Errors
I'm a brand new wine user, trying to install a genealogy program that the database says works without problems. I get a load of error messages when I run the install, and the install never completely runs. I want help, but I don't know where to start. What information should I be providing to the good folks of this list in hopes of getting a solution? Thanks Rick Seiden

TMG -- MS Visual Foxpro errors
I'd like very much to be able to run "The Master Genealogist" under Wine. TMG is a MS Visual Foxpro application for genealogy database work. On my Kubuntu 6.10 system I have successfully downloaded and installed Wine 0.9.30, and then installed TMG ver. 6 including updates to 6.12, the current version. During TMG installation, there was a problem with a lack of

Wine and Legacy 6.0 Genealogy Program
Has anyone had any positive experience in installing the Legacy 6.0 genealogy program? The only instances I have found appear to be quite negative - to which I can attest; however, I would like to run Legacy 6.0 thru Wine in my Ubuntu OS if at all possible as opposed to using GRAMPS (a great program, but uploading a GEDCOM from Legacy 6.0 from Windoze Legacy has not been without major issues).

Any tools for working with US 2000 census data?
I've been given the job of extracting some data from the United States 2000 census (files at http://www2.census.gov/census_2000/datasets/Summary_File_2/Maryland/all_ Maryland.zip 52M). I'm only interested in Census Block Groups (CBGs) located within Baltimore City, Maryland. Additionally, I just have to extract certain data fields. I think I'll be using Summary File 2. This is my first

Generalized nonlinear mixed model function?
I am wondering if there is an R function that could estimate a generalized nonlinear mixed model. >From my reading it seems that nlme from the nlme package can fit nonlinear mixed models, while lmer from the lme4 package can fit generalized linear mixed models. One alternative I?ve found is gnlmix from the repeated package, although this only allows for a single random effect. Is there

sampling question
I am interested in locating a script to implement a sampling scheme that would basically make it more likely that a particular observation is chosen based on a weight associated with the observation. I am trying to select a sample of ~30 census blocks from each ZIP code area based on the proportion of women in a ZCTA living in a particular block. I want to make it more likely that a block will

Census ARIMA x-12 seasonal adjustment in R?
Hello, I am new to usin R - which is a great tool - and would like to know if R has a seasonal adjustment program for time series and/if it incorporates the Census Bureau's ARIMA x-12 seasonal adjustment program in any way? Thanks so much! Tony [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

USA map
R users, In S, there was a function called usa() that would draw the map of the United States, plus it had other options for graphics. I have looked but I can't find the equivalent in R. Is there one? Thanks, Jason

Sum by group
I have population data (?totpopE?) at the census tract level (?GEOID?), which are nested within Precincts (?Precinct?). Please see below my data structure. I used the code to sum population data per precinct: inters <- inters %>% group_by(Precinct) %>% mutate(TotalPop = sum(totpopE) ) However, said code produced too large sums because each census tract (?GEOID?) has multiple

"Error in plot.window(...) : invalid 'xlim' value" from plot(...par(new = TRUE))
[New to the community; still in early part of R's learning curve.] Several months ago, I was requested to generate some graphs on a periodic basis. Accordingly, I managed to figure out a way to do so, using a combination of Perl and R (in a FreeBSD environment). While I've needed to adjust a few things here and there, the general approach has been pretty solid , and the R part has had

projection.matrix() {popbio} for more than one matrix
Hello, I am trying to use the projection.matrix( ) function and am following the example given. I have my data formatted very similar to the test.census example. > str(AsMi05mat) `data.frame': 1854 obs. of 6 variables: $ Tag : num 501 502 503 504 505 506 507 508 509 510 ... $ Year : int 1995 1995 1995 1995 1995 1995 1995 1995 1995 1995 ... $ Length : num 34

Apache Authorization Access Control - location of, htpasswd in Centos 5.1
I don't think it's the path of htpasswd that's the problem but here it is anyway: /usr/bin/htpasswd. The problem is more likely that the directory you're trying to create the password file in with the command "htpasswd -c /passwd/passwords famsite" doesn't exist. Completely off topic, but amusing?
Folks: Thought that many on this list might find this amusing, perhaps even a bit relevant. Hope it's OK: ************ WASHINGTON - The government's estimate of the number of Americans without health insurance fell by nearly 2 million Friday, but not because anyone got health coverage. The Census Bureau <http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=Census+Bureau> said it has

survival object
Hi All, I am trying to do a survivorship analysis with library(survival)from a data set that looks like this: I followed a bunch of naturally germinated seedlings of an annual plant from germination to death (none made it to reproduce, and died in a period of ~60 days after germination.) I also know the size of the seed of every individual censused. So I am trying to analyze seedling survival as

Vectorizing sample()
I am simulating sickness among a group of families. Part of the task is to randomly draw who in the family will be sick, randomly drawing from family ID's where Dad =1, Mom = 2, Kid1 = 3, Kid2 = 4., etc. My census of Dads is of the form shown below. Dad_ID Spouse (Y=1;N=0) #Kids #People_Becoming_Sick 1 1 0 1 2

Enormous Datasets
Dear List, I have some projects where I use enormous datasets. For instance, the 5% PUMS microdata from the Census Bureau. After deleting cases I may have a dataset with 7 million+ rows and 50+ columns. Will R handle a datafile of this size? If so, how?
