HABTM -VS- belongs_to/has_many, for self-referential joins
Ok, David says on page 241 that sometimes a many-to-many relation with
attributes are better implemented as an actual model instead of using HABTM.
Well, I''ve got that situation and I can''t figure it out.
All of the examples in the book have HABTM examples between 2 different
tables, but I want to have a HABTM relation on 1 table with itself. (e.g.,
if I have a table Things,

Is there a way to abstract the updating of other parts of the page after an Ajax request without putting using the standard view file?
Hey all,
I''d like to abstract the process of updating different portions of the
page after an Ajax request has taken place. Rather than simply putting
the extra view logic in the standard rjs template, it seems to give
better separation if there is a split between the core view logic (ie,
inserting a row in a table), and updating any associated portions of
the page.
Is this possible? I

Re: Some advice on DB modeling
I have more or less the same problem. I''m trying to build a system where
users can enter their friends. But the solutions seems not to work for me.
I used same sql:
CREATE TABLE `friends` (
`user_id` int(11) NOT NULL default ''0'',
`friend_id` int(11) NOT NULL default ''0'',
KEY `user_id` (`user_id`),
KEY `friend_id` (`friend_id`),

Warning message when returning multiple items
In my function I am trying to return multiple computed items (separated by commas). The function does what I need, but I get a warning message that multi-argument returns are deprecated. Is this a warning I should heed, or is there a more elegant and warning free way of achieving the same end? Thanks

If form changed ask if you really want to exit page...
First things first: Hi all! I''ve been sucked into prototype and
script.aculo.us develpment thanks (because of?) the Symfony PHP
framework...
I''d like to implement a feature on some admin pages, but I can''t seem
to find the right search term to google it; I want to ask the user to
confirm exit of a page, if she has changed anything on the forms
displayed on it.

Reading in FORTRAN data using R
Hi There:
I was wondering if there is a way to read FORTRAN list data (similar to
IDL's readf function). I often use FORTRAN for most of my number
crunching, and use something like IDL to visualize and perform
statistical analysis on that data. Since the each file is rather large
(>100 Mb), formatting the output into columns or tables is impractical,
hence the "list"

Parent listing children.
My database is set up as Categories > Things associated by category_id
and has_many and belongs_to.
How would I go about listing all the categories and under each Category
is it''s children? Is there an easy rails way to do this - preferably
without using acts as tree? Any help is appreciated - thanks!

emailing plain text to exchange/outlook
I know this isn't CentOS-specific, but it is probably a common problem
- does anyone have a solution?
If you mail something that is plain text from linux a recipient using
outlook, it will remove line breaks more or less randomly. There is
a way to tell outook to put them back as you read each message, but
most people just think I sent it wrong.
Is there something you can do to make a

Can't restore from GPFS snapshots, disk_free error
Hello,
We're trying to set up a GPFS system with Samba running on top with CTDB

The snapshots are in the following format:

Fonts on Windows devices
Moi!
I've spent a fun few hours trying to get a plot to look exactly the way
I want it, and with a lot of help from Venables & Ripley (the book!) and
the help pages, I've almost got it perfect. Only one problem now
remains....
I'm using R1.2.2 on Windoze NT. I want to draw the graph as a Windows
metafile (so at the moment I'm using the windows device, i.e. on the
screen and

Missing values in time series
Apologies for this - I'm sure I'm missing something somewhere...
I've got a time series with several of missing values in it that I want
to torture with R. But ts doesn't like the NA's, and I can't find any
documentation telling me what to do about it.
Help!

ordering x's and y's
Hello ALL:
How do I get R to list all possible orderings of 2 x's and 3 y's? It should
look like this (which rows appear first is unimportant):
x x y y y
x y x y y
x y y x y
x y y y x
y x x y y
y x y x y
y x y y x
y y x x y
y y x y x
y y y x x
Thanks,

Error Bars
I'm trying to draw some error bars on a bar chart. I'm using code like
this:
thing <- c(3,3,3)
se <- c(1,1,1)
names(thing) <- c("A", "B", "C")
barplot(thing, ylim=c(0,4))
arrows(c(1:3), thing-se, c(1:3), thing+se, code=3, angle=90,length=0.1)
Using c(1:3) has 2 problems:
1. Obviously it is untidy, but using names(thing) doesn't work, and I

Multiple random effects inlme?
Moi!
I was helping to teach a course on mixed models this week, and we came
across a problem with coding more than one random effect in lme when
they aren't nested.
As an example, suppose we have an experiment where we sample moths from
several populations, and place the moths on different trees, and measure
a trait (in this case survival of offspring, but that's less
important). We

Isotopic notation in plots
I really like to use R for all my graphs, and as I work with stable
isotopes I want to have a proper chemical notation in my plots
I have looked at ?plotmath, but didn't find the answer and also searched
the R website.

how to make plotmath expression work together with paste
Recent questions about using plotmath have renewed my interest in this question
I want to have expressions take values of variables from the
environment. I am able to use expressions, and I am able to use paste
to put text and values of variables into
plots. But the two things just won't work together.
Here is some example code that shows what I mean.

Serializing objects to the database
I have a rails app that has a search mechanism with a bunch of
options. I''ve consolidated all the search parameters into a
SearchQuery class. Now I want to store searches to be recalled later.
I searched the wiki but couldn''t find any pages about how to do this
best. I''m worried that if I just serialize the object I won''t be able
to change the class without

Convert string for expression in plot
Hi,
Although I understand how to use expression and paste to add
superscripts and symbols to my graphs, I have a problem with adding
superscripts to an existing string.
For example, I read in the following from a separate file:
25Mg(p,g)
I want to convert that to superscripts etc. (in LaTex format):
$^{25}$Mg(p,$\gamma$)
This needs to then be put into a graph title.
Any ideas? I know that I

multiple colors within same line of text
Hi, I'm interested in using mtext(), but with the option of having multiple
colors in the same line of text.
For example, creating a line of text where:
Red is red and blue is blue
How do you create a text argument that lets you do this within mtext()?
Thanks,
