_to_base
to display errors in views?
I have tried for days to add errors from my object.rb and they never get
displayed.
class Keyword < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of(:name, :message => "Name is required.")
validates_uniqueness_of(:name, :message => "This name is already in

Custom error messages
On a model I have the following simple validator:
def validate
unless name && name =~ /^\w+$/
errors.add_to_base("Name is missing")
end
end
I would like to display a custom message on my views, without using the
helper <%= error_messages_for "table" %>
Where the messages from errors.add_to_base are stored and how to access
them in the views?

Active Record Attributes using Dot Notation doesn''t work
I have been having some problems with accessing active record attributes
using dot notation. Some attributes work, others do not. The attribute
exists in the database (it is a smallint). Using breakpointer and IRB I
can see it in the active record:
irb(#<Transition:0x3900f48>):012:0> self
self
=> #<Transition:0x3900f48

Help with validation
I am trying to write some simple code post a form, update the database
and do some validation. I have 2 problems:
1) The validation fails but I can''t get hold of the error message
2) I can''t get the form to redisplay the previously entered data for the
user to correct.
I have 2 controllers:
user and holiday.
A user can request a new holiday by filling in a form. I have a

habtm, multi select, and validation
Greetings -
I''m trying to find the most efficient, "Rails" way to solve the
following problem. It''s in two parts, but I think the solution is
somewhat related:
I have Recipe and Category model related by HABTM. I would like to
1.) Validate the *number* of categories associated with a recipe, say a
minimum of 1 and a max of 3. (So validates_associated will not

text_field_with_auto_complete doesn|t work in edit/show view
Hi,
I am using the autocomplete for text field with ''Scriptaculous'' and it
works perfectly fine in "new" action.
All the examples I see are only for the "new" action.
But doesn''t default to the selected value/text in "edit/show" action? Is
this possible or should I write custom code for "edit/show" action?
Thanks, Hari

validate() with has_many association
I''m creating a simple portfolio site for a painter. I have a painting
and an image model with following relationship:
Painting
has_many :images
Image
belongs_to :painting
On the edit screen the user can edit the Painting data as well as upload
pictures for a thumbnails and full size image. The Image model extracts
filename, width, and height from the uploaded file, saves those

Either/Or Validation
How would I use validations to ensure I either received a blank value or
a ten digit number?
If I set validates_length_of :field, :in => 0..10 then that would allow
any value in-between. The allow_nil => true option does not seem to
work.
I''ve also tried using this with some combination of
validates_numericality_of but cannot get it to work.
Any help would be greatly

How to change the error message easy way
validates_presence_of :fname
results in the error message
"Fname can''t be blank".
What I want is "First Name can''t be blank".
I could do this
def validate
errors.add_to_base("First Name can''t be blank") if fname.blank?
end
I find this clunky and I have to put everyrhing in the validate method. Is
there an easy to get what I want.

Active Record: Can it auto-create database tables for you?
Hi,
Just get started with Rails and I''m trying to read ahead and find out
whether Active Record supports auto-creation of database tables for you?
Is this supported, or is the concept that you write your own database
DDL to do this?
Thanks

before_create question
I have the following models: User, Registration, Event.
User has_many Registration, Event has_many Registration, and
Registration belongs_to User and Registration. So far, so good.
There''s a registration deadline on a Event though, a few days before
the Event occurs.
So, I have this:
class Registration < AR
def before_create

Active Record save doesn''t save! (more detail - is this a bug?)
I got it to work by changing
scheduled_end_date= nil
to
self.scheduled_end_date= nil.
I believe these statements should be equivilent.
I don''t know Ruby/Rails well enough to know when, if or why that should
matter. Can someone educate me please? I want to believe this framework is
ready for production work, but silently dropping data is a very big
problem. I expect that I''ve

Reading Model data before update
Hi all,
here is the challenge:
I have this validation method, that basically prevents an object which
billed = true to be updated:
def before_update
if read_attribute(:billed)
errors.add_to_base(''This service has already been billed for'')
end
!read_attribute(:billed)
end
The above code does not work in case I do something like:

The {{key}} interpolation syntax in I18n messages is deprecated...
All,
Has anyone seen this - I am getting the following deprecation warning when
running my functional tests under rails 2.3.8 (just moved an app from 2.3.4
up to 2.3.8 in prep to move to Rails 3 --- if you think this problem is
solved in Rails 3 then let me know):
The {{key}} interpolation syntax in I18n messages is deprecated. Please use

Active Record save doesn''t save! (or throw an exception)
PLEASE help me - this is making me insane.
Can anyone suggest any reasons for this behavior? It occured previously,
then went away and is now back.
In Task.rb (where task is an active record subclass)
def clear_schedule
puts "clearing schedule for task"
scheduled_end_date= nil #reset the
scheduled end date

Model Validation & Floating Attributes
Hello all !
I have a model being validated that spits it''s error messages on the
resulting page using:
error_messages_for(:mymodel) .... Basic stuff. It''s working perfectly.
Now, I have something else I want to check on the same page (that isn''t an
attribute to the Model)... and am trying to add it using:
@mymodel.errors.add_to_base("another error here")
