Addendum to wishlist bug report #10931 (factanal) (PR#12754)

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
Hi,
on March 10 I filed a wishlist bug report asking for the inclusion of
some changes to factanal() and the associated print method. The changes
were originally proposed by John Fox in 2005; they make print.factanal()
display factor correlations if factanal() is called with rotation =

How-To construct a cov list to use a covariance matrix in factanal?
Hi,
I have a set of covariance matrices but not the original data. I want to carry out some exploratory factor analysis. So, I am trying to construct a covariance matrix list as the input for factanal. I can construct a list which includes the cov, the centers, and the n.obs. But it doesn't work. I get an error that says "Error in sqrt(diag(cv)) : Non-numeric argument to mathematical

make check for R-1.6.2 on IBM AIX
Dear all,
The 'make check' step fails for the pacakge mva on IBM AIX.
The tail of the Rout log file looks like:
> for(factors in 2:4) print(update(Harman23.FA, factors = factors))
Call:
factanal(factors = factors, covmat = Harman23.cor)

factor analysis (pca): how to get the 'communalities'?
Dear expe-R-ts,
I try some test data for a factorAnalysis (resp. pca) in the sense of Prof.
Ripley's MASS ? 11.1, p. 330 ff., just to prepare myself for an analysis of my
own empirical data using R (instead of SPSS).

factanal AIC?
Dear list members,
Could any expert on factor analysis be so kind to explain how to calculate AIC on the output of factanal. Do I calculate AIC wrong or is factanal$criteria["objective"] not a negative log-likelihood?
Best regards
Jens Oehlschl?gel
The AIC calculated using summary.factanal below don't appear correct to me:

I am having difficulty obtaining the scores from my principal component
analysis. I have used this method before and have had no problems. The
data set that I am using this time is similar to what I have used in the
past. What do I need to do to my dataset in order for me to obtain these
scores?
R screen says the following message

Factor Analysis-factanal function
Dear friends,
I'm using R to produce the following Factor Analysis:
> matriz.cor<-hetcor(matrix(as.factor(data), ncol=variables,
byrow=T))$correlations
> factanal(x=data, factors=2, covmat=matriz.cor, scores='regression')
Then the screen output shows the following message:
Error en factanal(x = data, factors = 2, covmat = matrix, :

Factanal fits
Greetings, all:
I am using factanal in R.
When I enter a matrix or a formula, the print method winds up with something like this:
Test of the hypothesis that 6 factors are sufficient.
The chi square statistic is 28.1 on 22 degrees of freedom.
The p-value is 0.172
But when I enter a covmat, the print method winds up with something like this:
The degrees of freedom for the model is 22 and the

Factor correlations in factanal
Dear R-devel list members,
Ben Fairbank draw it to my attention that factanal() (in the stats package)
doesn't report factor correlations for oblique rotations. Looking at the
source, I see that factanal also doesn't save the factor-transformation
(rotation) matrix from which these correlations can be computed. I've
modified the source, attached below, so that the transformation

Has someone implemented in R (or any other language)

Factor Analysis/Inputting Correlation Matrix
Can someone please direct me to how to run a factor analysis in R by first inputting a correlation matrix? Does the function "factanal" allow one to read a correlation matrix instead of data vectors?
Thanks,
Matt.

"Unable to optimize" error returned in factanal using R-3.0.1, Windows 64 bit, and OpenBLAS
Hello,
I have been trying for weeks to compile a 64-bit Rblas. I started with ATLAS where I have had success in the past, but 64 bit was not behaving, and as each compilation takes between 9 and 12 hours, "test, check, and revise" was not going to be really viable. I therefore switched to OpenBLas (OPBL). I was successful in compiling R-3.0.1 and an OPBL-based BLAS for Windows 64bit

loadings function (PR#13886)

Version: 2.9
OS: Mac OSX
Submission from: (NULL) (69.169.178.34)
The help documentation for loadings() lists more then one parameter. The
function call only expects one parameter. The digits, cutoff, and sort
parameters are not used in the function.

covmat argument in princomp() (PR#3682)
R version: 1.7.1
OS: Red Hat Linux 7.2
When "covmat" is supplied in princomp(), the output value "center" is all
NA's, even though the input matrix was indeed centered. I haven't read
anything about this in the help file for princomp(). See code below for an
example: pc2$center is all NA's.

Passing Command to Optim in factanal
Hi,
I am currently trying to execute the following command:
f<-factanal(factors=k$Components$nparallel,covmat=m,n.obs=2287,rotation="varimax",control=list(opt=list(method=c("BFGS"))))
but keep getting the error: L-BFGS-B needs finite values of 'fn'
I can't figure out what I am doing wrong here, why isn't optim being told to use BFGS instead of L-BFGS-B...

pca vs. pfa: dimension reduction
Can't make sense of calculated results and hope I'll find help here.
I've collected answers from about 600 persons concerning three
variables. I hypothesise those three variables to be components (or
indicators) of one latent factor. In order to reduce data (vars), I
had the following idea: Calculate the factor underlying these three
vars. Use the loadings and the original var

Sweave \Sexpr{} advice please
Dear List,
First off, my deepest gratitude to the Sweave developers: this tool has
improved my quality greatly.
A question in my work I use \Sexpr{} statements scalar values and the xtable
package for all manner of tables. What I'd like to do is to use a vector
inline, rather than a whole separate table. Something like:

varimax rotation in R
Hi everyone-
I have used several methods to calculate principal components rotated using the varimax procedure. This is simple enough. But I would like to calculate the % of variance explained associated with each PC before and after rotation.
factanal returns the % of variance explained associated with each PC but I cannot seem to get it to change after rotation.
Many thanks for your
